Did Adam/Eve Exist?

Hi all, thanks for the replies.

This reply is still side-stepping the issue that Phil and I are concerned with. That no matter how or when we got there; Adam and Eve are not only the first two real people in the image of God, but most important they are the only two people from which every person from that moment onward descended from. The humanoid creatures Adam and Eve came from would have to die out without intermarrying Adam and Eve’s descendents. Every person on earth must descend directly from Adam and Eve according to the teachings of the church.

That is simply not compatible with evolution, but it is an essential part of the doctrine on original sin.

Phil is also interested on the immortality preceding the fall, that is also an issue … but I think that could be overcome fairly easily if it weren’t for the original sin doctrine which is the bigger sticking point, IMO.

I tend to agree with GeorgeAquinas. The Adam and Eve story is, in my opinion deeply imbedded into mysticism, and can indeed be compared with the mystery involved in the Holy Eucharist.
I personally believe that Adam and Eve were not mearly our first parents in the sense that they were the first human beings. I believe that Adam and Eve were the essence from which life on earth as a whole could have generated…life from Life.
I believe their relationship with God (the Word) in the garden had everything to do with their Spiritual nature, that which is lacking in all of us. Therefore, I believe that this worldly life on earth could have naturaly evolved, as a human life evolves from an embryo to a mature human being, in the care of our two Spiritual Parents. I also believe that something could have been lost in Eden, due to the Fall ,approximatly 10 thousand years ago, coinciding with the beginning of the birth of civilization, when religious stories begin to emerge. I do not believe it to be a coincidence that this era begins human civilization with the agricultural revolution, and that stories of our first parents speaks of gardens.

Hey Dude ,
If Adam and Eve did exist and as U say all humans are their decendants. Then incest and mutants must have happened biologically from these two after sexual copulation. And idiots would follow. The world’s greatest comic book must be The Bible followed by The Koran.
