I am meditating on the first stories of Genesis for few weeks and I need to hear some comments about them.
One of the intrigue is when God said for the first time that something was not good. Here sin had not happened yet, well at least not according to the litteral meaning of the narrative. But it would seem that may be sin had just happened?! somehow.
Couldn’t it be possible that the third chapter is a kind of repetion of the second but under a different perspective just us the second chapter is to the first?
It seem that man is mentioned as being alone after being introduced to the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The first ‘not good’ thing is mentioned after the introduction of this mysterious tree. Here is my musing at the moment: man felt alone while he was not supposed to really. He was not alone. He was with God. In fact man must have been with his wife (before separation). But the tree could have caused separation and caused man to feel alone. All this is happening while man is made of ‘dust’. Flesh was not spoken of before Adam’s deep sleep. Plus why would God who is one but not alone create man alone? Or why would God proced to divise man into two parts as male and female while God only unite but does not divide?
So I think man did something to the tree of knowledge of good and evil which provoked the following stories in the rest of Genesis 2. God looks like he was responding to something he did not make himself. God is trying to save man from his loneliness. So he educate man and transforms him. It seems to me that man went from being ‘dust’ to having ‘flesh’. His deep sleep seem to go with the separation between Adam and his wife.
Genesis 3 seem to explain the last part of Genesis 2. The serpent seem to have been the one who divided the unity of man. He caused man to be lonely. Adam and Eve became lonely after sin; they were hiding and pointing accusating fingers at each other. They were in terrible condition. But God came to them. He put skin (flesh?) on them in order to cover their shameful nudity and send them away out of paradize. This could correspond to the deep sleep the lonely man crossed (or is supposed to cross) in order to (re)descover the unity: since man will leave his parent and join his wife to become one flesh. But even here we have division. Here man still have to ‘leave’ his parents…which is not really complete unity but we still have to deal with divisions…and this is incompatible with God who is love and who unites.
Overall, it seem that united man at the very beginning was in a different realm. But after sin which divided him, God incarnated him into flesh as He was closing the garden of Eden. It seem to me that it is this incarnation in flesh which is described as DEEP SLEEP. Because after this, man suddenly have flesh and is saying to his wife that she is flesh of his flesh.
The tree of good and evil must have caused the united man to idolatry of animal/‘flesh’ symbolized as the serpent. So Adam must have desired to be like animals instead of being like God. So while Adam went through all the animal kind trying to identify with it instead of trying to identify with God, he ended up by become LIKE animal kind. So this is why we look like animals and are part of the animal families even though we are different, very different.
This could also explain why Abel sacrificed animals. God himself had sacrificed animals in order to find skin for the fallen man. So what animals did God sacrifice? could it be some chimpanzee?
? Are our bodies some mixture of ‘dust’ and some 'Dawkin’s chimpanzee skins?
Later Jesus sacrificed his own human body. And st. Paul teaches us to be at constant warfare with flesh. I am not saying that the human body is bad. As the Cathechism says, there is something good in it. That thing which God will resurrect on the last day.
I think the real body is different. I mean. May be what God meant by telling the serpent that “upon thy breast shalt thou go, and earth shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.” he was referring to our bodies being bound by gravity and depending on plants to survive.
So this mysterious DEEP SLEEP seem to me that it is cosmic. With it we entered into a cosmos which will be destroyed at the final judgment. Why would the universe be destroyed if it was ‘good’ as God want’s it? But God will destroy it and bring about a new heaven and a new earth. Could the final resurrection be the time when we will really wake up with our father Adam?
Does all this make any sens? Did any one hear more detailed explanation about Genesis. I am trying to read Theology of the Body, I try to consider what I read there in my understanding of Genesis, but I would like to hear more view or more explanation of Genesis.
I think understanding of Genesis is fundamental to understanding the meaning of life and making sens of who we are.
God bless
