Devils lurk in hotel rooms

I had heard this before but it’s sobering and interesting all at the same time. It was printed in the Sunday bulletin of the FSSP in Kansas City this past Sunday (latin-mass.org/spd/bulletins)).

If you stay in a hotel room, unless you are literally the first guests, you can be morally certain that there have been serious sins committed in that room. This means that you can be morally certain that there are devils lurking about that room. Yes, you read that correctly: you can be morally certain that there are devils in that room. But no worries! Take a towel and cover the television… (and leave it covered!) Then take blessed salt and drop a little pinch in each corner of the room and flick a tiny amount across the room, and then sprinkle a little holy water around.

In case you’re wondering: any priest can bless salt and the blessing placed on the salt carries a powerful exorcism that repels demons (it’s on par with holy water or a blessed Saint Benedict medal). It’s a good idea to have blessed salt, blessed olive oil (also carries a powerful exorcism), and holy water in your home at all times.

No offense to the original poster but that’s a highly superstitious admonition, and superstition has no place in the Catholic church (in my humble opinion).

The devil doesn’t lurk in rooms - he lurks in our minds and hearts, tempting us to evil acts and thoughts.

Salt or olive oil certainly won’t ward off the devil, whether it’s blessed or not.

Don’t cover the TV - the devil won’t jump out at you nor will he cause a porno movie to suddenly appear.

Whatever you do, don’t allow yourself to be tempted to order a porno movie (probably a low chance anyone in this forum would order one anyway). And don’t believe that false superstitions will ward off those temptations.

I was once told, and agree, that the Our Father …deliver us from evil . . .] and the St Michael prayer are both effective exorcisms.

Adding a bit of holy water or blessed salt seems a good idea. We once ended up doing a retreat weekend in a facility belonging to some Hollywood eastern religion group. The priest working with us assured us he had plenty of holy water, and he gave the place a thorough blessing.👍

Nonsense like that asks for a question such as, “How do we know that invisible vampires don’t haunt hotel rooms ?” There’s no way of testing for their presence - but to say that sort of thing could be a very effective way to ruin business. Still, claiming that rooms are haunted by invisible Democrats could keep some of the red-neck Bushites away 🙂​

As to the porn - no one is holding guns to the heads of those who don’t want porn; so they are perfectly free not to turn on the box in the first place. ##
 
Sacramentals do help to ward off evil spirits…however, as others have said, some of that seemed a little superstitious.

Sacramental have the intercession of the church. They need to be used with faith. Same with blessed salt.

Yeah…I was just saying that it seemed as if the orders were a little wierd…sprinkling salt in the corners of the room, etc…

Just wear a scapular, bless yourself with Holy Water, and sleep with a rosary in your hand! 😃

Sprinkling salt in the corners of the room is an old practice of the Church. Done with prayers and faith it is used to deter the devil. Blessed salt is a powerful sacramental.
 
Why on earth would a devil lurk in a hotel room simply because it has been the venue of sin in the past? I think they’re a little more intelligent than that.

For one thing, I doubt there are many corners of the Earth’s surface that haven’t at some time been a venue for some such sin or other. I believe that sin and its consequences attach mainly if not entirely to the person who committs them, not to the place.

A hotel room is just that - a random collection of inanimate objects. My own home, and my own television and computer, are equally if not more likely to be the venue and occasion of such sin for me, than any hotel that I may randomly occupy for a day or a few out of my life.

Nothing wrong with prayer or the use of sacramentals at all seasons and all occasions - but I use them for my own sake. Wherever I may be I am the same equally frail and susceptible person.
 
Why do you think we had our rented house blessed less than a week after we moved in?

Catholics have always done that. We have shifted 13 times in the last 34 years. We have lived in houses where the ‘atmosphere’ has ranged from spooky to plain nasty to nothing bad. The worst place was early in our marriage, where my husband was having dreams I was being unfaithful to him and I was dreaming he was beating me up.

This had a strained affect on our relationship until one day I happened to mention the weird recurring dreams I had been having and he told me about his. When I told this to a friend - the one who had found us the place to live - she told me that the previous tenants (who she knew) were doing both those things.

We made sure to have the next place blessed straight away.

Holy water, blessed salt and St Benedict medals now have a permanent place in my home, wherever that may be.

PS I am probably one of the most sceptical, least superstitious people I know. But I do believe in the supernatural as taught by the Church.
 
Just pray three Hail Marys, one Our Father and one Glory Be, and go to sleep.

Good post, Eileen. It is very important to get your house blessed. I hope people read the Father Amorth books I linked. They will certainly have a better understanding of the powers of the devil if they read them.

One of the problems in the Church today is that the devil is being underplayed. When is the last time you heard your priest mention the devil in a homily at a NO Mass? Yes, at the Latin Mass the priest will still talk bout the devil, but the devil is underplayed and ignored in the vast majority of today’'s Catholic churches.

I think because Priests that belong to FSSP for instance have one year spiritual training, where the other seminaries don’t offer it anymore. Pope John Paul said, those that don’t believe in the devil, don’t believe in scipture. I use Holy Water, medals etc…have many miracles associated with using medals or rosaries for protection. I also think that we live in dangerous times from all the freak accidents you read about and evil out there in society, people need to have some kind of protection on them, especially children. These medals, salt and holy water are God’s gifts of protection and a reminder of our faith in Him.

Of course I believe in the supernatural - I myself have holy water, St Benedict medals and blessed candles from Candlemass. But as I said, they’re for ME and I would have them the same anywhere I lived (and take the medals and my blessed Rosaries with me wherever I travel too).

I just am a little sceptical that evil attaches to particular places to quite that extent.

There’s a perfectly natural explanation for the dreams, for example - it was early in your marriage and you’d moved into a new home. You were both probably quite stressed and this manifested itself in your dreams. No supernatural element required.
 
Actually it’s well attested that demons will attract themselves to certain areas.

If you wont take it from your fellow Catholics. Take it from the Catechumen (now Elect) boy that use to be involved with the occult.

Demons and the like will attach themselves to certain areas in fast as you can sin…
 
I’ve had my house blessed, too. But there’s a fine line between letting the devil know that your house is dedicated to God and warding off superstitious spirits.

Show me someplace you can guarantee me sin hasn’t happened. There have been sins happening in my house after we blessed it, but that doesn’t mean we have to bless it all over again every single time somebody sins there.

I’ve been to lots and lots of hotel rooms across America during my life and I have watched TV’s in nearly all of them. Never have I been suddenly tempted to order or watch a porno movie, and it didn’t take a towel over the TV to achieve that. As a matter of fact, if the first thing I thought of when I went to a hotel room was trying to ward off the evil lurking in the room so I wouldn’t watch porno, I’d spend most of the time in the hotel room thinking about porno and looking at the towel-covered TV rather than not thinking about porno at all.

Towels are for showers, prayers are for souls! 😉
