Update:

We did have a good night. He is now off all blood pressure meds but one. His use of oxygen is down, and his “saturdation level” (how much oxygen he keeps and carries into the body) is at 94%. He is not out of the woods yet. He is still on dialysis, and they are going to have to add insulin to the mix. Oh- and it seems in the hospital world, bowel movements are a trophy, and my husband has had 2!! He is still in a drug-induced coma.

I have told the nurses that I want the pressuring doctor off his case, and am calling in a friend who is a doctor, who I didn’t realize had privileges there.

Thank God for good news. God speed his healing. God grant you strength Burbs.

Some good news! Praise the Lord and thank you, Mother Mary. I will remember him in prayer tonight before the Blessed Sacrament. Hang in there.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Keeping him in prayer along with his new doctor and medical team. Thank you for the update…

Gracious and loving Lord, You breathed Your Holy Spirit upon Adam, giving him the breath of life. As he struggles for that blessed breath, look with Divine Mercy upon OutinChgoburbs husband. Graciously breathe your Healing Spirit upon him and grant that he not harden his heart, but repent and accept Your love, which has existed for him from all ages. For, You have made them not two, but one flesh, Lord, and both suffer. Shower them with mercy, and may Heavenly healing be his at Your command. May Your blessing be upon the doctors, nurses and technicians who treat him and watchfully guard his precious life. You have made him in Your own image and likeness. Watch over that image and restore it to health, that his breath may praise Your Holy Name to the ends of the earth. I ask this through Christ, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God for ever and ever. Amen, Alleluia!

As an ICU nurse, I can tell you that the nurses and doctors will tell you the truth. Please believe them! They would rather you know the truth than give you false hope! Your husband is in bad shape if his kidneys are failing. Antibiotics only make the kidneys worse, but they must be given for the pneumonia. Please know that God has a plan for your husband and no matter how much knowledge we have medically, God’s will prevails. Please accept that the good Lord may be ready to take your husband. He is suffering . Pray that God’s will not yours be done. Prayers for your husband! You are in for a long hard road. But please believe the nurses and doctors! They would rather you knew the truth than give you false hope!
They would only tell you to make him a do not recussitate if they truely believed that he would not get better! Dialysis is very serious! Pray for God to take this decision out of what you want and into what He wants.
The biggest thing that I can tell you is to prepare yourself for what the Lord wants and don’t be selfish. You may not be ready for your husband to leave you, but the good Lord may believe this is his time to go to heaven. Pray for the wisdom to know the difference between your will and God’s will.
Prayers for you and your family. But my biggest advice is to believe what the doctors and nurses tell you. They would rather that you be prepared than give you false hope. Dialysis this early IS NOT A GOOD SIGN!!!

Poor OutinChicagoburbs :console:

Prayers for your husband and your whole family :crossrc:

I will keep you and your husband in my prayers. May God bless.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death.
Amen

I know you think you are doing me a favor, dale(name removed by moderator). I am not angry at your opinion.

However- His kidneys are not failing. The nephro team and I voted on slo-mo dialysis as a way to prevent failure. The molecular structure of the drugs he’s receiving are larger, giving the kidneys a run for their money. Better to save them than to totally misuse them in allowing them to sift through some of the leftovers of these drugs.

Only one doctor wanted a DNR. He was also arrogant, spoke very poor English, and would not explain anything, and placed there by “hospital medicine”. He was more interested in putting me in my place for no good reason, and he is off the team. The day nurse was appalled at his actions, as he was at her station when he called me, and made a report of it. In his place is an attending whose family I know, a man of talent who is also Catholic. I know him to be an honest and caring man.

The rest of the team is all for fighting this to the end, whatever the outcome. They were thrilled when I chose this doctor to be the attending.

I am quite prepared to do God’s Will. I also know God would want me to do everything possible to keep my husband alive. I also know my husband, and that if there was such a thing as a Heroic Measures Order, he would want me to sign that. And I am hardly a selfish person for wanting to do everything possible. It is not time.

It may interest you to know that I have told the night nurse that should he die in the night, NOT to call me, use his or her best judgment, but let me have one night’s good rest so that I can deal with it in the morning. How’s that for reality?

I trust my team. I come three times a day, for about forty-five minutes to an hour, spend 30-45 mintues with my husband, get my information, and stay out of their hair. The girls, ages 7 & 8 and recently adopted (Jan. 2nd) are allowed to see him for five minutes in the evening. We do not hang out in the waiting rooms as if just being there will do something. We let the team do its job, and don’t micromanage them.

Now then, this morning’s report-

He had a slight fever of 99 from 7 PM to 11PM. He fought it off himself. This was greeted with cheers by the team. Today’s goal is getting that respiration up to 40, and dropping O2 usage to 70%. They lengthened the pause on the exhale so that he can try to “catch” a breath and for a deeper result. We have slight progress in the right lung. His blood pressure is holding its own, so they will start weaning him off the final vasopresser. That will take about two days.

We put his rosary on his IV carousel. I got the CD player working. I have it attached to a pillow speaker, so he can hear his music.

Thank you all for your continued prayers.

If you want to know where I am coming from on this, I descend from a man named Donal who took on all comers. He did not always succeed, but he gave them a good run for their money. I intend to do the same.

My husband’s family came to the US in the late 1800s, to give their children a chance. I can’t dishonor that.

Thank you all for your continued prayers. Please keep praying for his recovery.

We had excellent news this morning: The right lung is now at 65-75% clear; more importantly, the left lung is starting to clear!!! The left lung used to look as if it was in a pea soup fog. It now has patchy fog.

DH is being fed in his stomach, lightly at first, as his organs are all “on board”. This will start the process to wean him from the IV.

He did have a brief bout with acidosis, which was corrected.

I am still praying…God is good…now and forever!

Praying for your husband and for his doctors. I am so glad that you had the strength to hold your own with the arrogant dr. Sometimes you just have to be your own advocate and I bet your DH knows how blessed he is to have you. 🙂
