This percisely why Webster’s definition is wrong!
Webster is wrong because the church approved of arranged marriages of European royalty?

Karin:
Can you please provide me with the definition that states love is required for a marriage…and not a made up one either.
Now, Karin, I can see that you are confused. Slow down and think, This is Whinny the Pooh Theology. Webster’s definition has brought this on. First think of the beggining and count the heads.

:rotfl: Now Beaver…You really are a barrel of laughs tonight…thank you!
But now back to the question…please provide me with a dictionary (used by the masses) that states love is required for a “marriage”.
Perhaps the goverment should step out of the marriage arena…then marriage could be what you wanted it to be.!!!

MARRIAGE., defn; As a natural institution, the lasting union of a man and a woman who agree to give and receive rights over each other for the performance of the act of generation and for the fostering of their mutual love.

The state of marriage implies four chief conditions: 1. there must be a union of opposite sexes; it is therefore opposed to all forms of unnatural, homosexual behavior; 2. it is a permanent union until the death of either spouse; 3. it is an exclusive union, so that extramarital acts are a violation of justice; and 4. its permanence and exclusiveness are guaranteed by contract; mere living together, without mutually binding themselves to do so, is concubinage and not marriage.

Christ elevated marriage to a sacrament of the New Law. Christian spouses signify and partake of the mystery of that unity and fruitful love which exists between Christ and his Church, helping each other attain to holiness in their married life and in the rearing and education of their children.

And this would be a source used by the masses…😉
fruitfull love…that is having kids. As per your provided definition the

but that is not what is required or implied…state of marriage implies four chief conditions:* 1. there must be a union of opposite sexes; it is therefore opposed to all forms of unnatural, homosexual behavior; 2. it is a permanent union until the death of either spouse; 3. it is an exclusive union, so that extramarital acts are a violation of justice; and 4. its permanence and exclusiveness are guaranteed by contract; mere living together, without mutually binding themselves to do so, is concubinage and not marriage.*

What is the source of that definition? I agree it is a definition of a type of relationship that is called marriage. It is one of many relationships called marriage.

can you provide source material for this claim? or is this just anti-catholic bigotry.

It is consent that brings a marriage; and, if there is no valid consent, there is no marriage according to the law of the Catholic Church. Marriages contracted because of force or fear would be invalid according to Canon Law. If we strictly analyze, many marriages happening in India are invalid.

Perhaps I am having a Winnie the Pooh (as per Beaver) moment but are we dicsussing the “general” definition of marriage (applies to all) or the definition of marriage in regards to Catholics/Catholic Church?

It’s not bigotry at all. It’s the way royal marriage was done.

Arthur, first son of Henry VII married Catherine of Aragon in an arranged marriage. Instead of returning to Spain after Arthur’s death six months after the marriage, she hung around and married HenryVIII and subsequently lost her bid to remain queen.

Louis XIII married Anne of Austria when they were both 14. It was an arranged marriage blessed by the church.

Louis XVI married Marie Antoinette when he was 16 and she was 15 in a church wedding. She was from Austria and it was an arranged marriage. They both lost their heads.

Arranged marriage was the norm. There is nothing at all anti-Catholic in knowing the history of Europe.

The Church has rules and they describe one set of relationships that are called marriage. The state has rules and they describe a different relationship that is also called marriage. One might not like the fact that certain relationships are called marriage, but that’s what they are called.

Lust is satan’s counterfeit of God’s love. The God who took us out of the darkness into the great light. Now satan loves to hear the elite, Webster and maybe even you, say, we have to have inclusive language, but marriage is not defined by satan or Webster, it is, and will always be define by God and His love, and not satan’s counterfeit. The use of inclusive language in this instance places us back into the darkness, that Christ work so hard to bring us out of and into that great light. Use Whinnie the Pooh Theology and think., and do not let Webster and satan think for you.

I explained this above when I answered the question, It is one of many relationships called marriage, but here it is again. We would not want to confuse you…

We are all free to use the language as we please. Some can choose to use the word "marriage’ to describe only the type of relationship of which they approve. It’s a choice.

However, the rest of society uses the word “marriage” for many different types of relationships. The inclusive language is already here. It exists. It has won. Thtat’s why Wedster documents its existence.

Relationships based on lust are also called marriage. Look around. They are everywhere.

Perhaps if you do not like thier definition you should write them and complain and then perhaps provide them with the definition that you prefer or find more acceptable
Man I go out snowboarding for one night, and I come back and have to catch up on 50 posts. Thank you all for making them concise. Maybe we can get Chezzwazzered in the dictionary. We can point to this forum as literary usage to show its legitimacy! 👍 Especially since their definition includes every other form of marriage except what it really means. God invented marriage, Adam and Eve, and every other attempt falls short of the truth.

And the state legislature created civil marriage as an alternative.
