DENVER, Colorado, June 1, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A Denver Catholic bishop is warning parents that membership in the Girl Scouts could carry the danger of making their daughters more receptive to the pro-abortion agenda.

In a Wednesday column for the Denver Catholic Register, Denver Auxiliary Bishop James D. Conley observes that in the last year a growing number of parents and youth ministers have shared concerns with him over the Girl Scouts alignment with groups advocating abortion.

He urges parents to browse for themselves the websites of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and Girl Scouts USA (GSUSA) to see the organization’s approach to “sexuality, ‘choice’, and reproductive issues,” saying this exercise “may be a sobering experience.”

The Girl Scouts have faced strong criticism especially in the last year after the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) revealed that they participated in a United Nations workshop distributing the Planned Parenthood sex education pamphlet “Happy, Healthy, and Hot.”

The pamphlet instructs young girls not to think of sex as “just about vaginal or anal intercourse.” “There is no right or wrong way to have sex. Just have fun, explore and be yourself!” it states.

Just last month, two teenage girls went public with their decision to leave the Girl Scouts after eight years because of the organization’s ties to Planned Parenthood.

The “Healthy Happy and Hot” color brochure was written and produced in January 2010 by the International Planned Parenthood Federation to use in foreign countries to distribute to children with HIV / AIDS.

(Read that again in case you missed it; yes Planned Parenthood sells abortion internationally as a federation of businesses.)

They do this most easily by becoming the “sex expert” in a young adult’s life. They then sell these young children low dose birth control which they will become pregnant on.

In the “Healthy Happy and Hot” brochure, the IPPF tells teens that their HIV/AIDS information is personal and that it is against their human rights to be required to inform their sexual partners that they carry HIV which causes AIDS.

At the same UN meeting, which ended last Friday (March 2010) the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides produced a document saying young women “demand their sexual and reproductive rights including access to comprehensive sexuality education, and sexual and reproductive services including contraception and emergency contraception, in order to avoid unintended pregnancies” and also called for access to “safe abortion.”

These are mainly local issues, as I understand (the Girl scouts are not as strongly organized across the country as the Boy Scouts are). If you are fortunate enough to have a group that is associated with a church and/or its adult leadership has values in line with Catholic teaching, you will likely see little of this negative effect.

If that is not the case, it might be advisable to check out an alternative like the one Turtle18 cited or the American Heritage Girls. Sometimes homeschool groups will get together for similar activities (though they often meet during traditional school hours, limiting participation by traditionally schooled children).

In third world countries where HIV / AIDS in rampant and sex is discouraged through abstinence, Planned Parenthood sets up business and steps in to encourage HIV infected teens to have sex and tells them that it’s against their “rights” to be required to inform their sexual partners that they are infected with the HIV / AIDS virus.

India has one of the highest numbers of HIV infected persons in the world, estimated at approximately 2.5 million in 2007 [1-3]. Planned Parenthood tells these infected teens that they are “Healthy, Happy and Hot”.

In the U.S. an HIV infected person without insurance spends $16,000 on medication a year controlling the HIV virus so that it doesn’t advance into AIDS.

Planned Parenthood is a business that makes its money by killing children in the womb. They are not a health care organization.

This becomes most evident when Planned Parenthood encourages promiscuous sexual activity in HIV infected teens; when they tell teens they don’t need to inform their sexual partners of their HIV infection; and then when they “offer” teens a way out of pregnancy by offering to sell them the morning after pill and an abortion when they become pregnant.

During 2009, some 2.6 million people became infected with HIV, including an estimated 370,000 children.

Most of these children are babies born to women with HIV, who acquire the virus during pregnancy, labour or delivery, or through breast milk.

Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is by far the region most-affected by the AIDS epidemic. The region has just over 10% of the world’s population, but is home to 68% of all people living with HIV.

An estimated 1.8 million adults and children became infected with HIV during 2009 - contributing to a total of 22.5 million people living with HIV in the region.

Adult HIV prevalence varies considerably across sub-Saharan Africa - from 0.2% in Madagascar to almost 26% in Swaziland.

An estimated 1.3 million people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2009. Antiretroviral therapy has had a significant impact on the number of deaths from AIDS; in Southern Africa alone the scale-up of treatment contributed to an 18% decline in AIDS-related deaths between 2004 and 2009. The scale-up of PMTCT programmes has also contributed to a decline in the number of new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths among children.

Women are particularly affected by HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. Southern Africa accounts for around 40% of the global total of women living with HIV.

Asia

Until recently it was thought that India was home to around 5.7 million people living with HIV - more than any other country in the world.

In July 2007 this estimate was revised to between 2 million and 3.1 million, based on better data and the results of a national household survey.

Because of the major revision of the Indian estimate, the number of people living with HIV in Asia is now thought to be substantially less than the figure published by UNAIDS in late 2006.

The current estimate is around 4.9 million.

National adult prevalence is still under 1% in the majority of this region’s countries.

However some Asian countries are very large and national averages may obscure serious epidemics in some smaller provinces and states. Although national adult HIV prevalence in India, for example, is below 1%, some states have an estimated prevalence well above this level.

Other countries with large numbers of people living with HIV include China (740,000), Thailand (530,000) and Viet Nam (280,000).

Caribbean

Around 17,000 people were newly infected with HIV in the Caribbean during 2009 - 3,000 less than 2001.

The number of new infections has been declining slightly, but the total number of people living with HIV in the region has remained relatively stable. By the end of 2009 240,000 people were living with HIV - an adult prevalence of 1.0%.

Eastern Europe and Central Asia

The AIDS epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is rapidly expanding.

Some 130,000 people were infected with HIV in 2009, bringing the total number of people living with the virus to around 1.4 million.

In 2009 an estimated 76,000 people died from AIDS-related illness, four times the number in 2001.

Worst affected countries are the Russian Federation and Ukraine, but HIV continues to spread in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

It is now estimated that around 980,000 people are living with HIV in the Russian Federation.

North Africa and the Middle East

The notion that this region has been largely unaffected by the global epidemic is not supported by the latest estimates, which indicate that 75,000 people acquired HIV in 2009, bringing the total number of people living with HIV and AIDS in the Middle East and North Africa to an estimated 460,000.

In 2009 an estimated 23,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses, an increase from 8,300 in 2001.

Although reliable data are difficult to obtain, it appears North Africa and the Middle East are the only regions which have seen significant increases in the number of adults and children living with HIV, number of people newly infected with HIV and deaths due to AIDS-related illnesses.

Central and South America

An estimated 1.4 million people were living with HIV in Central and South America at the end of 2009.

Although the number of people living with HIV continues to increase, the number of people newly infected with HIV appears to be decreasing slightly. Around 92,000 people became newly infected with HIV in 2009, 7,000 less than 2001. Around 58,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2009 in the region.

North America, Oceania and Western and Central Europe

The total number of people living with HIV continues to rise in higher-income countries, largely due to widespread access to antiretroviral therapy, which prolongs the lives of those living with HIV.

It is estimated that 2.3 million people are living with HIV in North America and Western and Central Europe, an increase from 1.8 million in 2001.

In these two regions, a total of 35,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2009.

The number of people living with HIV in Oceania almost doubled from 28,000 in 2001 to 57,000 in 2009.

In recent years there has been a significant increase in new infections among men who have sex with men in higher-income countries.

In both North America and Western and Central Europe women account for less than a third of all people living with HIV.

‘There is no right or wrong way to have sex. Just have fun, explore, and be yourself!’ What kind of lunacy is this? I knew those Girl Scouts were hiding something behind all that cuteness. I’d like to hear Planned Parenthood’s side of the issue.

It really just depend on the area that you live in and who is the troop leaders and such. I am an ex-girl scout from Iowa in what they used to call the Mississippi Valley Girl Scouts. My mom was a leader for several years and this never came up. If this issue is true, then it is of recent changes in certain areas within the United States, but not necessarily all.
