We cannot go extinct.
We have souls that are immortal.
We continue on.

So with the creation of the first human, the species is set forever.

I agree that the species is set forever in that each of us has an immortal soul, but we could ruin our species with very little trouble at all. The thing that keeps us from doing ourselves in is God’s grace. He’s stepped in every time we’ve been on the brink of utter destruction. He didn’t do that for the dinosaurs, but then they weren’t sentient beings created in his image, were they?
