I guess some people have things in common with Planned Parenthood, they spent millions against Romney. They didn’t like him as a candidate either.

i am glad that the Bishop was not afraid to speak his mind.

i suppose the Catholics who voted for Obama will simply laugh at what the Bishop said. they seem to be deaf to what Obama stands for.

My vote is a throwaway anyway because Washington D.C. went 90% Democrat anyway. May as well register a protest vote for somebody that I like rather than a lesser of evils.
That is one of the reasons why I think the electoral college needs to be changed, because of people like yourself who feel their vote has little impact and depresses turn out

What if there are many people who do not vote because they do not think their vote makes a difference? If you add them they could make a difference in close elections, and states that are not swing states have close elections

Preposterous, I didn’t vote for Obama, but I also thought Romney was a terrible candidate and ultimately voted for neither of them. To suggest that I’m therefore partially responsible for Obama is like saying that the Poles were responsible for being overrun by the Nazis because they rejected the second-worst candidate for empire in the Soviets. 🤷
Elections have consequences, ever heard of voting for the lesser of the two evils?BTW I don’t consider Romney evil, yet those like you who sat out the election, obviously didn’t see the glaring difference between him and Obama:rolleyes:

Actually, I never said that, and my donations to the National Right to Life Committee, Gabriel Project and others strongly begs to differ. 🤷

Your strong partisan opinions are leading you to judge others. Please try to reconsider.

Forgive me for believing that politicians lie sometimes. The past 30 years Republicans have promised to end abortion but they keep appointing more pro-choice justices to the Supreme Court. So I’m a little embittered by it. Romney has been pro-choice the majority of his political career, so the best you could say about him is that he’s a little less pro-abortion than Obama is (which I’ll grant to be true).

But explain to me why I’m part of the problem if I didn’t vote for Romney. Maybe I voted for some other pro-life candidate (I did), and perhaps I voted for a pro-life governor that was allied with the anti-Planned Parenthood movement (I did).
Again, this is what I find so stunning. Those who sat out the election because Romney wasn’t conservative enough!:confused:Through omission, you allowed Obama another term.I just don’t get that logic. At least the ones who worked put the ,mental gymnastics,to rationalize their vote for Obama,we’re upfront about their decision!

If I see an assailant trying to strangle a child, and if there is no help at hand, and if I doubt I can physically overcome the assailant, but try anyway and fail, I have done the moral thing. If I do not try, then I have done the immoral thing.

I did not allow Obama third term because I didn’t vote for him, I voted for an actual pro-life candidate. I’m really tired of having my character assaulted in this thread. Really no Christian attitude at all here.

Where did I say ANYTHING about voting against defunding Planned Parenthood? I have been rejoicing their national closures as much as any faithful Catholic.

Wow! Did I miss some good news? You have been rejoicing about national closures of Planned Parenthood? I haven’t seen that in writing yet. I know they had representatives making numerous visits to the White House prior to the election - who knows about post-election. - All that transparency ya know! I am pretty sure that many people who voted for the current President Obama are about to find out just who they kept in office! Misery loves company and company is coming

I am not attacking you, just trying to figure out, especially in an election as this one, with so much at stake, the logic behind voting for someone with no chance of winning,or just sitting out the election. They both produced the same result.🤷

Are you following LifeSiteNews? They’re reporting tons of clinics being defunded.

Romney had no chance of winning D.C. anyway so I don’t understand what the big deal is 🤷

I mean, my logic is that Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush – supposedly pro-life presidents – appointed justices to the Supreme Court that ended up doing grave damage to the cause of banning abortion. If pro-lifers don’t wise up and stop voting for presidential candidates that are just “less” pro-abortion than the Democrats then we may never see abortion banned through the Supreme Court.

So what’s the point in a protest vote if it doesn’t actually protest the pro-abortion policies of both the Republicans and Democrats? According to some of the posters in this thread, this logic means I’m allied with Planned Parenthood, and I’m very offended by this assertion.

No one has, or can, judge you subjectively, so perhaps one ought to calm down. The issue is whether throwing one’s vote away when one could have used it to oppose abortion is objectively wrong.

And when one party’s platform endorses abortion on demand and homosexual “marriage” while the other’s directly opposes both, one ought to ask oneself whether one has an objective basis for saying there is no difference between them on those issues, or whether one simply assumes it based on one’s frustration with the difficulty of getting anything done about them.

Considering I’ve been accused of taking “no action to defund planned parenthood nationally” when that is factually wrong, I think I’m within reason to be offended at the accusations flying my way.

You speak as if their platform is an objective indicator of the force of the actions they’re going to take in office. This has historically not been the case, as I’ve brought up with Reagan and GWB.

Yes, the Democrats are clearly more pro-abortion and pro-same-sex ‘marriage’ than the Republicans are, but since nobody here is disputing that my vote for the presidential office is almost completely worthless, I figured I would vote for somebody more solemnly pro-life with my protest vote than for Romney. Romney only became pro-life when he needed our votes to become president.

Lots of judgments and assumptions in the above. But it still seems to me it’s all what they call “post hoc, ergo propter hoc” reasoning…reasoning from the result to the cause instead of the other way around. Many, many times on here people have posted the really large array of prolife things Bush II did, and just as many times they have posted the very large array of pro-abortion things Obama has done. Putting them in the balance, one can hardly say there’s anything remotely resembling an equivalence. Consequently, it seems inescapable to me that thinking there is an equivalence is simply frustration with the Repubs’ being unable to do more than they have managed.

Personally, I wasn’t too crazy about Romney. I did not particularly doubt the bona fides of his (albeit limited) prolife position, or at least I knew that if he took a pro-abortion stance in office his entire base would desert him. He wasn’t my first choice or my second.

But I knew I could vote against Obama and the evils both he and his party espouse. I’m not a Repub and never was. I was a Dem officeholder until it became plain to me that abortion was the only real value the party had anymore. I never became a Repub, but I support them because their opponents are always pro-abortion and the Repub candidates generally are not.

I suppose I could say my vote is wasted because I live in a district so Republican that oftentimes there isn’t even a Dem candidate for most offices. So, in a sense, my vote is wasted too because it’s unneeded. I’m half Irish by descent, and perhaps I learned too much from my Irish forbears. When it came to struggles, they had two rules: 1. Oppose evil by your acts whether it makes any difference or not. 2. Make it clear to your opponent that he has to kill or totally disable you to make you stop fighting, and mean it.

Considering Obama and Romney were the only two in the running to actually win the election, then I as a Catholic, in accordance with Church teaching had the duty to vote for the candidate who was pro life. My feelings of whether or not I liked Romney were not important, he was pro life as opposed to Obama who is extremely pro abortion.
To vote for someone who had no chance of winning in my opinion was a vote for Obama and his anti life agenda. If two candidates are running then my vote has to be for the one who is pro life regardless of how I feel. What counts is that I am a practicing Catholic and must therefore vote as such. If not voting for the pro life candidate and voting for one who has no chance of winning then I would be just as culpable as the ones who vote for pro Abortion.

I was a Dem party loyalist (like almost all of my relatives). Being half-Irish myself, perhaps I was influenced by the tradition. Now that it has become plain to me that
-]abortion/-] sexual licence in every imaginable form -]was/-] is the only real value the party -]had/-] has anymore
I have become thoroughly disillusioned.

I think that’s an excellent philosophy, very applicable to Christian integrity, and timeless.

The Bishop deserves some praise.

Meanwhile, please stop with the Nazi/Muslim/My Political Football Team is Better than your Political Football Team, etc. (Yes, I know Muslim was not mentioned but it’s a popular card to play.)

Best,
Ed

I do not see anyone saying my football team is better than your football team. This is a Catholic message board , so discussing what a Catholic should do in an election when one candidate is pro life and one is not is what we as Catholics should be discussing.

Bishop of Brooklyn NY… “…those who voted for President Obama bear the responsibility for a step deeper in the culture of death.”

thetablet.org/?p=21261

Well said Bishop!
I hope everyone reads the entire text. It is beautifully written and brings out the incredible irony that the very one who SHOULD have stood for life, whose own beginnings were rather shaky…a young graduate student, a foreign student who was already apparently married in his homeland…who was born right at the time when civil rights were finally becoming a mainstream issue…of ALL people why does the first black president, child of a single mom with a chaotic upbringing who has achieved so much BECAUSE of the freedom and opportunity offered in this country…why is Obama so obsessed with preventing or terminating babies? Why does this supposed Constitutional scholar run at full tilt against the wall of the Constitution? If he’s not stopping religious freedom, he’s pushing abortions, or trying to restrict gun ownership.

The Bishop lays out Obama’s clear path to a wierd utopian eugenics based society where the elite decide what’s best for us the great unwashed.

So to all of you who voted for this destructive force…I agree with the Bishop’s words. And I do not fault him for being “strident.” The future of this country is in the hands of…

**The President and his supporters sought to make this election, at least in part, about women’s rights. Much has been written about how the targeting of key constituencies was intended to stimulate specific votes.

In my view, those who voted for President Obama bear the responsibility for a step deeper in the culture of death. Under the cover of women’s issues, we now see an assault on religious freedom and personal conscience.

In our own state, Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed the largest expansion of abortion rights in New York State history. The irony is that our leadership is proposing this at a time when increasingly more Americans oppose abortion and support greater restrictions upon abortions. New York State, which already holds the record for the most abortions in our country, is now expanding this culture of death. We may lose, but we will stand up for what we believe.

Some may think my tone a bit strident and even un-nuanced. Maybe the time has come for more direct conversation on these matters, if we hope to preserve what is left of our God-given and Constitutionally-protected rights.**
