It’s true,the Early Church Fathers and the Doctors are not infallible, but they are useful as evidence that the Christian belief in the deity of Christ and of the Holy Spirit was very early, in fact present in the early second century, because Ignatius of Antioch in his letters written about the year 110 refer to Jesus as God. This belief is not a later development, as many anti-Trinitarian groups would like us to think.
And it is right, the bible alone is not a compelling weapon against them. This is because, in my opinion, the belief in Jesus’ deity and in the personality and deity of the Holy Spirit did not come about by pondering over scripture. That is, recognition of the nature of the Trinity did not come from scripture alone. It came from the direct oral teaching of the apostles–part of the traditions handed down to us. The original kerygma. The early Christians knew Jesus was God because the apostles had told them that directly, and only very indirectly was this truth later written in scripture. For this reason the reliance on scripture alone can result in a lot of confusion and misinterpretation.
However, since Catholics have access to the original teachings of the apostles themselves through Tradition, as well as to scripture, we know the proper interpretation of the bible in this matter.
