Update- He received the Eucharist for the first time in 25 days!!!

His food is a renal diet, so it everything is mostly white and bland (excepting jelly beans). They add xanthan gum to everything he drinks, so it is an adventure. As he was having his trache replaced this morning (needed a slightly bigger and better one), he couldn’t eat, and I ate his breakfast. I have to tell you it is quite an adventure drinking coffee gravy!😛

He got up early this morning and insited on sitting in a chair for four hours. He worked himself to a frazzle doing his physical therapy. he also had 4 hours of dialysis. They will hold off at least 48 hours and see how much urine capacity he has before doing it again. When we came to see him in the late afternoon, he was zonked. I ordered him a cold dinner so they could stick it the frige until he woke up (deli sandwich on white bread, lorna doones, fruit, and thickened Sprite).

Still praying for the right place for him, as well as all of you and CAF.

I just found this thread (haven’t been on CAF much lately)- I’m praying for the continued recovery of your husband! What an ordeal you have all been through!

I am continuing to hold you in my prayers … :gopray2:

I am so gracious to God for his recovery thus far!

Jesus, please hold them to your heart … :gopray:

Thank you for this update…will continue to be keeping him in daily prayer and you too at this time of stress…Barb

Update- Gastro doctor told him EAT or get the tummy tube back. Mario is picking about the thickened liquids, tried to talk me into slipping him an ice-cold Coke, not thickened (not on his diet by two counts at least). His nurse and I stuffed him with canned fruit, all kinds.

He is depressed, which is common in people who have been seriously ill. I am getting him out of the room today in a wheelchair. I am going to go findhim something to change the decor of the room, as well.

The doctor hopes to get him into a really good rehab (not the one planned by the case manager) by the week after next.

Please continue praying, and I will vice versa.

Continuing prayers for Mario and for his placement in the right facility. Prayers also for you, OutinChgoburbs.

For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

:signofcross:

Update- Mr. “I Am Not Drinking That, Sneak Me A Coke” is having an endoscopy this morning to determine where in his gastro setup he is bleeding. This is a setback that could stop him from eating, and slow down his recovery.

He will also get a picc line in anticipation of moving him to a rehab center.

Everything else is holding steady, but he is currently only getting nutrition through eating, and being a jerk about it. Even the sick have free will, to some extent.

Please continue to pray. I will do the same for all of you.

WOO-HOO AND THANK YOU LORD, THROUGH OUR BLESSED LADY, ST. EDITH STEIN, ST. FRANCIS CABRINI, ST. BERNADETTE!!!

He was moved to a regular hospital unit today. He has a duodenal ulcer, which has been cauterized. He has moved up from honey thick liquids to nectar thick (he’s still complaining). He can now have stuff like orange juice and itallian beef, something called a soft mechanical diet.

So, keep praying, and I will for you, too.

Outgoing, can I ask why he is on the thickened liquids? I might have some suggestions, having worked with several people who have to have diet modifications due to illnesses, etc…

1.) Because he was intubated for so long, his throat is raw.
2.) Because his swallowing mechanism isn’t what it should be. It is also why he can’t have a straw.
3.) Because he had pneumonia to the point where he was intubated, and if the swallowing mechanism doesn’t work, the water could go into his lungs and start the whole thing rolling again. SO, if he drinks nectar thick liquids, his throat can train itself to land the fliud in the right pipe.

I got them to let me melt down really good ice cream and reconstitute it with nectar thick, then chill it. It is almost like a good shake. And his gastro doctor got him off the white diet and onto some modifications with nectar thick instead of honey thick.

OK, fast response!🙂

Do you have a speech therapist working with him? She/he may be able to help with this whole business. Often times, there are excercises that they can do to help strenghten the swallowing muscles. Also, some postural changes (ie. turning to one side or the other, putting his head down when he swallows) may help reduce the risk of aspiration, too. As far as making the thickened liquids more tolerable, maybe try adding a bit of flavoring to the water, such as lemonade, juice, etc? Most of my clients tell me that the thickened juices are not too bad, but we haven’t found a way to make the coffees and milks very great at all. Also, many of my clients drink “naturally” thickened juices, such as apricot juice. I’m glad he was able to downgrade from honey to nectar- that’s going in the right direction!🙂

H****e’s one of those people who needs strong flavor components, so I know what you mean. I had them bring him Crystal Light, etc., anything with flavor in it. Cold seems to be better over warm or hot, too. But this seems to be a texture issue. Having drunk the honey-thick decaf coffee, I understand the why of his hesitation. Now that he’s been switched to nectar-thick, he’s in love with the orange juice, says it tastes like Orange Julius. Most of my clients tell me that the thickened juices are not too bad, but we haven’t found a way to make the coffees and milks very great at all. **I got them to give him creamy yogurt, but he can only have 4 ounces at a time, not a big 8 ounce container. **Also, many of my clients drink “naturally” thickened juices, such as apricot juice. **That’s a great idea, I’ll see if they have some on the menu. **I’m glad he was able to downgrade from honey to nectar- that’s going in the right direction Thank you! !🙂
