Deism: Why is it wrong?

Anyway, drunkenness (i assume you mean heavy alcohol abuse) is extremely damaging to a person’s body and mind and can be detrimental to social status, also impairs judgment leading in unreasonable and illogical behavior. Drugs? Drugs are fun unless you get too heavy on them, then again you can destroy your body/mind/respect with them, best in moderation. Didn’t need a Bible to inform me on that one either.
.
It seems very clear to us that you do not need a Bible to inform you of many things or any things, for which we can only marvel at your individual powers of reason. You are new to this Catholic Forum and it has been my experience that when people come on here as deists or atheists or agnostics or even as anti-Catholic bigots, many do so not to learn of Catholicism, but to satisfy their own personal vanity. One feels good and smug after going against the grain and maybe scoring a point. None of them ever ask initially a question of what does Catholicism think of this or that in their initial post but go right off in their very first post to try to go for a knock at Catholicism.

Had you wanted to learn about your deism I assume you would have joined a club of deists so I assume you are A posting for you own self-interest, recognition, satisfaction and not interested in learning anything about ,in your words, “made up BS catholic religiosity”, and assume that we want to live a lie and influence the “SANE” population to which you belong (ah, that’s an icebreaker on a discussion group: you’re insane;), as, according to you “there never was a Jesus” (post 31); or B you do really wish to engage in friendly argumentation with Catholic believers over “made up BS catholic religiousity” but I find that hard to fathom now and assume A. When you quote from Karl Marx directly as religion being the opiate of the masses, why should you be surprised when people argue you share the same view of religion as Marx, instead of taking umbrage at it being pointed out this was a Marxist thesis originally.

But I’ll engage a bit and see if you are sincere or came on here with an axe. (One poster Ambrose here has been quite diplomatic to you and offered you a legitimate source arguing that your deism is baseless from a rational point of view and you have not even responded to his inquiry as to whether you are familiar with the work in question).

On drunkeness and how, of course, it’s obvious should one only be reasonable and logical that one would not overconsume. Well, let me argue that addictions and booze are not just simply states that any reasonable person such as yourself can understand to be bad in overuse. I will tell you that when I was training for the Bar, we all had to have lessons from lawyer/specialists/counsellors on the rampant addiction abuse among many, many PROMINENT members and judges on the highest courts of the land. Men who could only be described as among the most reasonable in society since using logic and reason was the great attribute that got these men to where they were. Our instructor hinted ominously that we would be absolutely amazed at the names of some of the eminently reasonable persons in desperate need of help. Guess what? For all their reason, they could not overcome their dependencies and addictions to booze, even they these paragons of reason. Judges on Courts of Appeal for goodness sake. There was no lack of them possessing reason. It is simply that reason and logic on their own are imperfect. Indeed, AA has simply found that the best way in the end to treat alcoholism is to finally admit your own helplessness as a human mortal and cast everything into God’s hands and pray for His guidance. This type of approach would seem to have more success than mere arguments to reason. (Well, Frank, it’s not good for your body and our status to drink. Meanwhile, Frank runs off for the next bottle before tomorrow’s trial.)

Indeed, Reason and Faith in Revealed Religion are not mutually exclusive as you seem to suggest but in many Christian apologists’ minds are complimentary. On a balance of probabilites, as the 2Oth Century’s most famous popular philosoher Mortimer Adler pointed, there are good logical reasons to believe in God, and for that matter a God engaged in His world (exnihilation) and Creation. (Adler went on to become a Catholic).

You see it’s fine and dandy these days to badmouth and throw all possible dirt on the Catholic Church as modern media usually looks for the most salacious episodes in Church history. But we are the Church of Mother Teresa and the Church of billions in history who each attempted by little deeds to assist and carry his brother or sister’s burden, to help them in sickness, to treat the poorest as if you were treating Christ Himself. Billions of little acts of decency never recorded but done out of Love for Christ and Humanity.

I suggest LawHead to learn a bit about people on this Catholic Forum who do not seem to share your own confidence and pride in Reason and traverse down to the bottom of the Prayer Intentions section of this Catholic Forum. Have a look at what real suffering people are up against in life and the solace and Help they do receive from our revealed God’s Love. Catholicism’s history is ultimately filled with billions of acts of love from one believer to others, entirely unrecorded, which acts far outnumber the salacious points in history one always seems drawn to about the Church.

God gave us Reason. God gave us the capacity for Faith in Him. When using both, we are flying with two wings rather than one. Faith in Catholic Teaching and Jesus Christ can be eminently reasonable.

My purpose in coming here was simply to give Deism a voice from a non-catholic perspective. I really didn’t come to stir up the bee hive. I suppose you could infer from my statement that SOME morality comes from revealed religion but if you look at it from my perspective we are still talking about man made moral philosophy only in this case with “the word of God” attached to it. I’m not your average iconoclastic youth here to start a ruckus, I AM a member of several Deist groups, I actually found this forum searching for “what is wrong with deism” to see a critical outside perspective but having arrived decided to jump in the mix.

I’d like to point out that Catholics (and other Christians) have just as many hard times in terms of addiction. My mother, Christian, addict. My uncle, Christian, crack head. I once had a private discussion with a Catholic priest in my area (his name will not be shared because this is in confidence) who confided in me that he, as a priest, struggles currently with alcoholism. These are just people I know DIRECTLY, let alone the many many others out there.

I have no intention of down talking any of the great men and women throughout history who were associated with the Catholic church. Mother Theresa was an inspiration to us all. If Christ makes you happy, more power to ya. I simply want respect for my point of view.

The initial reason I came here was not a moral debate. I simply wanted to express that Deists believe in God, not because the Bible says it is so but because our natural ability to study has brought us to this conclusion. Just because we differ doesn’t mean we can’t get along, we need to embrace the differences in one another and FORGIVE each other for the differences we cannot abide in one another.

OH and PS. About the book that was suggested to me, The Analogy of Religion (I haven’t been ignoring you) I downloaded it in pdf format and have been reading through it. I’ll give you my thoughts when I’ve had time to fully review it. In the meantime may I recommend some reading? The Age Of Reason by Thomas Paine, a pdf can be found HERE. Tell me your thoughts.

😉 Take your time. It’s not a fast read by any means. I’m glad you are willing to look into it. God bless. 🙂

Take your time, it is not a fast read by any means. 😉 I’ve already begun looking into your suggested reading, although it may take me a while as I am pretty busy right now. I will give you some feedback. God bless. 🙂

I sincerely apologize for coming off too harsh. But like Andrew has stated, there have been many many many people that come on here with the intention of bashing Catholics. And we tend to get sick of people that try to paint the Church, and Catholics, as evil. All the while ignoring all the endless good the Church and individual Catholics has given to mankind.
Especially when alot of the claims are based upon rheortic, misconceptions or flat out lies.

Jesus is real. Something I know, but can’t quite explain. I pray that you are given the grace to realize it too.

As for the people you mentioned, I don’t want to comment on them. All I will say is that there is a devil and he wants to destroy us. He’ll use any means necessary to kill our relationship with God. Lust, alcohol abuse, gadgets, vain glory, money. That is why I mentioned that list of mortal sins to you in a previous post. (some you pointed out that your family and friends struggle with). God doesn’t send us to hell. We send ourselves by cutting ourselves from Him by selfishly fullfilling our own selfish desires and not following HIS will. It’s not easy being a Faithful Christian. It goes against the norm of modern society and the world hates you because they don’t want their sin dragged out into the light.

Deism is the belief that God dose not intervene in the world, because it is self-sustaining, perfect. This is an old heresy. Deism is incorrect for five reasons:
  1. God created the world, so only He can sustain it. A finite world cannot sustain itself, because it neither has the power nor the energy. Only an omnipotent infinite being can sustain it, so the same Lord who created all things, sustains all things. What is more, if the world could sustain itself, it would have to logically be God, because God is Existence and existence alone is self-existent.
  2. God did not create a perfect world but a world on a journey to perfection. This is evident in many ways: the Big Bang, evolution, the progression of revelation through history, the way the human mind works, etc. Creation has yet to be consummed, and God orders all things to this end. God is Love and love wills the greater good of its beloved.
  3. God promises to always be with man. He promises redemption to fallen man, He says His Name is I AM, He promises fidelity to Israel even as she sinned against Him, and He promises to always be with the Church and the world - even to the end of the ages. Now God is Truth and the truth cannot deceive or be deceived.
  4. God instituted the Holy Eucharist, and just as He changed the bread and wine into Himself, so shall He change the world into His Likeness: i.e., He became incarnate so that all things might become like God. If the world was already perfect, there be no need for the Eucharist, and if there was no need for the Eucharist, neither would there be a need for Judaism, sacrifices, or holocausts. In Christ Jesus, He makes all things new, just as He makes the species into Christ.
  5. God performs miracles and sometimes permits His saints to come down on Earth. He allows His Queen to visit every nation which He has given to her, and He chases away every illness and every devil with His Mercy. The greatest miracles He performs are those of conversion and of Transubstantion. Now if God did not intervene in the world, how than could He perform His mighty works to His glory? And if He allowed the world to sustain itself, how could there be miracles at all?

You are almost entirely missing the point of Deism Eucharisted. However you come closest to understanding it with your point 2. Even there you are off the mark. The point of Deism is that the infinite and perfect Deity does not reveal himself to man (other than through creation.) Most of your points ASSUME the truth of revelation. But you must first prove to a Deist that revelation even exists! For a better understanding check out the link posted by LPLawhead in post 62. Deism is not really like any previous or old heresy. It is a product of the Age of Reason beginning in the late 17th century.

Although Deism is not very old, it continues to influence many. At its core is a mistrust of revealed religions. However Deists do believe in an omnipotent God of creation, and subscribe to a moral order. 😉

Well this has gotten vitriolic! I have no intention of getting in to a giant argument, because Deism is non-evangelistic and I feel no pressing need to make other people Deist’s.

I’d just like to point out that people who use ‘morality’ as a lynchpin argument are actually being really offensive and prejudicial, because, in effect, you are saying I am a terrible person. Of course I’m sure you guys wouldn’t actually say that to individual people, but when you say the whole group has inferior morals you are saying that to every constituent member. Honestly, I do not think morality comes from religion. I think morality happens rather independently of religion. I DO think there’s a link between evangelicalism and rough ‘goodness’ in current times, but not because of the religion itself, just because if you believe in any idea of a loving God enough to devote your life to it, you’re probably more motivated to be a good person!

So let me get this right, Deists and Theists both believe in God and the only real difference is whether or not God interferes with our lives or takes a hands off approach? This does not exactly seem like a big deal to me.

But it is a big deal to Theists and Deists. Are you an Atheist?

Morality comes from God and was further revealed by Jesus Christ. Nobody said you were a terrible person or inferior. We’re all sinners in need of grace. Truth tends to offend most people because, deep down they know there are parts of their life that need to, or will have to, change.
But we can’t pick and choose what is moral and what is not. For instance, you may think porn is perfectly fine. (not saying you do or don’t, just an example) Jesus said, if you look at a woman lustfully you commit adultry in your heart. A hard saying, yes. But all His commandments are for our benefit. Nobody said it was easy. Loving God means keeping His commandments, this is from the lips of Jesus Himself. Perhaps you should read the beatitudes and meditate on them. There are morals issues that can lead directly down the wrong path to your own destruction. But you first need to know what and why. Jesus gave us guidelines and a Church because He loves us and wants to draw us to Him. And God gives us grace through His Church to overcome evil and to remain in friendship with God. Perhaps if you changed your mindset and began to think of it more positively, as a loving Father giving us a gift. Instead of a negative view that religion is something bad you may begin to understand. If you actually came to realize and believe what pertains to our religion you would blow your mind and have a totally different perspective. It’s not about what WE think or our will. It’s about GOD. And putting HIM first above EVERYTHING, including yourself.

The reason there is such a difference is simple, Theists (here used to describe adherents to revealed religious faiths as there are in fact many Theists of different natures) believe in the WORD of God, the Bible, The Qu’ran, The Baghavad Gita, etc. whereas Deists don’t believe in such, the ultimate way for a Deist to learn God’s truth is to study God’s creation, all of existence.

Ok, we’ve already been over this. This right here is the EXACT thing he was talking about as offensive. It seems as though, like me, he doesn’t buy the idea that humans are essentially flawed and fallen creatures in need of divine intervention and otherwise devoid of all trace of moral fiber. We’ve all heard the Jesus propaganda before. This is an intelligent discussion with two opposing view points, please don’t further subject us this kind of evangelical dogma. We just want to chat, we don’t need to buy anything.

On an interesting side note there ARE in fact evangelical Deists. Leaflets on Deism can be found HERE for free usage. Evangelical deism, not a horrible idea. Let’s get MORE people thinking for themselves and rejecting dogmatic authority in the pursuit of real growth and discovery.

Like I said, Truth is offensive to some. Nothing new under the sun. Jesus dealt with your kind when He was here on Earth. It’s not really my problem if you choose to reject it, it’s YOUR problem.
We’ve all heard the Jesus propaganda before.
This is not offensive though.

I can’t take you serious when you make comments like “Jesus propaganda”
Sorry that you’re here only for kicks and not to learn Truth.
Btw, Jesus is God, the second person of the Trinity, so you had best be careful what you say.
We just want to chat, we don’t need to buy anything.
Not “selling” anything. You apparantly have a lot of misconceptions about our Faith. And you have already spread the same old, tired anti-Catholic lies. We’re offering insight. And if you want to chat then quit throwing blasphemies and insults of Jesus and His Church around.
No thanks, I have the Truth as revealed by the second person of the Trinity. I would argue that there are far more people that live akin to deists in America today. And that’s why it’s falling into the cess pool it has become.

Btw, YOU came into a Catholic forum. I get so sick of arrogant people that think they have superior intelligence, because the don’t “buy into” religion, coming on the boards spewing insults and then demanding respect and telling us what we believe. If you expected Catholics to roll over instead of defending Truth and you really have no intention of learning, then perhaps you should go elsewhere and not come back.

Well, clearly we can never have an open discussion because there is no way you can ever see anyone who doesn’t agree with your belief system as anything other than completely wrong. I really don’t see how this can progress any further as neither of us is going to convince the other of anything and we’ve pretty much covered all the key points anyway. Take care catholic.com forums.

You should know that this is the Apologetics Forum, and so by its very definition invites non-Catholics to come and challenge our beliefs. You are mistaken in interpreting as insults the beliefs of others. Apparently you were insulted by the term “Jesus propaganda.” But I am a very staunch Catholic and I was not. Why? Because if you understood the first principles and beliefs of Deists, you would also understand that their objections are often (if not always) met with useless Bible quotes as refutation. It was already stated in this thread more than once, that Deists do not believe in revelation. So your “proof” is worthless. You must first build a case for Divine revelation if you want to have an intelligent discussion with a Deist. It is actually you that should go find another thread (or forum) where your type of argumentation actually does some good.

I apologized to the guy once for being harsh. I was addressing another poster about what Catholics believe (and making a case for revelation), when LPLawhead came back and insulted me again.
I don’t recall him apologizing for his insults, rhetoric or blatant lies. (Catholics murdered millions of innocent people, Catholicism is an opiate for the masses)
It’s pretty apparant that our “Jesus propaganda” will never get him to stop and think. He said himself he doesn’t need a Savior. So I dust my feet. But I will not back down from Truth just because you or him think it’s “worthless”. That fact that you got insulted by me and not by a guy that smeared your Church is strange to me.
