This is usually my role in my group of friends, and I’m ok with it because I’m not a big drinker. My inquiry is, do you think it’s ok to be the DD, when you know everyone else is gonna get anywhere from drunk to wasted. In other words, are you an accessory to their actions? My first thought is no, b/c people who get drunk often will do it whether or not your with them, so you might as well keep em off the road.

since the thrill of being in an environment where everyone present got wasted evaporated roughly about this month of my freshman year at college, my answer would be why on earth would I be here in the first place, especially if I knew I was going to be hauling drunks around in my car all night. Your friends, your party, your choice, but there are other ways of spending a Saturday night. Is it an extraordinary act of charity to take some drunk’s keys away and drive him home, yes, but as I say, you can choose your friends and you can choose your entertainment.

Yes, I think it’s okay. It’s been years & is still difficult for me to think about (let alone talk or write about) but I’ll share with you & the others here.

When I was in my early 20s, a group of close friends attended the annual 4th of July bash given by the family of one of our other friends. It was a huge party, held at a mountaintop home overlooking the city. We went every year. It was the party to attend.

That afternoon, my folks were having a family barbecue, so my best friend stopped by with her boyfriend & two other buddies. When it was time to leave for the big night time bash, I decided to stay behind. She got into the passenger seat of her boyfriend’s car & waved goodbye.

Later that evening, at the mountaintop party, her boyfriend got drunk. After leaving, he drove (estimated 80+ mph) with the headlights off. His car crashed into a concrete bridge abutment. Life Flight was called. Everyone but my best friend had to be cut out from the wreckage. It was determined that she had been killed instantly. Her boyfriend survived, with a shattered arm (13 places) & wired jaw. The girl in the back seat lived, but her ear was cut off & leg crushed. Her date became a quadriplegic.
In other words, are you an accessory to their actions?
I’m glad you’re thinking about this now. I didn’t back then. There wasn’t so much “awareness”. People didn’t really talk about these issues. No such thing as a DD. And even if there were, my friends & I, well… we sort of felt invincible. Would have figured it could never happen to us.

When I think back on that night, the days, weeks & months of indescribable sadness that followed, I often wonder~
What if I had not decided to stay behind?

Maybe, instead of her boyfriend, I would have been able to drive. She would have lived. None of them would have been hurt.

Or maybe (as was often the case) I would have shared the front seat with her. My boyfriend would have been in the back seat, with the other two.

I lived. My beautiful best friend died.I will always love her & will never forget her.

Indeed… but please be careful, and as annie said, choose wisely. That’s all I can say.

If you don’t drive them, they will be driving theselves drunk and therefore when one of them gets in an accident and kills someone, think of how much more guilty you’ll feel that you could have stopped it. So ya, do be the designated driver. Just make sure they don’t drink while you are driving or have open containers or basically get you in trouble. Also, make sure everyone is over 21.

I have to agree with this as well.

And as long as they’re not negatively influencing you, I think you’re okay being friends with them.
