Did God Create Evil

Everything God has created is inherently good. Since evil is not good, it cannot have been “created” by God.

Seems pretty simple to me.
You are correct when you say that everything created by God was/is GOOD. In the beginning God created everything angles , Heaven , Hell … The potential for evil coexists with all that God created. Evil is the deliberate misuse of Gods creation. I know this is hard to get ones head around… I will try and find my proof for this so I can explain it a little better.

I have to disagree with you. Evil ia very tangable. We like to dismiss evil and sin and the Devil and pretend that they don’t exsist. Evil is the misuse of something good that God has created. There is nothing that God did not create…

Please don’t confuse “sin”, “evil” and “satan”. Evil and satan are very different from “sin”. Not all sin is per se evil. Most sins are minor and/or major “bads”, if you will, emanating from our own imperfections and inabilities. Sins are transgressions against, or, affronts to, God. If sin was evil then we would all be evil - even saints.

Evil truly is a vacuum outside of which God is present. When satan arrives in ones life, he tries to push God aside and away. The further he is able to push Him away, the greater the vacuum without God grows.

Either evil “exists” which means that it has being, which ultimately means that God made it, or evil does not “exist” which means that it is the “lack of a something” which means it is fair to say that evil is nothing (or “no thing”).

Tangable means you can touch it. You cannot touch evil. It is not a thing.
An analogy I used to use was: I can swirl my hand in a tub of water. The faster I swirl it, the faster the water turns until a funnel-shaped vortex appears. On all sides of it is the water that I am swirling. In the middle of the whirlpool is nothing. I created the swirling of the water intentionally, but, only tacitly, that is, only permitted, the absence of water in the middle of the vortex.

Thus, I created the spinning water. But, that is all I created and all that I intended to create. That the hole in the center appeared, was not my intention, or desire, but, due to the nature of spinning water. So with “good”. Good is the created spinning water. Evil is the permitted vortex.

It’s not a perfect analogy, but, non-scientifically, it works.

Actually one definition of sin is moral evil, sin or evil being any deviation, small or large, from Gods will. Sin doesn’t make us evil but is evidence of our tendency towards evil and away from the will of- and love for -God. This is why sin is totally excluded from heaven.

I am not confusing them nor am I joining them .My point is we would all like to pretend that they do not exist. My friend sin is an evil. It is an affront to God. Satin was the first to manifest evil into existence. Then he tricked our first parents into sin. Man inherited the concupiscence of his current nature from this first sin.

God could have created our existance to be with out the possiblity of evil but in his infanat wisdom he did not. Evil could not even exist without good.

I am starting a search for more of an authentic presentation of these mysteries so please bare with me. I do not have a lot of time to do a through job. I have found one referance that gives an idea of what I am saying. it is in about the fourth paragraph in this homily by John Chrysostrum. newadvent.org/fathers/210102.htm

absolutely

I think you may have hit it on the head already, but in fact evil is not a thing. It is a misuse of something inherently good. And God did not create evil, it was a byproduct of the fact that he gave free will to men and angels. Lucifer chose himself over God, making himself his own god, thats the nature of the fall, and what some theologians call the primary sin, that of hubris. But ‘evil’ as a notion was not created, and the definition for it is merely the absence of God. It would be like calling dark a thing. We only know that light is a thing with a tangible source. Darkness is merely the absence of light. If we didn’t know light, we would have no concept of darkness. But without darkness we would still have a concept of light because of the tangibility of a light source. The same applies to evil and good. Goodness can be inherent, and good actions can be done simply for the sake of doing good, but evil cannot be done for evils own sake. And all of this falls under the fact that we were created with the free will to choose. If God created us without the free will to choose good over evil, we would all be dragged kicking and screaming into heaven, and that isn’t love at all.

Very good post

Maybe you could walk me through this

Can it be said that evil exist along with its partner sin? And if it exist how did it come into existence.

Did God create everthing out of nothing? And if God did not create everything who else had anything to do with creation…

Did God want evil to be part of Creation? Remember that if you say no you are implying that something exists that God did not intend!

Is it possible that in Gods infinite wisdom he know that evil would exist and he allowed it to happen so that a greater good would come of it?

Is not true that God does not want evil to exist, but that men or angles choose it over the good and order that God intended and since evil must be an accident of mans free will which was given to him by God dose, this not imply that it is in the creation of God for purpose that we can not completely understand.

Please help me understand Gods will

It is my belief that evil exists along with sin, and that sin is a moral evil because sin is devoid of God. That is the very definition of evil. God did create everything from nothing, but I do not believe that he intended evil to exist. Being omniscient, he did know that evil was a logical conclusion that man could make, but that conclusion would be devoid of him. Take for example, a victim of rape. God does not choose to have the girl raped, because the action is evil and God cannot do an evil action. If he did, he would not be God. But, God is omniscient, so he knew that an individual would choose to rape the girl, and he can use that man’s sin to bring about something good in the victim’s life. God cannot transgress himself, but he can make the best of any situation. That is why the idea of hell was conceived. There must be a place where those who chose to be gods to themselves must dwell, the ultimate in evil, eternity devoid of God. And Hell must exist because to turn away from God is the nature of every sin and every evil action. It is still a little confusing because we cannot understand the full nature of God, but It seems to me that God had to allow evil in order that any meaningful love for him or for fellow man could occur. It is the ultimate example of the principle of double effect. God knew that individuals could and would choose evil, that is to turn away from Him and make themselves their own gods, but he had to allow it so that individuals could make a conscious and, sometimes difficult, choice to love and serve God in a meaningful way.

You are correct. But, there is a word that has “moral” as part of it except with an “a” on its front. Acts that are amoral can be sinful acts. A person ignorant of the fact that an act is sinful, commits the act. God knows what’s in his heart. For example, sex outside of marriage is still a sinful act, but, if his partner kills him a minute later will he go to Hell because of it?

“Evil” and “Satan” are absolute privations of God. Without intervention, neither of these will get close to Heaven. Not all sinful acts are “evil” in that same sense. Does that make sense?

What reason do you have to assert that everything god created is inherently good? It’s a fun catholicky thing to say and it’s easy to say; however, if god created everything and every rule and evil exists then it must have been apart of his plan.

Do you read scripture?

Isaiah 45:7
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

Catholicky? Thats scriptural… Genesis 1:31 “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” Evil in its nature is the opposite of good, it is devoid of God. If you want to get technical, then yes God created evil. But only insofar as he created good things that were distorted. As I said previously, this distortion is the root of evil. We refer to this action as the fall of man, and also in Catholic doctrine as the fall of Satan and his angels. It was the combination of free will and human imperfection that led to evil in the world. It is the ultimate case of double effect. Please read my previous two posts and try to re-defend your stance.

These human (name removed by moderator)erfections which you attribute as a primary cause for evil were apart of our design and of course the “fall of man” as described by the bible clearly did not even happen (at least not the adam and eve version of the event). The fact that the bible claims that “it was good” is only proof of the fact that the bible says what the bible says. God could have created a reality in which evil could not exist, but he opted not to. Perhaps he had good reasons not to, but ultimately he could have and didn’t.

Now, if the OT is an accurate description, then clearly god himself was directly involved in some very horribly evil acts for which he should be ashamed.

To ignore or add to the words of scripture is not allowed.

Isaiah 45:7
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

When God creates good, it stays good. God has incorporated evil within his perfect universe for us to learn to deal with it. That is what makes it good.

“he created good things that were distorted” This is quite the remark.

Eve has been maligned then all this time unjustly. God made her with a distorted brain. That would make her innocent of the fall.

I like people who have no logic. Oops does that mean the you too were created distorted. LOL

Consider that if Eve did not eat of the tree of knowledge she would have remained as bright as a cow.

It is the study of good and evil that develops our moral sense.

Who here would be silly enough to stop Eve from, not falling, but taking a glorious leap, and creating the history that we live in.

Without her acceptance to learn we would all be as dumb as cows.

Hurray for Eve. The mother of our moral sense.

I can say this for a fact, if this imaginary tree were ever actually found (wouldn’t be hard it’s the tree guarded by a cheribum and a flaming sword flashing back and forth) I would be first in line for some of that fruit.

Wherever you are, just open your eyes and look almost anywhere, you will see part of the tree.

Come back if you see what I mean.

I invite all others to try the same little experiment. I expect only to hear back from the astute.

If this request is made with the assumption that human evil is proof that our ancestors consumed magical fruit after having been convinced to do so by a talking snake; then I suggest that you are not entitled to an astute response.
