Would you agree with an alternative type of incarceration for the really hard cases? For example, solitary confinement 24/7 … no communication and no outside exercise periods… no removal from their cell for any reason … the cell would be generously sized … maybe even large … 10 ft x 30 ft, for example. Well lighted. But they would never leave. Not for any reason. Meals would be slid through a pass-through designed so they could not attack the guards.

Would something like that be acceptable to you … as an alternative to execution?
ACLU would file suit before it was ever initiated.

Sure. I suppose there would have to be some provision for medical care or visits by priest/rabbi/imam/whoever and legal counsel.

I don’t know if there are any other SF fans here but Spider Robinson did a story where prisoners are locked into “luxury” cells (barcalounger, large-screen TV, stereo system, &c) but they don’t get out at all until their sentence is up.
By the end of the story the prisoner commits suicide (not an outcome we’d be hoping for) because with no human contact he had to look inside himself and couldn’t stand it.

The real issue is: how to protect the guards from attacks by prisoners who take advantage of their time out of the cell to attack, or who fashion weapons out of innocent items and attack guards through small openings such as the port used to pass food in. Or who throw feces at the guards. Or who attack other prisoners or who use communications privileges to arrange “hits” (murders) of witnesses, etc.

There are really only two possibilities: total solitary confinement (in comfortable quarters) or eventual execution.

We’re not talking about prisoners with overdue library books here. These are murderers. Difficult for people outside the violent crime culture to comprehend.
