I heard some years ago about the devotion to the holy souls in purgatory and their powerful intercession? Would have any thoughts on this matter? And do you have a devotion to them? Please enlighten me. Thanks.

Macabes says, the bible, for us to pray for the holy souls in Purgatory. I see them in my dreams and they can not talk because they are receiving punishment. THerefore it is my belife because the bible says it, and I have seen it, and Padre Pio says it. We should pray for them.

Sometimes they are at the cemetary, it is good to visit the Souls in Purgatory and where there body is resting at the cemetary and to pray for them. Padre Pio has said it and I belive I have seen it. There are priests sometimes in Purgatory. They should be prayed for as often times they had given up their lives for us and perhaps in one way or another misled.

Somewhere in the books of Macabees, there is a statement saying that a “collection” was taken up for souls in Purgatory (that’s not the exact wording, but close to it).

In a little book that came my way I discovered the Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great which I now recite daily. Apparently Our Lord told St. Gertrude that this prayer would release 1000 souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was extended to include living sinners as well.

For those who may not know it, it reads: “Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family - Amen.”

I’m not sure whether this qualifies as a ‘Devotion’ and have trouble with the notion that God is an accountant, but I like saying it.

Virtueworks,
Please clarify for me what you mean by devotion to souls in pergatory.
The way I read your post I thought you were saying that souls in pergatory can interceed for us hear on earth. It seems that all of the posters to this thread think you are talking about us praying FOR the souls in pergatory.
I have never heard of souls in pergatory being able to interceed for us. It doesn’t seem possible as I am under the impression that they are not fully joined with God.

But maybe being one step closer to God gives them the ability to pray for us in a different way than they prayed on Earth. If God hears our prayers, then he must hear theirs as well. (This is of course assuming souls in Purgatory can pray; they can, right?)

Well, the reason that we pray to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, is that they are guaranteed a spot in heave, they just need to finish purifying their souls the get there… so, they are closer to God already… this is why we can ask their intercession… we know somebody is a saint because they have intereceeded to God for us… hope that helps

It is my understanding that when you help a soul make it to heaven you have someone in heaven who will then pray for your soul and in turn help you go to heaven. I just read the Amazing secret of the souls in purgatory an interview with Maria Simma by Sr Emmanuel of Medjugorje, it is a great for this topic.

Ah,
This makes sense.
I really have a hard time with the idea of intercesion BY someone IN purgatory. The only way I can imagine this happening is to consider our lack of understanding of “time” in purgatory. I can imagine a person being both in heaven and in purgatory at the same time (from our reference point of time). And of course, as you say, by someone who has left purgatory.

There is a highschool and college classmate of mine who commited suicide some years back. We were close for a time. Years after her death I began having urges to pray for her and have done so. It is because of these urges that I am quite certain that this person was/is in purgatory. It is kind of comforting for me to beleive that she was saved even after a suicide and now that I might have someone else interceeding for me.

Thanks Monica

I do have a devotion to the holy souls in purgatory. They may be “helpless” where they are right now, but praying for the “Church suffering” disposes them to help us much more when they reach heaven.

I don’t know if they can intercede for us while in Pugatory, but hopefully upon their release they will be willing to do so, just as we pray for their release. Faustina often had visions of souls in Purgatory, as did other mystics. I try to dedicate all my prayers for the “forgotten souls in Purgatory,” as well as for conversions for those still alive.

I tr to say the prayer from St. Gertrude daily too. Have you read if from the Pieta prayer book too? The way it is worded makes me wonder if it is said more than once, then 1,000 souls will be released each time it is said. But then I wonder too, is it possible to make the same offering more than once a day?

The prayer motivated me to read more about Gertrude of Helfa, but I was disappointed that the book ddin’t have more about Purgatory. The book I read had some prayers form her, but not that one, whcih also disappointed me.

I have been thinking about reading that book fo some time too. Amazon always recommends it to me. But I was wondering is the Sr. Emmanuel of Medjugorje related to the “visionaries” currently there?

There are five decades in the Rosary (well, actually there are now 20 decades but when “saying a rosary” most people pray the five decades present on the rosary beads) … one decade is offered up for our Holy Father, another decade is offered up for my family (both living & dead), another decade is offered up for my own soul, another decade is offered up for all those that I promised to pray for and another decade is offered up for the poor forgetten souls in Purgatory.

I pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary daily for the Holy Souls in Purgatory…

I am not sure what you mean by devotion TO the souls in purgatory. I pray for them, request Masses for them, but I do not honor them the way I do the saints for instance.

**I perform the daily Stations of the Cross, the Rosary and several other smaller devotions and offer everything to Mary(ala Montfort Consecration). She in turn gives them most prudently for those causes she feels most urgent…i.e. Souls in Purgatory…
Code:
Jesus also once told St Gertrude to unite everything she did to His Sacred Heart...this would in turn Divinize the merits of her prayers and give them infinite worth. (See Love, Peace & Joy by Father Andre Prevot from [www.TanBooks.com](www.TanBooks.com) )
Jesus also said to St Margaret Mary: “I am Eternal Truth, incapable of any lie. I am faithful to My promises” (See Prayers and Heavenly Promises by Joan Carroll Cruz www.TanBooks.com )**

Hope this helps.

Please! We don’t do devotions to the souls in Purgatory but rather for the souls in Purgatory. Just wanted to clarify that in case some one is thinking, “Oh those Catholics and their polyteism!” LOL!

We are called to pray for the souls in Purgatory. It is an act of mercy as they suffer greatly in the purification process by being separated from God. It is our duty as members of the Church Militant to pray for the Church Suffering so that they may join sooner the Church Triumphant.

The prayer itself is wonderful. . . I am, however, somewhat skeptical about the promised release of 1000 souls from purgatory every time it is said.
