I’m not sure about that. I do agree with you that Gingrich is conservative compared to the more moderate Romney. But Gingrich is also a thinking man’s conservative, an intellectual, who is at the same time attractive to the working man. (These are all generalized stereotypes, I realize, but somehow they seem to fit.) Thus he has broader appeal than Romney, who appears more detached, an elite intellectual, a multi-millionaire (or billionaire?), and lacks charisma though he looks presidential. Bill Clinton had some good words about Gingrich in an interview tonight on the PBS News Hour: the latter’s intellect, his adeptness in foreign policy, and his ability to work with Congress across party lines as well as with former President Clinton and with Hillary Clinton when she was senator of New York. Although opposite in their political views, there is a curious parallel between Clinton and Gingrich in their experience and political savvy, ability to think outside the box, non-ideologue practicality, and even moral character or lack thereof.
