Did God create dinosaurs?

So I just asked my wife who believes that dogs and cats will be in heaven whether dinosaurs will be in heaven.

“I guess I have to”.

The lamb will lie down with the dinosaur.😃

I find it interesting that this topic should come up now. My dh and I watched a show on dinosaurs just recently. It was on Discovery. They actually talked about the different theories of extinction. They had several scientist that believed in several different theories and went about proving/disproving them. The different theories were:

The meteor - the one that seems to be the most common but several scientist on there disproved it do to the fact that the Earth has been hit numerous times by meteors of all sizes.

The flood - the creationist scientist was on this one. Again it was disproved.

A raging fire - one of the scientist disproved it

An ice age - disproved again

Large volcanic explosion causing acid rain - again disproven by the animals (frogs)

Drought - don’t remember about this one

“Natural” extinction - seem to be the one that appeared to be the most likely according to the show

I have been to Dr Dino’s site. At first glance it looks good but what I found was that upon further study some things didn’t really add up. It’s been a while since I last went to his site so I don’t remember off hand what those things were.

Thanks for the sites. I will definitely look them over. I was a big dino geek as a kid and in a way I’m still one. 😃

mrS4ntA,

Now take dinosaurs some scientists say that a large meteor hit the earth and destroyed the dinosaurs. Now if that really happened did the meteor just hit the earth by accident or did God send the meteor to destroy the dinosaurs?
I say God sent the meteor, and I can’t say I blame Him.

Are you saying dinosaurs are not cool?

As for what I would tell my child. I would say that God made the earth and everything in it but that doesn’t mean we know exactly how or when this all happened. After all there are lots of things we don’t know, like whether aliens exist for example.

Satan created the dinosaurs, everyone knows that.

God creates good, Satan creates evil. Oops, that won’t work. But are parasites “irreducibly complex” that is the question.

Sorry I’m getting warmed up to do battle at USF end of this month. I’ll record it for you.

A small modification - any careful reader of The Lord of the Rings will be aware that saurian beasties of various species are referred to therein.

The Silmarillion further reveals that they are the misshapen and perverted works of Melkor the fallen Ainu, enemy of Elves & Men (and all other beings).

As Melkor is a form of satan, stan (as he should really be called) is indeed responsible for them.

Stan is responsible for the dinos; this would explain the dragons perfectly too.

All the evidence from both texts regarding their (mis)creation points to the time of it as being exceeedingly remote, and also to their having flourished for a very great space of time. Which is in perfect accord with the evidence from paleontology. Which fully supports the historicity of these two books ##

I have no problem with using Tolkien to illustrate points, he was a brilliant man.

But you must realize that LOTR and the Silmarillion are works of fiction, they illustrate points, but in no way tell history.

I do not think that dinosaurs are any more corrupted than any other creature. Melkor litterally corrupted creation, he did not just make big lizards, he made EVIL creatures.

Which were evil - so they were destroyed by a meteor (or whatever else was responsible for their demise). 🙂 This fits with the account of the destruction of Beleriand at the end of the First Age.

As for the different extinction events:
  • The first is the destruction of Utumno by the Valar, long before the Years of the Sun
  • the second, is the destruction of Beleriand (see above)
  • the third may be the same as the destruction of Numenor in 3319 Second Age
I was just using LOTR & the Sil to illustrate the fallaciousness of some creationist arguments. Both creationists & Tolkiendil fundamentalists (if the latter exist) would be able to argue for the historical reliability of their respective texts, by noting that the texts fit the scientifically established picture. The drawback is, that the plausibility of a picture is not the same thing as for it to be verified as fact; there are such things as narratives which non-historical but full of plausible details, which enjoy a high degree of verisimilitude. The same fallacy vitiates both arguments.

Neither can one argue that because some details are real, all must be.

One cannot construct this kind of argument with the Bible, simply because it has a status that no one (AFAIK) has accorded to the Sil or to TLOTR: the status of recognition as a book which is absolutely true in every respect and inspired and canonical; it is too important to people, for that sort of argument to be constructed easily - such arguments get bogged down very easily. The Sil & TLOTR (& the rest of the Tolkien canon, for that matter) are less controversial - so the argument against that fallacy is easier to construct if one uses them rather than the Bible 🙂 ##

I understand,

Just to give you a hint, I am medieval and ancient historian, and I have had people ask me when frodo lived.

So I tend to jump on things sometimes.

Again, I apologize

Absolutely no need to at all :D. But TY anyway.

How ancient, BTW ? ##

I am trying to get into grad school for medieval history, but I want to study all civilizations pre 1400’s all the way back to biblical times.

I just want to see what we may have lost because of our own arrogance.

This & this & this & this & this may be of interest. There’s a lot of good stuff about ancient history on the Net, if only one can come across it 🙂

I almost forgot this ##

I know this is an old thread, but it’s still open…and I’ve been thinking about this topic, so here goes…

My kids and I have been watching a BBC series on dinosaurs, and it got me thinking----I have no answers, but a few thoughts are rolling around in my head:
  1. Satan is called “the Ancient Serpent” in Revelation, and he has always been associated from the beginning in Genesis with some sort of reptile-form, not a “snake” as his reptile-form had legs at first.
  2. Satan and his minions were cast down from Heaven to Earth at some point before Adam and Eve were created - “cast down to Earth” is significant, not to Hell, but to Earth. This could have been millions and millions of years before Adam and Eve.
  3. Satan hates God and his Creation, and hates the idea of humans being in the image and likeness of God, and especially hates the Incarnation (the vision of which is the reason for his rebellion according the some theologians, including St. Thomas Aquinas?)
Ok, here’s where I inject conjecture:
4) After being cast down to Earth, Satan somehow influences the life already created by God on Earth (*somehow *can include a lot of things, known and unknown). He causes to be made (not by creating, only by bending or corrupting) a race of super giant Reptiles, which take over the entire planet (Age of Dinosaurs) - Why? To make the planet completely inhospitable for humans. Not only for humans, but for mammals in general, since humans are mammals, he extends his hatred for us and Christ even that far.
  1. The story of lowly mammal critters struggling to survive in the footsteps of gargantuan Reptiles stomping and swooping and swimming all over the planet, and then the subsequent (unexplained) decline and extinction (defeat?) of the Reptile race, leaving room for mammals to rise to prominence, and, in time, for humans to be created and flourish, sounds to me like a great story, which mirrors the battle between Satan and God, and God winning by the small and weak (mammals) over the strong and fierce (dinosaurs) - it also incidentally sounds like the way Christianity took over the pagan Roman Empire and spread to the whole world, and in so many other ways - it had God’s fingerprints all over it, as they say.
Thinking about all this, I feel there must be *some *connection between Satan and the dinosaurs, and the battle for this planet which began long before Adam and Eve, and which will never end until the “Ancient Serpent” is overthrown in the Final Battle.

Lots of thoughts, hopefully someone else will find this interesting too : )
