DH in ICU, need prayers! Thanks!

It sounds as if your husband is on a ventilator, from your description, is that true? It also sounds as if he is in septic shock, since he has been on vasopressors. This is probably one reason why he is in acute renal failure, since in septic shock the capillaries leak fluid into the tissues instead of perfusing the kidneys. Add that on top of the fact that you husband is on nephro toxic antibiotics and you end up with acute renal failure.

The dialysis is not to remove the antibiotic from his blood, but to remove the things that the kidneys normally remove. Acute renal failure is often reversable, when the kidneys are re-perfused. They will be monitoring and adjusting the antibiotic doses based on how well they are clearing from the body, which will mean a lower dose in the case of renal failure, since the nephro-toxic antibiotics are cleared from the body through the kidneys.

Exactly right on the money regarding the things that kidneys normally remove, most notably because the “leftovers” in the process are really very large molecularly, and can cause the kidneys a great deal of harm. And he is in septic shock from pneumonia as a tentative diagnosis of Legionnaires, which is why he is in a drug-induced coma. And yes, it is acute, more preventative treatment actually. It is very reversible. I talked with the nephrologist at length today, and she is optomistic he will be off “soon”.

Update: He’s totally off the vassopressors, and holding his own blood pressure at a respectable 116/70-ish. THANK YOU LORD AND BLESSED MOTHER!!! His heart rate is still a little fast.

He’s been off dialysis for about 15 hours, will go on another course for 8 hours around lunch time or so. It sounds kind of dumb, but we’re praying for a bit of urine through the normal channels.

His paralysis meds have been lowered.

For the first time in a long time, his face did not look so sick. The coloring was right, and his lips looked like his lips.

He has EWTN in his room, so the nursing supervisor has him slated to listen to TV Mass in the morning, along with whatever program is running that morning. I brought in some of the DVDs he likes to watch with the girls, so he can hear those, too. Last night, the girls and I made sound ecordings and burned them onto a CD, so he can hear us.

I am really feeling everybody’s prayers.

Please continue to pray, and know that I am offering a portion of our sufferings for each of those on these fora, along with prayers (I have a lot fo time for that right now).

Update: Last afternoon, they were suctioning him, and his eyebrows were moving in his very displeased look. I thought it was the suction machine, and remarked that it was pretty powerful, to do that from the inside. I was told by the respiaroty therapist that it was because he is OFF THE PARALYSIS MEDS!!!

His blood pressure is holding steady. His electrolytes are not quite what they would like, but slowly going into place. He is now getting this stuff that looks like baby formula, made for renal patients. They are suctioning out disgusting globs of nasitness, which is good.

Now, if we can just get him to urinate…He’s stilldoing dailysis.

Gracious Lord, allow us to be like the widow petitioning the corrupt judge for justice. Mercifully hear our prayers knocking on the bolted doors of healing, that out of our persistence, our answer may come. Grant that so steady be our petitions, we may not rest from prayer until Mario is well. May our unsettled spirits drive us to prayer, so long as the need continues, in order that Your Holy Name be praised to highest Heaven. But, Lord, instill Heavenly patience within us, that we be content to allow Your Blessed time to pass for Your perfect healing to be accomplished. I ask this through Christ, our Lord, Who intercedes at Your right hand. Amen, Alleluia!

Some heartening signs…Deo Gratius…keeping you and DH in daily prayer and thank you for your prayers and offerings…
 
Update: He wasn’t quite so sedated Saturday morning, could answer questions requiring nodding, bed raised into a sitting position. He got to see the girls, opened his eyes a little.

Saturday afternoon, while they were changing him for bodily needs, his blood pressure took a dive. He is on a very low dose of one blood pressure med. He had 8 hours CRRT dialysis. Still no urine.

He passed the night in much better shape.

The girls and I are going to early Mass at our parish, possibly out to breakfast someplace inexpensive. I will go over and see what’s what. A good friend has offered to take the girls for the afternoon, will give me time to do some stuff and go see Mario without also wrangling girls, and she wil make dinner.

Please continue to pray, and know that I will be praying for all of you and offering our up our suffering for the CAF intentions.
