Newest friends…Newt and Donald.
What was Newt the only one who would play in his sand-box?
Happened in 2000, Washington DC during the Bush/Gore elections. The only one I can think of was in 1972 when an elector pledged for Nixon and Agnew. When he placed his vote it was for Libertarian candidates John Hospers and Theodora “Tonie” Nathan. It was the first electoral vote to ever be cast for a female candidate.
When looking up the year I found this list on wikipedia:

I wonder if not getting support from his congressional colleagues is a good thing? Perhaps they fear their games may end with him in office… who knows what their real motives are.Gingrich’s former Congresssional colleagues aren’t rushing to endorse him

Gingrich outlines differences between him and Romney - NRO
I was thinking the same thing. I’m torn by the results. On the one hand, our Congressmen aren’t exactly dong a great job. On the other hand, a leader needs their support.I wonder if not getting support from his congressional colleagues is a good thing? May be. Interesting point. Congress on both sides is unpopular at the moment. Gingrich getting much fewer than Romney’s endorsements from Congressmen and women could benefit Gingrich.I wonder if not getting support from his congressional colleagues is a good thing? Kind of a cynical attitude isn’t it? I agree there are some real stinkers in Congress but the idea they’d all conspire to keep the old boys club intact is a little unlikely. They may be endorsing Romney because they see the kind of man who will make a good president. Or if you want to be slightly more cynical, they see him as the eventual winner and thus wish to be on the championship team.I wonder if not getting support from his congressional colleagues is a good thing? My reference was entirely directed at the failings of congress. I never said anything regarding Romney. I personally don’t think he is the best candidate for the job, but I never questioned his flip-flopping.Kind of a cynical attitude isn’t it? I liked Romney last time, and he’s still my number one pick. And all those who rail against his “flip flops” be aware MANY have had a change of heart regarding life issues including the ever sainted Ronald Reagan. As long as he’s ‘flip flopping’ in the right direction and has maintained the policy since that change of heart, I have no problem with his former attitude.
Have you Romney bashers ever heard the saying “Perfection is the enemy of the good?” Waiting until you have a “perfect” candidate and standing on your high horse about being pure and not voting for someone who has a wart or two is going to help the Obama-nation be re-elected. Four more years of that destroyer of life and this nation, and we can forget about reversing the pro-death agenda being promoted by the current administration.
BTW did anyone see the nice Parade article about Romeny? I was shocked that a mainstream type publication would not be a hatchet job on a Republican. I hope it gets more people to give Romney another look. Overall I think he’s got the most positives and fewest negatives of any of them.

Maybe Congress is looking for the candidate they will most be able to push around.Kind of a cynical attitude isn’t it? Heavens I wasn’t the slightest bit upset. Sorry you took it that way. It just seemed kind of cynical to believe that such a huge majority would support Romney because they think they can push him around. My reference was entirely directed at the failings of congress. I never said anything regarding Romney. I personally don’t think he is the best candidate for the job, but I never questioned his flip-flopping.
I don’t know why you were so upset by me being dissatisfied with congress; I think most of Americans would say the same. It seemed as though the statistic was presented negatively towards Gingrich, and I simply don’t know if it is entirely a bad thing that congress doesn’t support him as much as Gingrich.
I do think that Romney would be easier to persuade to sign a bill that he shouldn’t than Gingrich.
Understatement of the century.I was thinking the same thing. I’m torn by the results. On the one hand, our Congressmen aren’t exactly dong a great job. On the other hand, a leader needs their support.
The reason Newt is seen as undisciplined is that he often says things that are probably not what the GOP would like to have out there. His latest idea, fire the janitors at schools (including elementary schools) and have the children be responsible for keeping their schools clean. We are hearing the word “discipline” used a lot by pundits right now. Usually in a phrase like “Newt lacks discipline.” Whenever you hear a word repeated over and over again by pundits, a red flag should immidiately pop up in your mind. Why are they using that word? In this case it is easy to figure out. If you think of someone who reeks of discipline who is running for President, who normally comes to mind? Romney, that’s who. This is not an accident. This is strategy. This is getting the message out. At least whomever got the talking points out there initially weren’t doing it by accident. They probably did it because they wanted to contrast The “disciplined” Romney with the “undisciplined” Newt.
As long as Newt is ahead in the polls you will see more of this. Not from Romney (who needs to keep his disciplined presidential look about him.) But by pundits
I think Newt’s referring to children who are old enough to handle certain tasks and could use a little extra income at home. I think the janitor example wasn’t the best one, but it is and as far as the janitor, he could go to work for a company or start his own offering to clean during closing hours and do things the children don’t have time to do.The reason Newt is seen as undisciplined is that he often says things that are probably not what the GOP would like to have out there. His latest idea, fire the janitors at schools (including elementary schools) and have the children be responsible for keeping their schools clean.
I have a couple of problems with this idea. What happens to the families of those janitors? Should 5th graders be responsible for mopping floors and cleaning bathrooms? When will these children be studying if they are working as part-time janitors? What about the chemicals that are used in cleaning? Do we want children using them? And don’t we want children protected?
If Newt meant this, I don’t want him as president where he is liable to roll back protections we have, as a country, put in place to protect children.
If Newt didn’t mean this, this is an example of what is meant by lack of discipline. He is in love with ‘big ideas’, but talks about them before they are thought out.
Let’s say you want your computer fixed or your software explained. You can shell out big bucks to the Geek Squad, or you can ask — but you can’t hire — a typical teenager, or even a preteen. Their experience with computers and the online world is vastly superior to that of most people over the age of 30. From the point of view of online technology, it is the young who rule. And yet they are professionally powerless: they are forbidden by law from earning wages from their expertise.
From the outset, federal law made exceptions for kid movie stars and performers. Why? It probably has something to do with how Shirley Temple led box-office receipts from 1934–1938. She was one of the highest earning stars of the period.
Here is another strange exemption: “youth working at home in the making of wreaths composed of natural holly, pine, cedar, or other evergreens (including the harvesting of the evergreens).” Perhaps the wreath lobby was more powerful during the Great Depression than in our own time?
To top it all off:Oh, and there is one final exemption, as incredible as this may be: federal law allows states to allow kids to work for a state or local government at any age, and there are no hourly restrictions. Virginia, for example, allows this.

To give you a flavor of the opposition, consider this funny “Beatitude” read by Congressman Fritz G. Lanham of Texas on the US House floor in 1924, as a point of opposition to a child-labor ban then being considered:
Code:Consider the Federal agent in the field; he toils not, nor does he spin; and yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his populous household was not arrayed with powers like one of these.
Code:Children, obey your agents from Washington, for this is right.
Code:Honor thy father and thy mother, for the Government has created them but a little lower than the Federal agent. Love, honor, and disobey them.
Code:Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, tell it to thy father and mother and let them do it.
Code:Six days shalt thou do all thy rest, and on the seventh day thy parents shall rest with thee.
Code:Go to the bureau officer, thou sluggard; consider his ways and be idle.
Code:Toil, thou farmer's wife; thou shalt have no servant in thy house, nor let thy children help thee.
Code:And all thy children shall be taught of the Federal agent, and great shall be the peace of thy children.
Code:Thy children shall rise up and call the Federal agent blessed.**
I just wanted to say that I’m really starting to love this site. It’s wonderful for economics and small government articles and sources. They even have a bunch of PDFs of books for free!
Since my kids are homeschooled, I fired the janitor (me) and now my kids do most of the cleaning up.I think Newt is thinking out of the box and trying to address a need of teaching some in our society not to just grow up to steal and be on welfare. It is a good lesson. One many of us grew up with. I had a paper route when I was a young teenager. I also helped clean parts of my school.
I don’t think his point was to fire all janitors. Rather, it was to give some of the easier tasks to children to (1) reduce number of overqualified laborers on staff (2) give children a sense that effort=pay. His latest idea, fire the janitors at schools (including elementary schools) and have the children be responsible for keeping their schools clean
I agree Newt was thinking outside the box. And that is why some people call him undisciplined. It is because he does it in public before he or others in the party have had a chance to determine the potential political backlash.I think Newt is thinking out of the box and trying to address a need of teaching some in our society not to just grow up to steal and be on welfare.
