Democrats have declared war on the Catholic Church, with new laws that threaten to bankrupt Catholic schools, hospitals, charities and parishes. Thus far, the worst attacks have come in New York.

“We’ve taken a lot of hits this year,” Dennis Poust, spokesman for the New York State Catholic Conference, the policy arm of the state’s Catholic bishops, tells Newsmax. “Outside the government, the Catholic Church is the largest provider of health, human services and education in the [New york]. But some legislators are so driven by malice that they’re willing to see our charities and schools go under.”

The Empire State’s Democrats are attacking on three fronts.

A proposal to require all hospitals to perform abortions, or lose their state license would put Catholic hospitals out of business.

Major funding cuts for Catholic schools by Gov. David Paterson, who continues to force the parochial schools to run state-mandated programs at their own expense.

An effort by Democratic lawmakers to abolish the statute of limitations on sex abuse lawsuits against the Church, allowing people to sue over decades-old cases in which the alleged perpetrators are dead.

The proposed sex-abuse law applies only to private institutions such as the Church and the Boy Scouts. Public schools are exempt. Yet sex abuse is more common in public schools than in private institutions.

"The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests”, concluded a 2002 study by Hofstra University scholar Charol Shakeshaft. It estimated that 6 to 10 percent of U.S. public school students had been sexually abused by teachers and school employees.

An Associated Press investigation found that 485 “moral misconduct” charges were brought against New York State teachers between 2001 and 2005, most involving sex.

By contrast, new charges of sex abuse against Catholic priests in New York numbered “less than 10” during that same five-year period, says Poust.

Given these findings, the Child Victims’ Act of New York (Assembly Bill Number A.2596) seems strangely off the mark. First introduced in 2006 by Democratic state assemblywoman Margaret Markey, the bill is scheduled for a committee vote next week, to determine whether or not it will go to the assembly floor.

The bill targets private entities such as churches, but exempts government entities such as public schools. Under current law, a person who was abused as a minor can file suit up to five years after turning 18.

The new bill would suspend that five-year limit. It would open a one-year window, during which anyone could sue the Church – or other private entities – for alleged abuse going back 60, 70 years or more.

A similar law passed in California in 2002 produced so many lawsuits that the Church could not afford legal defense. It settled hundreds of cases, no matter how dubious the evidence, paying out more than $1 billion dollars.

Democrats hope for a similar bloodletting in New York. Markey’s current bill is modeled on the 2002 California law.

Any sex abuse cases should be settled. Maybe we as a Church need to learn to prohibit abuse.

As for the rest, deeply depressing and saddening. 😦 😦 😦

Let the Evil Ones attack the Catholic Church if they dare
and they DO dare.
Only let them be warned:
The Catholic Church is the Bride of Christ and the
Temple indwelt corporately by the Holy Spirit who directs Her.
In making war on the Catholic Church,
they are making war on the Holy Spirit,
and for THAT, they will lose EVERYTHING,
including their possibility of eternal salvation.
God help them see the horrifying outcome,
for themselves,
of their nefarious, evil activities.

Fr Benedict Groeshel spoke of this tonight and the unfairness of it…It is impossible to go back as far as they intend to with any accuracy, many of the people are dead

He said the church is in for a very hard time…As a Psychologist , I am sure he knows what he is talking about…The church is targeted I suspect it’s because they dare to stand up to the legislators regarding FOCA

If the same standard were applied to public institutions such as public schools, school districts would have to shut down.

Even with false accusations from 70 years ago for which the merits of the case cannot be determined?

Sadly, settlement is often the least costly course, and not only in these cases. I worked for a government agency which routinely settled employment discrimination suits rather than litigate them, regardless of their merit or lack of it, because it was cheaper. Everybody was guaranteed something just by filing a complaint.

For the Church: Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.Luke 6:30 perhaps. :o  🤷

For the law in general and private citizens who are not operating based on Christian principles, no.

Close them down. If this passes that’s what should happen.

You take their money, they can cut it. Should never have touched the state money anyway.

The statute of limitations is strictly a civil issue. It’s foolish to eliminate it - demagoguery, even. But we have no one to blame but rogue priests and enabling Bishops.

I really can’t agree that Christ was here advocating that his Church constantly cave in to every possible false accusation brought against it.

No kiddin’! IMESHO, the real travesty is to allow so many of these spurious cases to have been settled. There were at least two cases (personal knowledge) that LA Diocese wanted settled and the priests went beyond politely asking the diocese to defend, not settle the cases. In both cases, the diocese told em they were on their own. Both received private donations, and both were exonerated. According to both, others lacking resources, were forced to go along, because the cardinal didn’t want to show where he had been negligent.

Not only are teachers exempt, but cops, doctors, fireman, coaches, social workers, etc, too. The Catholic Church was far below other entities, but has been singled out by the secularists. It is an all out attack to neutralize the influence of the Church on society.

While I agree the schools shouldn’t receive funding, I also agree tax credits for tuition should be offered as the savings to school districts is at least double.

Someone asked in another thread when persecution of the Church would begin.Well it looks like it has in your country. It certainly has in mine.

Let’s not rehash the homosexual priest predator scandal. The Church has addressed this issue and is paying for it-through the nose.We will suffer the scandal for hundreds of years. But to not defend oneself when accused falsely is offensive, ludicrous and bespeaks of a death wish at worse or masochism at best.It is also an offense against justice and truth.

I am hard put to describe any of the above as persecution or an attempt to bankrupt the Church. Bishops could have put an end to the sex abuse scandals long ago by piling them all up and settling them all and moving on.

However, they refused to do so.

Geewilikers, the Catholics and the Boy Scouts are singled out and the secularists still want to blame it on the Church…all the while the union rich, Democrat lackey, public employees, get a pass…baffling.

The American hierachy has basically been an arm of the Democratic party for a long time now. The abortion thing made bishops have some friction with Dems but the bishops basically winked and nodded over this.

It continues - Cardinal Mahoney righfully chastises Bishop Williamson from having any presence in a Catholic church in LA. But never has confronted Catholics in LA who openly support abortion with any serious challenge.

For all the hoopla over US bishops chastising pro-abortion Catholic politicians this past election the truth is less than half did.

The hierarchy is IMO in defacto schism and has been for a long time. They simply ignore directives from Rome - think JP 2’s document on Catholic universities. And Rome does nothing - an admission in effect that it has no control.

The Dems in the state of NY I think know all this. They are pushing this now and fully expect I suspect a similar reaction to that of Catholic adoption agencies in Britian over a Rome directive not to adopt out the gay couples. The large majority of Catholic agencies ignored it. Some changed their status as Catholic - but wink, wink, nod nod - I don’;t doubt for aminute some catholic bishops and dioceses in UK will continue to fund and work with these agencies.

With the NY Catholic hospitals I bet most comply. They will change their status from Catholic or be taken over by lay boards. The bishops will grumble but ultimately things will go on - including financial support from the NY bishops to these hospitals.

I could be wrong. But the Dms in NY know the schism is real and I think they are pushing to make it official.

Those making over $250k per year will have reduced tax deductibility on church/charitable giving. High income earners (the people who pay most of the bills for the church) will only be able to recieve 28% back from the Government for church giving, AFTER HAVING PAID 35% TO UNCLE SAM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

This is essentially the fine for thinking that the Church or charity should be helping people when it is clear that the Dems want all helping of other to be done through the Marxist state.

it is possible to donate to a cause and not deduct it on your tax returns.🤷

Nice try.

Taxation affects behaviour. The church and charities will get less money, all else being equal.

Do you deny this?
