Do you think a person possessed by a demon or demons, would know they were possessed? I wonder if the demons would cause the person to think its just them going crazy, and not some supernatural explanation…?
I would imagine that if a person gets possessed they would experience a drastic change in themselves; they’d probably feel themselves out of control at certain times, like something more powerful than they are were controlling them, in certain situations anyway. The deceased exorcist Malachi Martin described what a person is like when he is possessed. He talks about the possessed person in such a way that makes me believe that it would be pretty obvious to him and to others that he is being possessed by demons. Some people are demonically oppressed or obsessed, they are quite different from people who are demonically possessed.

God bless you.

From what I have read, there are demons that posses people who are dumb, and the people are unaware that they are possessed.

I personally have come to believe that there are a number of people who are not obsessed nor possessed, but rather are all the same experiencing the presense of the devil within them which devil constantly urges them to do evil. They are just mean acting people who might not admit to voices, but still hear them urging them on to do evil. And I don’t mean just a temptation now and then but a rather stream of ideas to do evil. Yet these devils have not taken control of the person as in possession.

Now I know this is maybe a rather “out there” idea, but I don’t know just what makes certain evil people do what they do unless something is mean in them urging them on. And they seem to have surges of evil.

I don’t think we are seeing less, maybe even more. Read the books written by the sanctioned exorcists.
I agree with you. After watching the video of the Islamist calmly cutting the head off of a human being and seeing pictures of other Islamists shooting people lined in a ditch it is very difficult for me to avoid the conclusion that we are rife with demonic activity in this day and age. These are certainly Satanic acts, why would we not attribute them to their originator?

Hello Faith.
No, that’s the one. OK, I watched a little more of it and again, that’s,enough.
I wonder though, just how well the possessed people are examined by psychologists and psychiatrists.
Somewhere, I think it’s the book I was talking about yesterday, there was a carefully worded sentence that said something about patients not having any known mental illness or something to that effect. Leaves open the possibility that they might be sick in the head with something unusual the doctor cant diagnose.
I’m not sure if you are aware of it but the International Association of Exorcists is well respected. They ONLY do exorcisms AFTER the person(s) have been thoroughly examined by psychiatrists, psychologists and medical doctors and have determined that yes, indeed, the problem is demonic not mental illness or hysteria or a medical problem such as epilepsy. They were founded by Father Amorth, the guy whose book you just got. Here is a little about them from the land of Wiki:

**International Association of Exorcists is a Roman Catholic organization **that was founded in 1990 by six priests including the world-famous exorcist of Rome, Father Gabriele Amorth and Father Jeremy Davies. Its statutes have been approved by the Roman Catholic Church on June 13, 2014.

Although the membership is restricted and exclusive, by 2000 there were over two hundred members. A priest must have permission of his bishop to join and they meet bi-annually in Rome. The association sends out a quarterly newsletter where members can tell of particularly difficult or interesting cases.

Within the Roman Catholic Church a priest may only do an exorcism with the express consent of his bishop or local ordinary, and only, to the extent necessary, after an examination of the patient by doctors and psychologists in order to determine the affliction has no natural origin. A priest is required by canon law to be devout, knowledgeable, prudent, and possess integrity of life.

Father Amorth began the organization in the hopes of increasing the number of official exorcists worldwide and to alert more diocese of the problem, which he believes has been ignored or suppressed by some priests and bishops. Although Father Amorth is the honorary president, following the death of Father Giancarlo Gramolazzo in November 2010, Capuchin father Cipriano de Meo (born January 5, 1924) has been named as new president.

Now Faith, I know you tend to believe that things demonic may be natural in origin and you’ve expressed your concerns about this and have said that perhaps even those accounts of demonic exorcism in the Bible are in need of up-dating in light of modern understanding of mental illness and the advancements of the medical sciences. I can understand this, but I have different opinion about the ruinous results of this wholesale “exorcism” of all things demonic from the modern minds of most in Western Civilization by the scientists who not only determined that ALL cases of things demonic were mental illness issues but second handedly labeled everyone who still believes in things of the devil as perhaps mentally ill themselves or simply behaving like un-enlightened superstitious medieval thinkers who are backwards and backwoods. Really. Why do you suppose you have the doubts you do? You were taught this in school and it is the usual outlook in the main stream media. I cannot lay any blame on a person who simply believes what they were taught about things demonic by their school and society at large. But I don’t think that way, not at all.

Adam Blai is a very credible person as is his Ministry. He is very well respected by those in this country who are involved in this particular Ministry and who are supportive of those who carry it out. It isn’t smoke and mirrors nor are any of them simply catering to the hysteria of superstitious persons. It is a very valid Ministry and part of the reason they have such a hard time gaining acceptance is because there were many Priests and even Bishops who completely abandoned this Ministry of the Church for decades. That is why some even to this day have to convince Priests that the devil is real and active and ruining lives still and why many say their Priests believe there is no need for Exorcism in Church ministry and why they truly believe all that medieval nonsense has been laid to rest once and for all. But we Catholics know this to be error.

Oh well, I’ve said too much again. Please forgive me. But Faith, if you really are interested it would be worth your while to watch the whole video of Mr. Blai and find out what the Church truly believes and teaches about things demonic.

Glad to read how strict they are in ruling out mental and physical illnesses now, but it wasn’t always that way. In fact IIRC, the priest behind the real life instance of demonic possession that inspired The Exorcist, later doubted it was a true possession.

Can you provide a source for the claim that the Priest who participated in the true story behind the movie later changed his story? What is the IIRC?

IIRC=If I recall correctly. And no, no link. It’s something I’d read years ago but if I stumble upon it, I’ll let you know.

That is good that you cannot find a source, because it isn’t true. I’ve read the accounts several times. The movie isn’t fact, but some of the details actually pretty close to a few things. But then again, we don’t expect accuracy from an industry who business is to fool folks into believing things that aren’t real anyway.

The Church has been performing exorcisms from her beginning. We have had a ritual at least since 13th century.

I don’t understand why people, especially clergy, deny that it happens???

I know that mental illness and demonic possession are NOT one and the same thing, but somebody who happens to be mentally could still get possessed. Think about it – if a mentally ill person dabbles in the occult and opens the door of his heart and soul to the devil, he most certainly can become possessed.

God bless you.

Also, the interview you posted is misleading in that it sounds like Fr. Halloran was just interviewed in 2010. He actually died in 2005.

I agree. And true possessions very rare.

I dont claim to be an expert but im from st louis and we 've grown up hearing this story. My own mother was in the same ward (not at the same time) as this kid was, at Alexian Brothers Hospital. And yes, there are sources who say fr halloran wasnt convinced of true demonic possession.
