When are we going to get a TLM on the west side? I have to drive at least 40 minutes to get to a diocese-approved Mass!

Hi,

I’m in town here, and would like to attend a Tridentine Mass here. My father is familiar with the church Sweetest Heart of Mary so it is likely we will attend. I would definitely love to go to St Joeaphat, but I must drive back to TN Sunday morning and I believe St Joesaphat they don’t offer a Saturday Mass.

Alex,

Interesting list.

I wonder if Miles Christi is going to be offering in the Extraordinary Form. They are on the west side, are they not?

Has there been interest in any local religious orders? Mary, Mother of the Eucharist Dominicans?

Depending on how far west you mean, there’s going to be one starting in Ann Arbor soon.

Just an update on a recent post I made in this thread (probably the previous page) about Assumption Grotto’s daily “Tridentine”.

The 8:30am Mass was sparsely populated so it was dropped. Assumption Grotto added a 6:30am “Tridentine” Low Mass which ends about 7:05/7:10.

I’ve been going to this with only a few exceptions, such as when I need to be at work at 6:00/6:30. At first the numbers were swinging from 10 to 12 down t 5 or 6. Then, I put flyers out and notified a few people that a “working class Mass” was added at that timeslot and more people came. We now seem to have a steady 12-15. It varies by day, especially on Friday when some people like coming to the evening Mass following adoration, which runs daily in the convent chapel from 9:00 until 6:30pm (with Benediction).

I was hoping that we could get word out among other Detroit area people about this working class Mass at 6:30. It is really wonderful to have this option before work. I’m there about 5:50 to get those things obligatory for secular Carmelites. The sacristan is there earlier than that.

Get word out about this because it’s continuing availability will depend on people in the pews. I think if we get it up closer to 20 or more, it will be a keeper. Even at 12-15, the priest handling it feels it is worth it.

Carlos:

Fr. Skelton and I were talking about you. Glad to hear he reported back.

We actually have 10 EF sites, if you include our neighbor diocese. In order of when they debuted:
  1. Assumption Church, Windsor - debuted (in a different location) in 1991. Has a full professional choir every Sunday, with the occasional orchestra Mass. This is the Diocese of London, Ontario, Canada, not the Archdiocese of Detroit. Windsor is located next to Detroit, on the other side of a river.
  2. St. Josaphat, Detroit - debuted October 3, 2004. Has had a volunteer choir every Sunday since the start, with the occasional orchestra Mass. A professional choir starts September 7.
  3. Assumption Grotto, Detroit - debuted “9/14” (we all know what that means). Volunteer choir with the occasional orchestra Mass.
  4. St. Joseph, Detroit - debuted October, 2008, fourth Sunday of the month. Has a volunteer choir, with the occasional orchestra Mass.
  5. St. Stephen, New Boston - debuted shortly after 9/14. They have a single cantor every Sunday, AFAIK.
  6. St. Albertus, Detroit - debuted February, 2008. Mass is held two to four times per year, using a joint Assumption-Windsor/St. Josaphat choir.
  7. Sacred Heart, Yale - debuted June 2008, AFAIK. Tuesday Low Mass
  8. Sweetest Heart of Mary, Detroit - debuted May, 2008. Mass will be held two to four times per year, using a joint Assumption-Windsor/St. Josaphat choir
  9. Ss. Cyril & Methodius, Sterling Heights - debuted March, 2008, AFAIK. Volunteer choir every Saturday evening
  10. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wyandotte - debuted June, 2008. Low Mass with Hymns one Wednesday per month
The same music director heads up #s 1, 2, 6, 8, and 10, and helps out at #4. Fr. Skelton celebrated Mass at St. Josaphat, St. Joseph, and Assumption-Windsor. He is a great priest and a master of the Extraordinary Form. We wish he would visit more often.

A few more locations are in the planning stages for additional TLMs. Incidentally, Chicago as 11 TLM sites, and I believe New York has 10 now, so Detroit has some friendly competition.
A lot of debutantes you have there! Too bad, there can be no dancing in their places! 😃

Yes, he did tell me that the two of you had a chat and I got mentioned. He also showed me a video clip of a trio singing the most marvellous polyphony during a TLM, and filling the vast church with their singing. I wonder where that was?

Carlos:

That recording was made at Assumption Church-Windsor. The Mass he celebrated was recorded on DVD (which he has), and afterwards he made his own recording of the choir up in the loft. Ask him to see both if you haven’t already.

On Sunday, November 23 at 2:00 PM, Fr. Josef Bisig will celebrate a Solemn High Mass at Assumption Church in Windsor to commemorate the 17th Anniversary of the Tridentine Mass in Windsor. The Deacon will be Deacon Richard Bloomfield, and the Subdeacon will be Fr. Peter Hrytsyk.

Fr. Bisig is the co-founder and former Superior of the FSSP, and is presently the rector of Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, Nebraska.

Schubert’s Mass in G will be performed by an orchestra and choir under the direction of Wassim Sarweh. A reception for Fr. Bisig will follow in the Parish Hall.

Assumption is located next to the Ambassador Bridge, on the east side.

Is the 6:30am Tridentine Low Mass still going on at Assumpton Grotto during the week? I might be able to make it once in awhile.

I go to Ss. Cyril and Methodius at 6pm on Saturdays and sometimes I need a fix during the week. I think a Low Mass before work would be wonderful.

I do not think the website has been updated. I called the church and they did not seem to know. I have heard through the grapevine that they have a 6:30am Low Mass and a 7:30am NO mass during the week.

Before I drive down there I would like to know. I guess I will have to put in a call to Fr. Perrone.
Oh - that could be actually, I forgot that the webmaster dude has been on vacation for awhile and has not been making updates. :o

Are there still any Latin Novus Ordo Masses in Detroit, or have all of the Latin NOM’s there been shifted to the Extraordinary Form?
My parish, Old St. Mary’s in Greektown, has the Latin Novus Ordo on Sundays at 10 AM.

It was hard to believe, but three media outlets sent reporters to cover Fr. Josef Bisig’s Solemn High Mass at Assumption on Nov. 23:

CBC Radio (1550 AM) sent a reporter who interviewed people and recorded the Kyrie and Gloria of Schubert’s Mass in G. The story ran and was discussed with callers Monday morning between 7:30 - 8:15 AM.

The Windsor Star sent a reporter and photographer. Their story ran on page 3 of Monday’s edition and was posted on-line here.

A TV station sent cameras. In all the commotion, it wasn’t clear which station it was.

Not that long ago, it would have been unimaginable that the TLM could attract such attention from the secular media. An encouraging sign of the times.

Five news items to report:

There will be a special Solemn High Tridentine Mass at the National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak this Wednesday, March 18, at 7:00 PM. This will be an historic event for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that Shrine is one of the largest parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit in terms of number of registered parishioners.

There will be a sung Tridentine Mass at St. Joseph Church at 7:00 PM this Thursday, March 19 for the Feast of St. Joseph.

Tridentine Vespers will be sung at Sweetest Heart of Mary Church next Saturday, March 21 at 4:00 PM, as part of the parish’s Forty Hours Devotion.

St. Josaphat Church’s Tridentine Mass received front page coverage on the Detroit News on Friday, March 13. I’m not sure how long this link will work, but the story itself is here. Be sure to click on the photos and the video on the right side of the page.

There is a new web site for the Tridentine Mass Community at Assumption Church, Windsor. The site includes downloadable Chant Sheets for use by the celebrant at the altar, as well as Propers Handouts and an archive of the weekly Tridentine Community News that is also distributed at St. Josaphat, St. Joseph, and Sweetest Heart of Mary. Recordings of our choir are also posted.

I may go since that is only about 15 minutes from me. It should be interesting.

For those who to not know, the church is set up in a circle with the sanctuary in the middle surrounded by a circular altar rail. It is not a new church since it was built in the first part of the 20th century.

Do you know who is going to celebrate.

Just got back from the High Mass at Shrine Of The Little Flower. Absolutely Amazing!
I had tears in my eyes.

Oh gosh, I was crying!! :o It truly was one of the most beautiful Masses I have ever seen. I’m sure I saw that altar smiling last night. 😉

I always wondered how the Tridentine Mass would work in the round architecture, even though the Church was built pre-Vatican II. But it was so lovely, and would have only been better if the original tabernacle was still on the altar (it has been moved to the adoration chapel).

And the combined choirs were truly surreal and the most beautiful I have ever heard anywhere.

So very glad I went!!

I do have a couple of criticisms, but I’ll leave those out. On the whole it was truly wonderful.
