He’s taken his story to the news. I’m not sure how to interpret that. I don’t think I would have done the same in his place.
Right, but it could have been a strategy. He and his wife were/are probably being hounded by reporters 24/7. If he could get in front of the story a little, preemptively answer some questions, he might have been able to blast the fire out before it got too bad.

No education is worth selling your body to pay for it.
Like I mentioned before, when you’re that young you have no clue how something like this is going to impact the rest of your life. I have a friend who was one of the feature/main strippers at one of the biggest strip clubs in town back in college. She spent years denying it after she quit, but not too many people bought her story. They still use footage of her in their commercials and apparently use pictures of her in other promotional materials. She also did a lot of private work on the side. She and her husband moved to Arizona right before their oldest daughter entered school, not just because of the commercials and billboards, but because of how often she’d be propositioned when they’d go out, and the almost inevitable fights her husband would end up in as a result. They’ve only been back to town once or twice in the last 10-12 years and almost never see their families all because of her “harmless” decision to sell her body back then.

Agree … I often get mad because education has almost become a false god in our culture.

I too had a friends who went into stripping/porno. I thank god I never jumped off that cliff with them. I have always observed that men like these women because they believe they can “save” them. When the men realize they can’t save them they become more controlling to get the mans desire (submission) and this causes more rebellion from the women.

Back to the original story, we have worship of self (vanity/narcessism) and worship of education. When we put these ideals above God, and family we get burnt.

From news.com.au:THE dad of Duke University’s famous porn-star co-ed is an Army doctor, who learned of his little girl’s racy off-campus work after returning from duty in Afghanistan.

Dr. Kevin Weeks had just come home from one of the world’s most dangerous corners, only to be hit with the stunning news on the home front, according to The Daily Mail.

Weeks was shocked that daughter Miriam Weeks — known as sex kitten Belle Knox in her porn moonlighting — was doing the deed on film so she could help out with Duke’s massive tuition.

(read the rest there)
Also see related pieces in the NY Daily News, NY Post, and the Mail.

The NY Daily News article quotes the daughter Mirian as saying:
“My parents aren’t upset,” Weeks told the Daily News Monday in between filming scenes for an upcoming adult film.
As a parent of a daughter around the same age as Miriam Weeks, I can’t imagine not being upset over such a situation. (No, if it was my daughter, I highly doubt that I would cut her off from the family, but not being upset???)

My personal reaction would likely be of grave concern for the state of her soul. Likewise, I would be gravely concerned for her health and how she has likely ruined her future.

Not upset? I can’t even visualize the possibility. The possibility of me saying, “gee, honey, that’s neat. Maybe you could take me to work and introduce me to some of your friends” doesn’t even enter into the equation.

So if you were a devout Catholic parent of a child who took up this for a living, how would you react? Do you react with shock and tell her to get out? Do you embrace her new career choice and express hope that she work to rise to the top of her chosen profession?

(Note: I can imagine that such a thread would be immediately deleted if it was a hypothetical…but apparently it’s real, and, frankly, it may happen more often than any of us like to think)

BTW, the back story on this, apparently, is that her parents weren’t financially capable of coughing up the full amount of tuition for Duke…and she decided to do this to make up the difference.
Unless anyone here can be of real help in this situation, there is no need to start a thread on this and post all this on a public forum.

If I’m honest with myself, I would probably react rather poorly. I would certainly be angry, and hurt, and confused, and shocked. In the end, though, I would probably be ashamed of myself for being insufficient to the task of properly forming her conscience, whether that be due to the education I provided for her, the example I set for her, or the relationship I had with her, or some combination of these things.

I suppose then I would have to assess my life as a father, trying to understand where I had failed, and then set to the task of correcting my failure. I would have failed her, and it would therefore be my duty to make up to her for that failure.

Her choices will always be her choices, and all I can do is the best that I can. But when there is a disconnect of such massive scale, then there must have been some great failing on my part. If she doesn’t understand what a true, meaningful relationship with a man looks like, why is that? I was the male figure in her life, therefore if she doesn’t understand this, then the blame falls to me.
