Detroit Catholic Leaders Urge Gay Marriage Supporters to Skip Communion

This article reports that Detroit’s Archbishop Vigneron has said that for a Catholic to receive communion and still deny the revelation Christ entrusted to the Church by supporting gay marriage is to do two contradictory things at once. This sort of behavior should “bring shame for a double-dealing that is not unlike perjury.” He says the Church wants Catholics to “avoid this personal disaster.” This major Detroit daily newspaper surprisingly provides this Catholic perspective very frankly, and in fact identifies U.S. political leaders who have had problems in this regards. About 30 other bishops, this article also reports, have said that pro-choice or pro-gay-marriage Catholics should not go to communion.

Both these men make me very proud to be a Catholic in Detroit 👍
 
Anybody know where I can find out the names of those 30 Bishops who have said pro gay marriage or pro choice Catholics should not present themselves for Communion?
 
Good for them, make the dissenters aware that there is a problem, maybe they’ll do the intelligent thing and learn about the Church’s teaching, rather than just dismissing it.
 
It is time for the leadership of the Church to do just what this Archbishop has done, translate the intent of the catechism for the members who don’t seem to understand. Now it is very clear for anyone who has read this or the news in Detroit that their personal feelings take a back seat to the Church’s teachings. Reconcile your conscience or do not sin further by taking communion. There are many areas in the Church that need this same, clear treatment and I hope that this type of approach will continue.

Why, does the true teaching of the Church make you sad?

Commentors are simply happy that leadership is teaching the laity properly and not ignoring an issue for PC reasons.

I think they probably mean the comments under the article itself on freep.com rather than those here on CAF

No. I am talking about the comments below the actual article. They ignore the true teachings of the Church. One said he was going to take communion anyway, and would proudly wave his rainbow flag while doing it.
 
Oh, my sincere apologies RollTide!

I have lately made it a habit to not scroll down to view comments on articles online. They too make me sad. It’s a place for trolls to bash anything religious.

WOW! I just amazes me that there are “Catholics” out there who are so disobedient to the Church. The false entitlement and “it’s my right” mentality of many people today is one of the key issues today.

People need to understand that they don’t get to meet God as an equal partner where they can dictate terms to Him. We need to be better trained that the way to Truth is to humbly submit our human desires to the will of God.

No one said it would be easy but it has a pretty decent return on investment! 😉

They also need to encourage them to attend confession.

I have had Catholics who attend Mass regularly tell me that they support Homosexual “marriage” and women priests.

Drives me crazy.

Some additional commentary on the situation.

In today’s climate, for Bishops to boldly take a stand like this is a big deal, and I am highly encouraged to see it. My heartfelt prayers go out to those Bishops who are showing resolve and leadership on this issue.

Perhaps this will embolden more priests to preach on this in their homilies, and give some cover to those Catholic politicians who are weakening in their convictions due to political pressures.
 
I’m sensing a possible shift here with our bishops. Maybe I’m crazy or way too optimistic, but I get the strong feeling that it’s not only the laity here on CAF who are at their wits’ end over this. With any luck and a lot of prayer I hope to see Pope Francis take action on this issue…especially with regards to politicians.
