Detroit's Tridentine Mass

Clarifying the above post, there will be a meeting of the St. Josaphat Tridentine Community after the 9:30 AM Mass on July 1 to discuss expanded permissions recently granted by Cardinal Maida.

Also, our long-awaited Gregorian Chant Workshop will be held on Saturday, June 30 from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM in the St. Josaphat Parish Hall. Cost is $40 and lunch will be provided. Please PM me or call the parish if you would like to register. Everyone is welcome, whether or not you attend the Latin Mass or the cluster.

While I’m rambling, it’s worth mentioning that Assumption Church has turned out to be just as splendid a location for the TLM as anticipated. Every TLM fan in metro Detroit should try to make it over to Windsor at least once to see this magnificent church.

I was unable to attend the town hall meeting yesterday. Could someone give us an review? Any important news? Any daily Masses in the future?
 
Quick review of the Town Hall Meeting:

We received permission from the Archdiocese for Tridentine form Baptisms, Confessions, Weddings, and Funerals. Anyone who wants one can have it now. Confessions will start relatively soon, once Fr. Mark learns the rite.

We also have permission for Daily Mass, so we discussed what the most convenient time for everyone would be. It was decided to start with a Monday evening Mass, beginning at 6:00, 6:30, or 7:00 PM, yet to be determined. More details when they get worked out.

A variety of Parish Life issues were discussed, including Catechism, a Homeschoolers’ Group, a book sale table, and better integration with the Novus Ordo community’s monthly fundraising lunches. We need volunteers to run the proposed new programs.

Essentially the tables have turned, in that St. Josaphat was formerly dependent on the Archdiocese for permissions. Now that permissions are no longer the obstacle, the parish is more dependent on the interest level of its members.

All in all, these are the challenges of healthy growth.
 
Assumption Grotto has a N.O. Latin mass that is as close to the TLM that we can.

After we are allowed, I will promise you Assumption Grotto will have TLM masses.

Honestly, that’s one of the reasons that I really am not a fan of this Motu Proprio, because this indult has breathed new life into a parish that probably would have been closed. Now a good portion of people will move from St. Josephat’s to Grotto, which is a parish that is already financially healthy. On a more personal level, I feel people at St. Josephat’s genuinely like the TLM and are attending because it makes them close to God, and they do what they do for the right reasons. When I go to Grotto, all it really is is self-righteousness and holier-than-thou-ness. I’d much rather have the TLM at Josephat’s than Grotto. 😦 Hopefully the Tridentine community will stay at St. Josephat’s and they will continue to grow.
 
I am not all about getting into who is more self-righteous and holier-than-thou. I have been attending Grotto for the last year and a half and yes at first the parishoners came across that way. I have found the latin mass to be more spritual personally. I never knew of the TLM until going to Grotto (meet my fiance who was going there)

Grotto has a much more stricter stance on living a Catholic and I have come to grasp that and have learn of the members there after joining the latin chior there.

I don’t consider myself more righteous than anyone else, however I am proud of my parish.

Enough with this Grotto vs. St. Josaphat. We are all Catholics in the Archdiocese of Detroit. We are all Christians! We are not little kids competing for who has a better quality Mass or who has a better music program. The whole point to having these Masses is to offer glory to God and to grow in holiness.

We must throw aside the pride and look on growing in holiness. We must love as Christ told us to.

**No more stuff on this thread that shows competition between any church in the Archdiocese becasue of the Motu Proprio. :hug3: **

St. Josaphat’s TLM made the front page of this week’s Michigan Catholic, along with a large photo. And there is a section about the Motu Proprio (temporarily) on the home page of the Archdiocese of Detroit.

I never thought I’d see the day when multiple articles in one edition of the diocesan newspaper pertain to the TLM.
 
There is a beautiful TLM church, St.Annes in Redford, Michigan, and St.Josephs in Armada.The most beautiful High and Low Mass you can attend,
St.Annes is on the corner of Joy road, and Hazelton street, in Redford. I hope the Detroit Archdioces opens up hundreds of TLM churches.:highprayer:

Those are unapproved places to go to. They are places that are not authorized by the Archdiocese. One should not attend Mass at these two churches as they are not approved. No one should attend Mass at either of these churches because Adam Cardinal Maida does not approve them.

Don’t anyone dare to start a debate in here. Go start it elswhere.

Cardinal Maida’s article seemed very postitive as well.

I was also encouraged that Fr. Ben is looking at starting up a TLM at our parish ( SS C&M). What’s kinda’ neet is that we have an ‘honest to goodness’ ordained Sub-Deacon at our parish ( a Chaldean). I wonder if he’ll be interested in assisting 🙂
 
Alex, how much training do the priests get before they say Mass at St. Josaphat? How long does it take if a priest has no experience with the TLM?
 
Between one and three two-hour training sessions, incorporating “dry Mass” runthroughs, have been sufficient for all of our celebrants so far. None have had trouble learning the rubrics; a few have stumbled with the Latin pronounciation.

During a priest’s first few Masses, it is beneficial for him to have an MC at his side to answer questions and provide guidance. If a priest intends to go it alone, that is start saying TLMs without an MC, he will likely need more extensive training up front. And there is a danger that bad habits can be formed.

Our organist also takes extra care with a new celebrant, for example by playing organ accompaniment to help him sing the Preface.

Part of our mission is to attract priests to the TLM, therefore our philosophy has been to make it easy and appealing for our celebrants, and not to intimidate them. We’re happy to provide training for any area priests who wish to learn the Tridentine Mass. After the initial training, they are welcome to gain experience celebrating the TLM in Windsor at Assumption right now, and after September 14 if not sooner, they are welcome to celebrate at St. Josaphat, too.

I was reading in our church bullentin last week that after the letter from Cardinal Maida my parish is going to consider having the TLM. It said it was based on how many people in the parish would want it or be willing to participate. I was so excited to read the news I hope that it will happen that way I will be able to attend every week!! :extrahappy:

Which Detroit parishes will be the first to join St. Josaphat in offering the extraordinary form of the Mass? I would guess Assumption Grotto, Holy Family, SS C&M. Who else?
 
I was listening to catholic radio yesterday and I heard an ad for the Latin mass at Holy Family parish. They were telling people to “come home to the Latin mass” I hope that it spreads through out the diocese.
