Besides being a curious story, we also have a moral dilemma here.
David Jimenez believed his devotion to a crucifix was responsible for his wife being cured of cancer. Well, the crucifix fell on him, crushing one of his legs.
And as CBS 2’s John Slattery reported Friday, the leg had to be amputated.

Yes, apparently Mr. Jimenez and his lawyer are suing. It makes one wonder what one might do in his shoes.
The church’s pastor told CBS 2’s Slattery by phone that parishioners collected food and some $7,000 for the Jimenez family, but Kitson said the insurance company for the archdiocese has been less than forthcoming. So, the injured man is suing.
Very impressive that the wife was cured. I’m sorry this crucifix was not better secured.

This story was up at Drudge Report.

Interestingly, I know of a Church where an outside statue did become very weathered and the Church restored it when it seemed people started leaving prayers there.

Isn’t there a mandatory State wide Workers Compensation Association across the United States that suppose to protect workers from accidents even in a Catholic Church?

Many countries have the same thing. And why presuppose its the injured man’s fault?
Kinda redundant. It was afterall an accident. And I don’t see the moral dilemma suing the Church if he’s unsuccessful making claim against Workers Compensation if they deny him. The Church insurance should cover if the accident happened on the Church property.

Serious bad accidents happen on Church property.

I don’t think Worker’s Comp insurance would cover this because the man was a volunteer and not an employee. However, the regular insurance should cover it.

I agree. That’s what insurance is for.

That would seem to be the case, at least in the state of New York.

Quoting from the website of the Workers Compensation Board
Who Is Not Covered By The Workers’ Compensation Law?
  1. Individuals who volunteer their services for nonprofit organizations and receive no compensation. Please note that compensation includes stipends, room and board, and other “perks” that have monetary value (WCL §3 Group 18). Money used solely to offset expenses incurred while performing activities for the nonprofit is not counted as a stipend (WCL §2 [9]);

According to the news article, Mr. Jimenez is suing because the insurance company is not being cooperative.

Kinda redundant…
What would lead you to think I presupposed it was the injured man’s fault?

Anyway, I’m not sure if all people would sue anyway, at least the Church who apparently took up a collection for him.

It would have to be a pretty massive collection to make up for a lost leg.

I tend to hear this type of news story more from those who have an ax to grind with Catholicism.

So you are saying the Drudge Report has an axe to grind with Catholicism? Obviously, then you are not informed in this area. That news source has a conservative view. Are you saying this story should not even be mentioned? And where have you ever heard a story like this mentioned?

I’m sure you will be joining CenturionGuard and not giving a response.

This is news and published by a major newspaper. Are you saying there should be a news blackout??

I often hear people find these kinds of stories offensive when their faith is not strong.

Actually, the article from the Drudge Report does not have anything against Catholicism. It’s just that, there are those who have used these types of news articles in an effort to attack Catholicism. I have nothing against the article itself.

Okay, then please show another article that is like this.

There isn’t. This is newsworthy, it was a freak event.

Maybe if we hear about a Church being bombed in Nigeria, we could say the same.

You have a point there and I concede to that.
