The inclusivve language simply reflects an acceptance that all different types of relationships are called marriage. Websters then looks at that social acceptance and documents it in its dictionary.

Exile? Captivity? I doubt it. All I did was look at how a word is being used in modern English.

Marriage is a name for many types of relationships. They are very general, and have only some common characteristics. I agree that it’s difficult to know the particulars of a relationship simply by knowing it is called marriage.

It’s best to qualify the word to accurately communicate. For example: civil marriage, Catholic marriage, short term marriage, Las vegas marriage, marriage with kids, marriage without kids…etc.

I think you are confuising yourself Beaver.
The world in general, today, does not view the definition of marriage by just the Catholic standard/definition.
Aquarius has stated and I agree…if you want to define marriage in a certain context perhaps you should as stated qualify the word marriage with another word…then you can perhaps get the definiton of the word you are looking for.

The dicitonary, Webster’s, gives you defintions on words in how they are used today by society. It is not Websters that is at fault it is society. Society has changed the context for the word marriage and society went and still goes along with this change…(please note that I do not agree).
So to change the definition of the word marriage to reflect a more Christian or Catholic view society needs to change how they define marriage!

The variety of relationships available today is a muddled situation. The word used to describe them describes a muddled situation. It’s an accurate descriprion of reality.

Clarity comes to words when the phenomena they describe has clarity. Until new words come into usage to describe various subsets of the many relationships called marriage, there will be little clarity.

All classes of people make use of the wide variety of relationships available today which are called marriage. The elite have certainly not limited such access to only the elite.

In our society, anyone of legal age and competence can marry almost anyone they want for whatever reason they want for whatever duration they want. It’s all called marriage.

Technically speaking, yes. Every spoken (and non spoken) word has an infinite number of meanings depending on the experience and how the word is defined to that person.
