Did Fr. James Martin just commit heresy?

Given that he posted on Twitter and said “pray for us” I have my doubts about this very generous interpretation that this is a private prayer.
It is private in the sense that it is not part of Church teaching, like the Glory Be. Many private prayers of inspirational Catholic thinkers have been published in books and are still considered private prayers.
He also asked for forgiveness for what "we " did. …I will say that if he was speaking of what humanity did (I doubt it), I can see his point. “Forgive us our trespasses…”

I read this as asking for forgiveness for what we white folk did.
I think he was speaking of society in general an not just white folks. Anyone who has passively allowed a system to develop that leads to such injustices is partly at fault for standing by and doing nothing. I would compare this to the blame that some place for abortion - blaming not just those that get abortions, but also those that stood by silently, just allowing them to happen.

We actually can ask those in purgatory to intercede got us.

They can’t intercede for themselves .
Not completely true:

(scroll down to the drawing comparing heaven, earth, and purgatory and who can help whom)
How else could the church confirm miracles due to intercessions by the departed. Someone prayed to a non canonized saint and received a grace.
The premise is that they are already in heaven. A miracle is not an “entrance fee” to get someone from purgatory to heaven.

If they aren’t yet declared a Saint, then how does one know if they are in heaven?

Good question. You’re basically “betting” on a person who you believe has saintly virtues, like many people did with Mother Theresa and Pope John Paul II before they were canonized. Or another comparison may be Fr. Vincent Cappodano, who is in the early stages of the “pipeline”.

Im no fan of James Martin but comparing him to Jesus is not calling him Jesus. He is correct that we should feel compassion for everyone. I do not agree that " we " wronged george floyd., James martin should not accuse everyone .

People need to be praying to them to get the miricles required for beatification and canonization.
