The devil can only work in your life if you allow it.

The simple answer is stop allowing it.

Don’t dialogue with the devil and ignore all of it.

@Mary67 , you are actually now doing more that many “practising” Catholics do , so don’t get too down . Keep on doing what you are doing .

Before giving the devil the credit for things that happen in your life maybe a process of discernment is needed . A spiritual adviser or a priest in Confession should be able to help .

I know you say that you did things in a kind and gentle way , but is there any possibility that your friends and family thought you were a bit over-the-top which they found off-putting ?

I see what you are saying but one thing that comes to my mind is when Pope John Paul II forgave his shooter. He said that he didn’t ultimately blame the man but rather Satan for leading the man to sin. So, I think everything in our life is a battle between good and evil. Does that make sense?
nice observation, but still Pope John Paul II ,forgave him, because,he was in grace a saint! ,how many of us can do it we see people and not satan.inspite of knowing it you feel you forgave but not yet, Jesus said it from the cross in Luke 23:34 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” … , from your post it is clear you have not forgiven completely from your heart, you still have anger,we humans cannot forgive by ourselves as it is said to ‘err is human to forgive is Divine’ unless we pray for the grace,we cannot,so do, earnestly pray for it.

your saying your point of view, we accept it ,but what about your parents side ,have hurt them in words and action, ask Jesus before gthye blessed sacrement gto reveal it to you, make an act of contrition and a true exmination of conscience

I’m just going to spell it out because I don’t think I have been clear enough. My parents were abusive. I didn’t deserve their abuse.

I have been exceedingly forgiving and yet they still ice me out. I have pain, yes. But, I do not have anger because I have hope in Christ.

I have hope that they will one day see how much their abuse injured me physically, emotionally and spiritually.

And, I have hope because Christ is more powerful than the lies Satan sows in people’s hearts.

I have forgiven them completely, but visiting them is not what God wills for my life right now since that would open my husband and myself up to more of their abuse.

On a spiritual level, there are times when our spirit clash’s with another persons spirit. Especially when the other human spirit recognizes our own spirit as belonging to God and revolts outwardly causing a harsh reaction towards us. Ie verbal abuse etc.

The worst often occurs after receiving the Body and Blood of Christ or when we are in a State of Grace. Satan does like to divide and conquer, he likes to send grief and thrives with conflict.

Where Satan is full of envy, greed, and hatred—God is holy, just, and righteous.

what do you mean by spirit? It’s my first time to hear of spirit of one clashing with the spirit of another.

Does this mean that like in the case of someone who is in a state of grace, the person who isn’t is mad, and wants the former to also be in a state of mortal sin?

Theoretically: spirit meaning the soul of man.

No. When the other human spirit recognizes our own spirit as belonging to God and revolts outwardly causing a harsh reaction towards us. Ie verbal abuse etc. Often our own spirit recognizes where the harsh reaction is coming from.

. I’m particularly interested in learning more about the “behind the scenes”, so to speak, of the spiritual life.
For more traditional readings, St Ignatius Loyola speaks a lot about discernment and this includes the discernment of spirits. St Francis de Sales’ book “Introduction to the Spiritual Life” speaks about building deeper devotion to God as well as resisting the Enemy. I liked it a lot.

C.S. Lewis was an Anglican but his book “Screwtape Letters” is easy to read and probably a good starting point. I read it and I didn’t find anything in it that was contrary to Catholic teaching and I know tons of Catholic priests/religious/theologians have read it. It is written in a satirical and fictional format and talks about the various temptations and problems in life through the voice of a demonic tempter.

My last and strongest recommendation is “St Antony of the Desert”, written by St Athanasius. It is the short biography of St Antony. It’s over 1500 years old and it should be easy to get a digital copy for free.

Also, taking up a reading interest in human psychology will help you better navigate the human motivations for why people do what they do. As human beings, we tend to think tribally just like our ancestors did, so placing ideals and virtues over blood loyalty can easily get you into trouble with people.

Peace.

Well it is interesting to read the “wisdom” of others being presented .
As James. 1;4 Said. If you lack wisdom ask God who gives liberally.
Reflections of one’s life experience do reveals our wisdom
