Is lying about destroying a item you did not mean to destroy a mortal sin?

Lying is a sin in a fundamental sense, regardless of the situation.

You need to speak to your confessor. You can’t keep making new accounts to ask us these questions when we can’t tell you one way or the other how culpable you are.

Lying is a sin. Always. Your culpability may change. Speak to your priest.

How can you tell this is happening?
They had a previous account of a similar name which was suspended just a few hours ago (JCServant011).

Hehe, well, at least he/she isn’t being deceptive about it. 😉 I’m looking forward to JCServant013! Next thing you know the mods will need regular expressions to ban people. (That’s an insider joke for the nerds on here.)

It may not be. It really depends on the circumstances. You lied about it even though it was accidental. Who did you lie to? The owner of the item? If so, is this because you have good reason (e.g. based on experience) to expect the owner of the item to be unreasonably angry and unforgiving? If so, your lie wasn’t a mortal sin, but you should still confess it. If the circumstances were different from what I just guessed, it’s not possible to say (without you giving further information) whether it was a mortal sin or not.

P.S. Generally speaking one of the three requirements for an act to constitute a mortal sin is that it would have to concern a grave matter. So whether or not your lying was a mortal sin might also depend on what you destroyed.

There was another one who kept (slightly)changing names, mostly on the Catholic living forums. People really shouldn’t do this!

Yes, it’s an anonymous site, with several forums. It just isn’t right to let people change nyms, and continue an I wanted subject. Or, a subject that they wanted to hear the ‘right’ answers to. One was a woman who was told many times to leave her abusive fiancée. No one would tell her to stay with him…or that she could ‘change’ him. The best answer to most serious situations is usually the same…see your priest! If he can’t help, chances are that he could direct the poster to the right kind of professional. And, questions about sin are always best answered by a priest. Much better than an anonymous forum, for sure!

But, to everyone, from those who need to keep asking, those who feel the need to help them, and those who see the truth, but can’t be positive about calling someone out…I do feel for you. God Bless!

The Elves weren’t as smart as everyone thought :man_shrugging:t2:

How expensive was this item?
Did your lie cause someone else to get into serious trouble?

That ring was pretty expensive, but better to chuck it than go the way of Gollum…my precious.

The Eagles aren’t much of a threat this year. They’re essentially mediocre. I’m not sure they’re even going to make the payoffs.

So I wouldn’t worry about the Eagles and their super bowl rings.

What about if you are hiding Jews and the Nazi at the door asks if you are hiding any Jews?

Either say there are no Unterschmieken, since there is no such thing, or invite them to search. The house is likely going to be searched.
