DeVos booed speaking at historically black university

I heard earlier that the university’s administration threatened to mail diplomas as a response to students’ behavior. I got a good chuckle out of the ill-conceived notion that this would be viewed as a threat by students.

I’ll give points to the school for that.

But no one is really safe anymore. Lots of places won’t even let Ayaan Hirsi Ali speak. Julie Bindel gets trigger warnings on her publications. Even Dave Rubin had a speech cancelled. Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock won’t even perform on college campuses anymore.

Problem is once you start censoring speakers, it never ends. That’s the fundamental crux of this victimhood line of thinking.

I thought what she said was well-intentioned. The left is just using that a roundabout attack on school choice, which they hate because it will wake up minorities to their real agenda and mean less cash flow from corrupt unions.

Another snide unfounded comment from the white racists right. Spining the narrative of fake news for school choice by using the blacks as pawns, DeVos knew full well of racists segregation which required black universities. As well as racist comments from Trump signaling Friday that he may not implement a 25-year-old federal program that helps historically black colleges finance construction projects on their campuses, suggesting that it may run afoul of the Constitution. Congressional supporters of historically black colleges called the signing statement “stunningly careless and divisive.” Also desire defund programs of after-school initiatives and programs that support Native Hawaiian and Alaska Native education. So if you are white anglo saxon, you got it made.

By the standards of the American left and according to Joy Behar’s college professor, it is impossible for me to be a racist.

Also, the historical party of racism are the Democrats. Slavery. Trail of Tears. Jim Crow. Segregation. They even tried to stop women from voting.

The GOP is BY FAR the BEST party for minorities. I’m so happy to vote for them and for the minority communities.

Her heart was in the right place, and I knew what she meant.

Trump is not a racist. Joe Biden has said FAR more racist things than Trump. Mr. Trump is a true man of the people who cares about all races and puts his money where his mouth is.

So I cut out the parts I want to address, and added numbers to show what I’m referring to.

1 - Sort of, but not really. Those arguments depend on how one defines ‘racism’. They define racism as institutionalized and systemic bigotry, not just being hateful because of race. It’s talking past one another because the terms are defined differently.

2- Sure, but that’s when the Democrat party was the conservative party, and the GOP was the liberal party. That’s now flip-flopped.

3- I don’t know why you think he’s a ‘man of the people’. He lived in a literal gilded tower. But that’s neither here nor there. Because I agree that I don’t think Trump is racist. I don’t think he’s racist at all. If he had a business manager that was black, Chinese, Muslim, whatever, if they were good at their job I think Trump would have no problem being friendly. But I think that Trump treats -all- human beings regardless of race as tools to be used. And if it’s expedient or useful for him to be horrible, he will be to anyone regardless of their race. So… I guess that’s better than being racist.

4- Local and state politics impact a person far, far more than federal politics do. If Republican policy is so great, it -should- be able to dig the poorer states out, right? Taxes are lower, there’s less regulation, etc. I don’t know, I’m not a political scientist or a policy wonk. But still… Local and state politics have a much bigger impact in our daily lives.

That is fair. But you are also well aware that they championed the transformations of the civil rights era, and in so doing lost support among many who disagreed and defected to the republican party where they have been welcomed to this day. Leaving out the broader truth is unfair.

The inmates have definitely taken over the asylum that is academia.

This whole statement is racist!
 
I’m not really sure what she said that was so offensive. From the article, it seems reference to “school choice” was deemed offensive because earlier in history there was no school choice and this very school was a result of that lack of choice.

But since “school choice” now is basically a term for “vouchers with which to go to a better school”, it is actually a weapon against the de facto segregation that guarantees so many elementary and secondary students an inferior education.

I have never heard of this school. The administrators were probably pretty proud of themselves to get a cabinet official for a speaker, and particularly one whose responsibility is education. And they might have thought it a way to perhaps get more funds for historically black colleges like their own. Too bad at least some of the students did their best to thwart both ambitions.
