Origen was a Catholic who was obedient to the Church. Some of his (many, many) views and speculations were later deemed to be erroneous or even heretical, after his death, but he himself was no heretic. He is regarded as the father of theology. Strictly speaking, though, he is counted as an ecclesiastical writer, not a Church Father.
He taught and converted St. Gregory Thaumaturgus from paganism. We have a copy of St. Greg’s praise speech for his teacher, and it seems that Origen exemplified how to teach Christian higher education.
