Look, I’m going to make this short and sweet.

I want to convert to Catholicism, but I’m not entirely convinced that the doctrine is sound. Will anyone help me?

I am not sure what you mean by “Marian doctrine” but I’m assuming it has to do with Mary’s perpetual virginity as well as all that other stuff that most Protestants don’t talk about. I believe in that stuff too.

As for Apostolic Succession not being taught in the early Church? What about all the Pope’s? Did they suddenly disappear after Luther and the Moravians? No, I’m afraid that history is quite clear. There has always been a successor to the Apostle Peter.

I’m not so clear on a few other things, but I will post on that later.
 
Think of Mary as your personal guide who walks with you and shows you in a very personal way all the important events in the life of Jesus. As you meditate on the events you come to know more about Jesus therefore nurturing the relationship. Mary is not an obstacle in your faith journey she helps you. Mary is given honor for her role and in no way diminishes from Jesus/GOD. A lot of duck hunters have a guide to bring them to where the ducks can be found. The guide has experience, knows the surroundings, knows where to find the ducks…etc…
Hopefully you have enough info from all the postings to come to understand better.

I am a regular reader of a site run by Brother Igantius Mary, who was a Baptist minister before he converted to Catholicism. He writes about the very thing you’re asking about. Maybe his thoughts will be of some help to you.

Not one human here or anywhere can give you faith or the love of truth that will make you open to whatever God wants to reveal to you. But he may use people as tools to move you along.
Perhaps you have that faith already.
If you do, then a patient look at the earliest Christians and their writings will, over time, reveal something to you about Catholic doctrine. A piece here and a piece there of Catholic doctrine will seem to fit what early Christians proclaimed, though a non-Catholic today will have a plausible argument why it doesn’t.
Then another piece, and then another.
Soon you have a thousand-piece puzzle, all of it fitting nicely. Though protesters claim that each piece’s validity is misinterpretation, a coincidence, a mirage, the reality of a perfectly assembled puzzle cannot be denied.
 
It doesn’t matter anyway…

I’ve been pushed so far away from joining the Church.
 
I’m not calling you dumb, but there is this great book by an EWTN priest called “Catholicism For Dummies” (spelling?) Also watch “The Journey Home” on EWTN. If you don’t catch EWTN you can go to the website www.ewtn.com and click on Religious Catalouge. Hope this helps!

I came here for answers, but everytime I tried to talk about Protestants and their beliefs some self-righteous Catholic had to come into the thread and berate us Protestants.

As for actual reasons for not converting… I have a serious problem with the line of thinking that somehow people can’t be filled with the Holy Spirit and… oh darn, I have to go, I’ll edit this later.

You do understand this is a Catholic forum don’t you? If you were to go to a protestent forum website you might here what you want, but here we talk about Catholicism. And one more thing, I don’t think our protestent brothers and sisters are as tolerant as we Catholics are, just my experience. God bless you and I hope you find your way home where ever that may be. :tiphat:

I’m sorry if some Catholics here were rude or dismissive about Protestant theology; they should have been more charitable. Please, give them your forgiveness and don’t take their example as the true face of the Catholic faith.

I’m not sure what line of thinking you’re referencing; I’ve never met a Catholic who claimed that people could not be filled with the Holy Spirit. It’s Catholics who have a deep and rich Sacramental theology; it’s all about the work of the Holy Spirit!

There are certain mysteries in Catholic Church teachings that would seem to defy human nature as we know it, the Marian Doctrine being a good case in point. Having trouble believing, accepting, coming to terms with it? Well, I don’t know the exact quote in various Bibles but remember the story of St. Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples who refused to believe that Our Lord had risen from the dead? Our Lord came to Thomas, instructing him to put his hands into Our Lord’s Wounds. To which Thomas said, “My Lord and My God”.

And Jesus answered:
"You believe because you can see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe."

And, so it goes. There are things we don’t see or understand about our Faith - things that defy human explanation such as the Immaculate Conception, the Virgin Birth, etc. Perhaps the though of being “filled with the Holy Spirit” might actually be easier to take. (Don’t you believe you’re filled with sanctifying grace after Holy Communion? Do you question that? Something we don’t see but believe.) But taking Our Lord’s (God’s) Word for it (THE Word) - we, as Catholics, believe. It may be difficult to understand - but we accept - and we believe.

And that’s what makes us who we are as Catholics.
