I’m a 21 year old student in Oklahoma. I’m a devout Catholic and planning to apply to the Order of Carmelites as soon as I graduate next year. I recently was hired to be the caretaker of the Methodist Student Center at my college–I have an apartment in the back of the building and I moved in about two weeks ago. Over the past two weeks, I have experienced and witnessed various things that I am convinced are demonic activity. I have also been victim to a number of demonic attacks, as have several of my friends who have visited me in the building.

Initially it was a feeling of being watched from a distance, or feeling as if someone or something was standing right in front of or behind me. Then other things began to happen, on more than one occasion lights have turned themselves on or off and I have heard many strange noises in the building that don’t seem to be natural, including a very loud explosion coming from one end of the building (it was so loud that several workers from the university physical plant came running into the building, afraid it was an explosion in the gas line). I often see things moving out of the corner of my eye. I constantly feel as if I am being threatened/hunted by an evil presence. More than once, I’ve walked into different rooms and felt the presence there, along with an overwhelming heaviness in my body and occasionally lightheadedness or a headache.

This happens at all times of day and night but mostly in the afternoon and at night. It mostly happens while I’m alone in the building (which is most of the time, during the summer) but it has also happened while others have been with me.

Saturday night, three of my friends came over and we attempted to exorcise the demon. I found an exorcism prayer online that is supposedly authorized by the Vatican for laymen to use when satanic or demonic activity is suspected. We all felt the demon leave and we ordered it not to return, invoking the name of God. But Tuesday afternoon I knew it was back. And now it’s worse than ever.

I’m afraid to tell my priest about this. If I tell him, two things could happen: First, he might not believe me. Second, if he believes me he’ll want to come here and do something about it and that would make the Methodists think I’m crazy (I’ve already tried telling the local Methodist minister about it and she didn’t believe me), and I might lose my job.

I pray the chaplet of St. Michael every day and pray the Rosary often as well, both with the specific intention of being freed from demonic influences. But whatever this is, it’s still here and I need it gone.

What can I do about this? Does what I’m describing sound like it could be demonic?

Also, one of the cabinets in my apartment has two VERY disturbing ‘faces’ in the woodgrain. I think it’s just my imagination but they’re freaking me out. I’m even afraid to cover them up.

I’m afraid to sleep, I’m afraid to clean the building or do anything here. The only place I feel safe in the entire building is the chapel, because I have felt an angelic presence near the altar.

Can my priest do anything? I know the general steps involved in getting an exorcism approved for a person but what about a building? Is it possible that this demon is following me, or that it might be attached to the building? What should I do?

Please reply with any suggestions you might have. And if you don’t have any suggestions, please pray that I will be protected!

Eucharisted,

I pray that every single day along with the chaplet of St. Michael. He’s my patron saint, so I take it very seriously.

My priest can’t bless the apartment because the Methodist church won’t allow it. I need a way to get rid of it that doesn’t involve my priest blessing the place, because that’s not possible.

You could either get a blessing by a priest or move out. That’s your only options. Personally, I’d get the blessing, even if it got me trouble. Blessing a house ain’t illegal, so you won’t go to jail for it, and if you suffer for blessing a house, than you’ll be sharing in Jesus’ Cross, and we must glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If you invite your priest round as a friend and then ask him to bless the apartment while he’s there, I don’t think the college could object to that.

With respect, it’s difficult to assess a situation like this via email, but I would advise you to also discuss what you’ve been experiencing with a psychologist. I’m not saying you’re crazy and I do believe that demonic activity is possible, but it’s best to explore all possible avenues.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I’ve never felt anything like ‘that’ where I’ve ever lived, but I did have a bad apartment in NYC in a bad neighborhood with a disgruntled prior tenant, not to mention the creepy noises that echoed throughout the place. If you have the St. Joseph’s Missal (Traditional Mass), there are some evening prayers in there which I pray for and peace safety during the night. If not, here is one of them below…

“Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord, this habitation, and drive far from it all the snares of the enemy: let thy holy Angels dwell herein, to preserve us in peace; and may thy blessing be upon us evermore. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.”

Best of luck and may God bless you and your apartment!

Tybourne,

I don’t need to see a psychologist–five other people have seen, heard, and felt the same things as me. The only thing that has happened to me that no one else has experienced is this: On two different occasions I have woken up and felt like something was pressing down hard on my chest, holding me down. When I finally got up, I had bruises on my arms and chest. That’s the scariest thing that has happened and I’m not liking this. But five other people have seen the lights turn on and off by themselves, heard the strange noises, and experienced the same crushing headaches and sudden nausea/dizziness when the presence was around, and felt like they were being stared at by something evil.

I’ll talk to my priest then. Confessions are Saturday so I suppose I can bring it up then…

Prayer and intercession to the Blessed Mother might also be of some help. I heard she is pretty awesome! Also, don’t give up, your situation is in my prayers.

I have had things happen to me at a younger age that I know was demonic. What made it finally go away was my knowledge of gods protection. If you ask God to protect you with pure faith then he will. After i did this things started to stop. I was almost eager, as if “I dare you to mess with me” kind of attitude. not by your strengh but by the Lords. with the Lord on your side against demons is like having holyfield by your side against a five year old girl! You must truly believe God has given you protection and power! Doing so makes you stronger than any demon! Demons uses your own mind to do things so remember that nothing can hurt you unless you allow it. Next time somthing happens confront it as a child of god fearless and ready to fight! Think of Jacob wrestling the angel. I can go anywhere that is so called haunted or possesed without any fear with the knowledge that nothing would dare mess with me! You need to do the same! It would not hurt to have a priest come in and bless the house also.

Until the priest blesses the house, fill it up with sacramentals, rosaries, blessed holy cards, etc. Also wear a blessed scapular. Bless yourself with holy water often. Most importantly, make sure you are in a state of grace- this will greatly reduce any power over you.

Have your priest exorcize your house. He should have the prayer of exorcism at his rectory.

Mommyof4,

Are laypersons allowed to wear scapulars? I thought only religious could wear them. I’m planning to join the Order of Carmelites after I finish college, so the Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel might not be a bad idea if I’m allowed to wear it.

Yes, lay people may wear scapulars.

Why would the Methodist church fire you if you have your apartment blessed? I can understand if you did major renovations without their permission, or if you painted it funky colours, they might get upset, but blessing a dwelling makes no material changes. Again, as others have said, you can invite your priest over for dinner and have him bless it while he’s there. No need to involve the Methodist church in the arrangement at all. I still don’t understand why they would not permit it or would fire you if they found out???

I’ve had these same problems in the past. There is an evil spirit of some description roaming my neighbourhood here. It is not confined to my house. I’ve spoken with my neighbours and they have all experienced it too. Mostly it manifests as a feeling of an evil menacing presence and an abominable sulfurous stench.

I’ve had my house blessed twice. The second time, we had invited the priest over for dinner and he offered. Neither time did I mention the spirit. Later, when I had gotten really fed up with the bad smell, I went through the house sprinkling blessed salt and holy water, praying first in English, using the long St. Michael prayer, using my own words, then in tongues, asking assistance from the Holy Spirit. By the time I got to the last room, my hair was standing on end and I could almost hear a voice crying, "No, NO NO, stop stop,’ then it faded away. I haven’t had any problems here since.

You need to rely on your baptism. You are washed in the Blood of Jesus and you now belong to Him. The evil one no longer has any power over you. Be Not Afraid. Christ goes before you. It is not your power but Christ’s that banishes. Hide yourself in Jesus, like in the song Rock of Ages, Cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.

In addition to using blessed salt and holy water, place a blessed crucifix in every room. Evil spirits hate the image of Christ’s victory and try to avoid it.

Definitely mention all of this to your priest in confession and take his advice on what to do. I’m sure if you explain to him your concerns about your landlord, he can take it into consideration.

Laypersons may most assuredly wear scauplars.
I think it’s better to move out than to suffer these attacks. I certainly would. Anyone who refuses to allow you to recieve the spiritual services offered by the Church is someone you should stay away from. Continue to pray. Have you tried the Rosary? And of course, I must recomend you ask St. George to pray for you.
You say you are afraid the priest will not believe you… he should. If he does not, go to another. And if he does not, then another…
Keep Holy Water around. Sprinkle it around your room. And cover those ‘faces’ in the wood if they are bothering you, though I doubt they are really anything.
You said they got worse after the ‘exorcism’ your friends and you attemped. Though only a priest can actually exorcise something, such a prayer God will certainly hear, and the demons obviously won’t likje this. Just keep praying, and if you must, leave the apartment. It is better than this!

That’s the exorcism that I used last weekend. It’s confusing because first it says only a priest can say that, then it says “the faithful may use it in their own name”. So that’s what I did.

And yes, I know the faces are just random things in the grain of the wood… But still creepy. I covered them with duct tape.

I read something about being “invested” with the scapular before you can wear it. How does that work?

And why have I never heard anyone mention blessed salt? I have holy water but I didn’t know there was such a thing as blessed salt. How would I use it and where do I get it? As far as I know, our parish doesn’t keep a supply of it.

lasalettejourney.blogspot.com/2008/03/why-blessed-salt.html

You can buy ordinary table salt at the store and take it to the priest to be blessed.
Any amount may be presented to a priest for his blessing, using the following official prayer from the Roman Ritual:
“Almighty God, we ask you to bless this salt, as once you blessed the salt scattered over the water by the prophet Elisha. Wherever this salt (and water) is sprinkled, drive away the power of evil, and protect us always by the presence of your Holy Spirit. Grant this through Christ our Lord Amen.”

Oh yes, absolutely! Here is a link where you can get one, and find out more information about it: carmelnet.org/scapular/scapular.htm

Awesome, I just ordered one. 🙂

I spoke with the local Methodist minister yesterday. She agreed to perform a formal blessing over the building and my apartment, so I guess this should all be over soon! I hope, anyway.

The only reason I haven’t had my priest do it is that it’s Methodist property, owned by their church, so we can’t do anything without their permission. I mean I guess I could have a priest come in the middle of the night and do it but it wouldn’t be right to do that… So the Methodists will have to do it their way for now.
