Nonsense! He respected the Constitution to the greatest extent possible under the circumstances of insurrection and civil war. One must remember that it was the forces of the South which did not respect the Constitution by making war against the Republic. Lincoln was fastidious in allowing the Constitution to guide his movements in the lead up to the war and refused to take any actions against the South until they had made clear their intention to separate from the Union and had actually taken military action against Union forces. If Lincoln did not respect the Constitution, why did he allow Presidential elections to take place in 64, especially when, as an unpopular President, he faced a very popular George McClellan? Lincoln’s entire presidency was about protecting the Constitution and ensuring those rights listed within would continue to guide the Union and serve as an example to the rest of the world. In order to do so he had to take extreme measures under difficult circumstances, measures, I might add, which the Constitution allows a sitting President to take under the same circumstances faced by Lincoln. If aspects of the Constitution were violated by the Lincoln Administration, it was for the purpose of protecting that same Constitution and the Union for future Americans.

I don’t know about that. Read the original Lincoln v Douglas debates and then listen to what the debates are like today. The nation is very much united.

Not really. His overwhelming purpose was to save the Union, even if it meant ignoring parts of the constitution. And that he did, even when abolitionists wanted to give up. Had he been a strict consitutionalist, like Ron Paul, then the Union would not have been saved. Jefferson Davis was much more of a strict interpreter of the constitution of the United States and was more like Ron Paul as far as that is concerned.

That is my understanding as well. But then again, Lincoln wasn’t on the side of States’ Rights.

Have you seen the Occupy Wall Street protests? The 26 states suing the federal government because of Obamacare. The country is on a precipice. If Obama is reelected it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if half a dozen or more states break away or begin the nullification process of most of the federal laws. Our “solid union” is an illusion.

Go ahead with that, I was talking about Lincoln and the War Between the States. People around here, particularly myself have really short triggers on the subject. I’ve gotten myself put on vacation on no less than three occations over it.
