Speaking as someone who has suffered with it for most of her life, I like to offer it up to the Lord as (mental) Suffering.

And I pray that He gives me the grace to carry this cross.

I have been depressed or anxious for most of my 44 years.
I have a mild form of Schizophrenia and I have had a sad life.
I just keep praying and hope things will get better.
I take a lot of Medication and it keeps me out of the suicidal abyss.
I just pray for a strong back to carry my cross.

Prayer, a good physician and the right anti-depression medication. It is a chemical imbalance, not a weakness.

I will keep you in my prayers; depression is a heavy burden.

I’ve struggled with depression for most of my life, so I know how overwhelming the despair can become. Sometimes it can be tempting to think ā€œIf I am a good Christian, then why am I so depressed?ā€, or ā€œShouldn’t my love for God be enough to pull me out of this depression?ā€, etc. Don’t let this line of thinking influence you at all.

Like the others here have said, depression is for the most part a chemical imbalance. It is an illness, not a weakness. And it can be treated with counseling, medication, exercise, etc. I highly recommend that you seek out a good counselor as soon as possible. Also, don’t forget prayer. Sometimes it won’t feel like it’s helping, but trust me, prayer always helps. Try to pray at least once every day even when you don’t feel you have the strength to do so. Allow God to be your Anchor in all of this and know that even if it feels as though He is distant from you He is always with you and will never abandon you.

I will remember you in my prayers today.

I’ve began asking Jesus and Mary to give me ā€œhugsā€ when I am down.

It has helped.

You’re in my prayers too.

First thing is to pray and to ask others to pray for you. We are here for you! Use this site for prayers, advice and comfort when you need it. A lot of people here (including me) have dealt with depression and sad and anxious thoughts.

Talk with someone at your church - the pastor or look at the bulletin for someone who has a ministry for people who may be depressed. They can help you either by talking with them or getting you in touch with a counselor. Most communities have a Catholic Community Services and they provide help for free or a small fee.

More people than you might think or know have used counselors so please don’t think it makes you stigmatized or a weak person, etc if you seek some help.

God please lift up the heart of our friend rockbites and shine your light of joy and hope. In this time, Lord let your purpose and will be done and may we all be open to the workings of your Divine Plan. Amen.

I, too, struggle with depression, so I know how you feel. I agree with what others have said.

Take one day at a time, ask God to get you through that day, and at the end of it look at each part of the day and be thankful for what went right. It is so hard to drag oneself through the day sometimes, I know!

Medication can help, and sometimes it may take some time to find a medication that works for you. When I went off mine for a few months, then realized I needed to go back on, I made a note in my journal (though I only rarely use it) that listed exactly how I was feeling at my worst, and it does help to see that sometimes. It made me realize that God doesn’t want me to live like that!

Lord, give your child strength to face each day, to get whatever help is needed.

I will be praying for you.

Also, there is a book called ā€˜Surviving Depression: A Catholic Approach’ by Kathryn J. Hermes, FSP. I’ve not finished it, but some of it was helpful.

When I struggled with depression, a psychiatrist told me - ā€œthere is light. It’s just impossible to see it when you are stuck in a valley in the earth. We’ll help you get out of that valley so that you can see the light.ā€

Good St. Dymphna, you placed all your hope in Christ’s promises, and sacrificed even your life in that hope. The Lord, God, rewarded your constancy by making your name known and loved over many centuries by the thousands whom you have aided in time of difficulty. Please assist us now in our present necessity, and intercede before God for our intentions. Obtain for us a firm hope like your own in God’s unfailing protection. Amen.

A big thank you, to all who replied. I never realized how many are affected by this terrible illness. I’ve been praying more than ever, and I will pray for all of you as well. This morning’s liturgy struck me and I believe this could be another ā€˜learning moment’, possibly a correction from God. I have been in somewhat of a dark night of the soul and have been searching for the answers as to why so much is happening and why the depression is coming back to the forefront.

I have made an appointment with a new counselor. Hopefully it will go well. In the past, I have had reactions to medications so it is difficult to go back to trying others.

May God bless you.

Today’s reading from Hebrews hit me like a brick dropped from a building on me. God bless you on your way rockbites, and please let us know how it goes with your treatment, medication, etc.
