Some people say that the devil can possess you for having too many mortal sins. But also people say that there is no obvious cause for possessions and they seem to be random. So which is it, or is it that mortal sins are necessary but not sufficient conditions for possession?

Can different types of mortal sins dispose you more towards possession?

just curious -not trying to get in contact with the devil.

The spiritual world is vast and complex. It is so vast that nearly any statement is true in some circumstance. Generalizations are rough.

Let’s say that a person has a serious problem with anger and flares up quite frequently with it. If this goes unchecked for a long time and becomes more frequent, this person may have a big battle to fight if he/she wants to serve the Lord. They may need special help of deliverance from a priest, and the need to pray much to rid themselves of the long-time bad habit. Ditto for other types of sins as well. Of course, frequent confession and reception of the Eucharist is needed.

So, while the word “possession” doesn’t apply here, their habitual and strong anger may be so ingrained in them that they need deliverance from that bad habit.

If u have Jesus in you, you can not be possessed by a demon…Have Jesus fill your life and a devil cannot possess you…If some1 “used to be a christian” but not they are posessed…lety me tell u that man or woman never did have God in their life

It is possible that one who followed Christ, and then allows him/herself to be led to dabble in occult practices will have some serious spiritual problems that they will need help in.

Catholics do not believe in “once saved, always saved”.

It would be appreciated if you would not write in “text”, as not everyone is used to communicating that way.

This statement does not always hold true. What about Emily Rose who was very devoutly Catholic and loved Jesus and Mary. The Story of Emily Rose was based off a real person whose name I cannot remember at the time. I am sure there are others.

I think perhaps it is both. Some possession are the result of mortal sin. Some when you look at them are so random that they seem to defy explanation. Some others happen when one is not in a state of mortal sin or have done nothing to “deserve” or “merit” the possession as a result of their actions or non-actions.

I would think the mortal sins that directly seek recourse outside of God does open you up for possession, ie Divination, Witchcraft, Satanism, those types of things. Anytime you are invoking things other than God, that really throws open the door.

God bless.

I was wondering, does anything having to do with the occult (even tangentially) open one up for demonic possession or influence/attack?

I think probably not but I ask anyway since anything dealing with the devils is dangerous and anything dangerous should only be cautiously approached.

It depends on how you define tangentially. I would say yes any involvement with the occult can open one up for demonic attack and possesion. Don’t forget about obession and oppression.

The best way to not open the door up in this manner, is not to open it up to begin with. Stay away from that stuff. It is evil. Anything dangerous should be avoided at all costs.

God bless.

tangentially as in, the study of the occult, or the de facto practice of the occult w/o full knowledge (that is to practice the occult in a venial manner).

I’m beginning to sense a pattern to your threads of late, OP. Are you thinking about or in fact dabbling with something occult? Or afraid someone is? The occult is dangerous and not to be messed around with.

Actually no, but rather I find myself drawn to the christian demonology, which is permissible, but I want to be extremely careful since anything this dangerous (dealing as it does with dangerous spirits) and shrouded in mystery demands high exactitude. And this almost nervous compulsion for exactness is what drives all these threads on the occult -a subject which often leaves me in a fearful confusion.

You may be interested in reading the book “Ransomed From Darkness” by Moira Noonan. It is not written in a sensational dramatic way.

It is the story of a young woman who got started in Reiki, and her involvement in the occult grew after that.
Finally, she returned to the Catholic faith. Well written!

I reccomend reading a book by the Chief exorcist of the Vatican. I cannot recall the title, but it should be easy to google. Its by Fr. Gabriele Amorth. It deals with all of his experiences as an exorcist and he covers a whole chapter on ways we invite the Devil. He seems to think It can happen to anyone, but that certain types of people attract more of it. He claims it happens to holy people to test and strengthen them and also to grave sinners. That being said, I am not sure if I believe in possesion, even after reading the book. The so called proof is lacking in my opinion. The whole Idea of a satan, created by a God who burns us eternally in hell for our weakness seems a bit hard to swallow.

Our Church teaches that the angels were all created good and were given a test. Those who would not obey ( “non servium” , about 1/3 of the angels) with Lucifer leading them, fell and are without God forever.
Unlike man, the angels could see at a glance what the outcome of their choice was, so they were given sufficient warning.

When God gives something he does not take it back, and so He uses the angels to tempt us. They are on a “leash” so to speak, and can only do what God allows them to do. We grow spiritually by resisting temptation. What our Church reveals to us is true

If we stay close to the Lord in prayer and the Sacraments we have nothing to fear.

The book “Angels and Demons” by Peter Kreeft is very good at answering questions about them.

The title of the book you mentioned in your post is “An Exorcist Tells His Story” by Gabriele Amorth.

So why would a supposed loving God “Allow” us to burn in hell forever? If your child made a mistake would you punish him forever? Seems a bit harsh to me. But if you believe that God has created a system in which we we can “choose Hell”, can we really have the audacity of calling him a loving Father?

A wilfull serious sin is not the same as a"mistake". We have our lifetime to make our free-will choice to repent when necessary. Our Lord Jesus Christ did everything possible to show His love for us, and gives us all the help we need to receive his grace. He is loving indeed!

Let me ask you a question. If you went to your dad, and told him that you hated him and never wanted to see him again ever, what would he do? He would be hurt, yes, and for a time even try to regain the relationship. But after his years of efforts to rekindle a relationship with you, you still keep sending him away. Finally, he says, ok, this is what you want. You don’t want a relationship with me. I will respect your wishes, and I will not be near you again.
This is not a perfect analogy, but in a way, this is how it is with us and God. He gives us chance after chance, but if we keep sending Him away, that we want nothing to do with Him, he will honor our decision. And that is what Hell is. The absence of God. I think at that point the flames or anything else that may or may not be there will be inconsequential. What makes Hell, Hell, is the absolute absence of God that was a deliberate choice of whoever is there.

As for the OP - it is not healthy to indulge in a constant preoccupation with the occult. Not to say that we should bury our heads in the sand, figuratively speaking, but I have read many of your other threads, and it is a little concerning. The occult is a lot more dangerous than, sadly, many Christians realize. The best thing is to immerse yourself in good solid Catholic and Biblical teachings and books. If you do decide to pursue study of Christian Demonology as you call it, may I suggest consulting with a knowledgeable priest to oversee your study and to assist you in prayer and act as your “safety line” lest you stray too far - or to decide if such study is even appropriate or not for you at this point in your spiritual journey.

OP,

I do agree with Daizies here. If you do study demonology please do so under a knowledgeable priest. Spiritual direction I believe is a MUST here and also obedience to the counsel that the priest gives. I would also make sure the priest is orthodox and not liberal.

There is another book by Father Amorth, its More Stories from an Exorcist or something like that. There are two books on it.

It is one thing to want to study demonology but it is usually undertaken when one’s faith is solid and one has been wont to practice it for several years. The devil can destroy and wreck lives because peeps want to study things like this, because well they don’t see the trouble coming beforehand and it is only too late that they realize something is amiss. I am not saying that this will happen to you, I only am saying this to caution you.

God bless.

We can call Him a loving Father. He respects our free will and decision. If we constantly live our lives over and over and over again choosing other things and not Him or even deciding to abandon Him and pursue other things. He will honor our choice. He does not send us to Hell, we send ourselves to Hell.

It is His justice which makes it eternal. You cannot have a Merciful God without having a Just God. God cannot treat anyone unfairly or unjustly, for God is perfect, and to treat someone unfairly is to be imperfect.

In the bible it ways that God is willing that NONE should perish. This does not sound like a non-loving Father to Me. For God so loved the world, that he sent his Son to save the world, that whoever so beliveith in Him shall be saved. Jesus said, “I am the vine and you are the branches, apart from me you can do nothing.” Apart from His grace and having His Presence in His life, that is hell.

I should think that someone who forces us to act against our free will should and rightly should be called not loving. To me that would be quite audacious.

God bless.
