Around the beginning of the year I read something about some restoration work to be done on the sanctuary at St. Josaphat. Does anybody have any info on this?

Diane - you take the most wonderful photos that show the beauty of our Faith.

I just said to my husband that we are so very blessed to belong to such a wonderful parish.

Thank you so much for being such a wonderful archivist (is that a word?) of our parish life. In another 175 years I’m sure your photos will be hanging in the gym for the next celebration! 🙂

There will be a Corpus Christi procession at St. Josaphat this Sunday after the 9:30 AM Mass.

There will also be an outdoor procession at Assumption-Windsor after the 2:00 PM TLM.

At the monthly 4th Sunday noon TLM at our cluster parish St. Joseph, there will be a guest celebrant, Fr. Joseph Skelton. Fr. Skelton will be a frequent celebrant at the St. Josaphat TLM over the next few months as well.

When will we have an early Sunday morning Low Mass scheduled in Detroit? It would be nice to have that option for people who need to go to Mass early.

Ss. Cyril and Methodius has a 6:00pm Vigil Mass on Saturdays, would that help?

I got a call today from Miles Christi that they will be having a Day of Recollection on Sunday with Mass and Corpus Christi procession. We will be at Grotto for the day, but thought others might like to know of options in that part of town.

Well, this thread needs some revival. If there is anything someone wants to contribute please feel free.

By the way, that Tridentine Wedding at St. Josaphat was just magnificent.

No problem!

As CathMass pointed out above, St. Josaphat had its first Tridentine wedding at St. Josaphat on June 7. A full orchestra and choir filled the choir loft, playing Mozart’s Spatzenmesse. A similar Tridentine orchestra Mass wedding is scheduled for Assumption-Windsor in November.

This Wednesday, June 18, at 7:00 PM, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - Wyandotte will hold its first weekly Tridentine Mass. If there is sufficient interest, a Sunday Mass might be scheduled.

On Sunday, June 29, at noon, St. Albertus is holding is second Tridentine Mass. The long-broken organ is being repaired, with the intent that it make its debut at this Mass. The altar and sanctuary in this church are something to behold.

Sacred Heart Church, Yale (west of Port Huron, and clustered with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - Emmett) now holds a weekly Tuesday 9:00 AM Tridentine Mass. For those who are counting, this puts the number of TLM sites in the Archdiocese of Detroit at nine. That probably puts us second only to the Archdiocese of Chicago, which has eleven.

For anyone in metro Detroit wanting to catch a daily Tridentine before work, Assumption Grotto has added, on an experimental basis, a daily 6:30am Tridentine.

Pass word along to other communities in metro Detroit for this daily opportunity. It’s ongoing status is dependent on participation. Please pray for it’s success and come if you can.

[See my post at Te Deum Laudamus!](6:30am Daily Tridentine added to Grotto’s Schedule (experimental basis))

Would that we had a daily EF Mass on the west side! Anyone know of any developments of this kind on the Western Front?

I first began attending the TLM at St.Josaphat’s. How I miss it! The church was so magnificently beautiful and the whole Mass was absolutely awe-inspiring. And I cannot say enough good about the schola!

Sadly, I am often inclined to think of St. Josaphat’s when I attend my current TLM, since they very, very rarely offer a High Mass. 😦

**Devotions in Honor of St. Philomena will be held after the 9:30 AM Tridentine Mass at **
St. Josaphat this Sunday.

This year’s devotion is being held on the actual date (August 10) that is believed by many to be the date of St. Philomena’s martyrdom. Around the 19th Century the feast was originally celebrated on this date but, the Church moved it to August 11 out of respect for St. Lawrence. *St. Philomena has been known for the many favors received through her intercession. *

So you are all invited to come for the regular 9:30 AM Sunday Tridentine Mass which will be followed by the devotions with veneration of the first class relic.

Are there still any Latin Novus Ordo Masses in Detroit, or have all of the Latin NOM’s there been shifted to the Extraordinary Form?

I was talking a couple of weeks ago with Fr. Joseph Skelton (he is now back in the Philippines) and he remarked that the TLM communities in Detroit had such good and inspiring sacred music that he sometimes wept at the altar when offering Mass.

Seems that Detroit is fast developing into one of the centers of the Extraordinary Form! Nine locations for the EF! Amazing!

Can anyone here list all nine locations?

Carlos:

Fr. Skelton and I were talking about you. Glad to hear he reported back.

We actually have 10 EF sites, if you include our neighbor diocese. In order of when they debuted:
  1. Assumption Church, Windsor - debuted (in a different location) in 1991. Has a full professional choir every Sunday, with the occasional orchestra Mass. This is the Diocese of London, Ontario, Canada, not the Archdiocese of Detroit. Windsor is located next to Detroit, on the other side of a river.
  2. St. Josaphat, Detroit - debuted October 3, 2004. Has had a volunteer choir every Sunday since the start, with the occasional orchestra Mass. A professional choir starts September 7.
  3. Assumption Grotto, Detroit - debuted “9/14” (we all know what that means). Volunteer choir with the occasional orchestra Mass.
  4. St. Joseph, Detroit - debuted October, 2008, fourth Sunday of the month. Has a volunteer choir, with the occasional orchestra Mass.
  5. St. Stephen, New Boston - debuted shortly after 9/14. They have a single cantor every Sunday, AFAIK.
  6. St. Albertus, Detroit - debuted February, 2008. Mass is held two to four times per year, using a joint Assumption-Windsor/St. Josaphat choir.
  7. Sacred Heart, Yale - debuted June 2008, AFAIK. Tuesday Low Mass
  8. Sweetest Heart of Mary, Detroit - debuted May, 2008. Mass will be held two to four times per year, using a joint Assumption-Windsor/St. Josaphat choir
  9. Ss. Cyril & Methodius, Sterling Heights - debuted March, 2008, AFAIK. Volunteer choir every Saturday evening
  10. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wyandotte - debuted June, 2008. Low Mass with Hymns one Wednesday per month
The same music director heads up #s 1, 2, 6, 8, and 10, and helps out at #4. Fr. Skelton celebrated Mass at St. Josaphat, St. Joseph, and Assumption-Windsor. He is a great priest and a master of the Extraordinary Form. We wish he would visit more often.

A few more locations are in the planning stages for additional TLMs. Incidentally, Chicago as 11 TLM sites, and I believe New York has 10 now, so Detroit has some friendly competition.
