I heard some years ago about the devotion to the holy souls in purgatory and their powerful intercession? Would have any thoughts on this matter? And do you have a devotion to them? Please enlighten me. Thanks.
But maybe being one step closer to God gives them the ability to pray for us in a different way than they prayed on Earth. If God hears our prayers, then he must hear theirs as well. (This is of course assuming souls in Purgatory can pray; they can, right?)Virtueworks,
Please clarify for me what you mean by devotion to souls in pergatory.
The way I read your post I thought you were saying that souls in pergatory can interceed for us hear on earth. It seems that all of the posters to this thread think you are talking about us praying FOR the souls in pergatory.
I have never heard of souls in pergatory being able to interceed for us. It doesn’t seem possible as I am under the impression that they are not fully joined with God.
Well, the reason that we pray to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, is that they are guaranteed a spot in heave, they just need to finish purifying their souls the get there… so, they are closer to God already… this is why we can ask their intercession… we know somebody is a saint because they have intereceeded to God for us… hope that helpsBut maybe being one step closer to God gives them the ability to pray for us in a different way than they prayed on Earth. It is my understanding that when you help a soul make it to heaven you have someone in heaven who will then pray for your soul and in turn help you go to heaven. I just read the Amazing secret of the souls in purgatory an interview with Maria Simma by Sr Emmanuel of Medjugorje, it is a great for this topic.Virtueworks,

I have been thinking about reading that book fo some time too. Amazon always recommends it to me. But I was wondering is the Sr. Emmanuel of Medjugorje related to the “visionaries” currently there?I just read the Amazing secret of the souls in purgatory an interview with Maria Simma by Sr Emmanuel of Medjugorje, it is a great for this topic.
Jesus also once told St Gertrude to unite everything she did to His Sacred Heart...this would in turn Divinize the merits of her prayers and give them infinite worth. (See Love, Peace & Joy by Father Andre Prevot from [www.TanBooks.com](www.TanBooks.com) )
The prayer itself is wonderful. . . I am, however, somewhat skeptical about the promised release of 1000 souls from purgatory every time it is said.In a little book that came my way I discovered the Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great which I now recite daily. Apparently Our Lord told St. Gertrude that this prayer would release 1000 souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was extended to include living sinners as well.
For those who may not know it, it reads: “Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family - Amen.”
I’m not sure whether this qualifies as a ‘Devotion’ and have trouble with the notion that God is an accountant, but I like saying it.
