Did the pope say anything that he hasn’t said before? In reading the news links which are the basis for the CatholicCulture news summary, it seems Pope Benedict said ecumenism is important but that Church teaching shouldn’t be compromised to achieve that goal.

I’m pretty sure Pope John Paul II and Pope Paul VI said much the same.

Sure, the ones before have said it in such convoluted manner that I think the practice has been far from it in many cases.

But now after thinking a bit more, I think there has to be some emphasis on tradition as well. Otherwise it feels like we will be compromising our tradition to accommodate the traditions of others and as a result loose our own traditions.

Though tradition is not as infallible as Tradition, I think it is important in that it gives guidelines and practices to lead a good holy life. To loose it therefore is a shame.

No doubt I’m sure Pope Benedict XVI reiterated it for good reason.

I think there is a question as to whether in the past 50 years if such Catholic Traditions have been upheld verses ecumenical friendship itself strictly speaking.

Pope John Paul II made a monumental encyclical sometime before his death regarding the Catholic Church being the One and Only (“True Church”) of Christ as taught in the Catechism. I’m not so sure how well that that was received by all our ecumenical brothers and sisters.

It all boils down to interpretation of what this means.

Agreed.
Sometimes, some Catholics think that our little “t” traditions are really our big “T” Traditions. That can cause problems.

And vice versa as well.
