Did Jesus have siblings?

Mental gymnastics. To state that EVERYTIME “brother” is used for Jesus, that it only refers to cousin, appears to me as an act of desperation to defend a non-biblical doctrine made relevent by the “Sacred Tradition”.

Firstborn means exactly that- the first kid. It does not give any foundation for a “perpetual virginity” claim. My brother Bill is the firstborn of my family, and I am “forthborn”.

The attempted distinction between “the” versus “a” son of Mary is feckless. My name is Benjamin, and I am the son of Syndi Leigh, citizen of Maine. I have three other brothers. I am also a son of Syndi Leigh. No difference whatsoever. He is “the” son of Mary, because the Gospels are about Jesus, not his half-brothers.
Matthew 1:24-25 - “And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took as his wife, and kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.”
She was kept a virgin until she gave birth to Jesus- her virginity has only to do with Jesus’ integrity as Messiah. There is no Biblical statement that grants Mary perpetual virginity. That is a Roman innovation.

Among the set of verses below refuting the doctrine of perpetual virginity, I want to highlight this verse: John 2:12 - “After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother, and His brothers, and His disciples; and there they stayed a few days.” Let me ask you this- why are “disciples” and “brothers” separate? I thought they meant the same thing under Roman Catholic interpretation? This verse alone helps refute the claims of no biological brothers. This passage distinguishes between “disciples” and “brothers.”
Matthew 12:46-47 - "While He was still speaking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. And someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.”
Matthew 13:55 - “Is not this the carpenters son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?”
Mark 6:2-3 - "And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?”
John 2:12 - “After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother, and His brothers, and His disciples; and there they stayed a few days.”
Acts 1:14 - “These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.”
1 Cor. 9:4-5 - “Do we not have a right to eat and drink? Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?”
Gal. 1:19 - “But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lords brother.”

Well, first of all, I am protestant and we obviously believe that Jesus had siblings.
“Obviously”?

How is “Obviously” the correct word to use in that sentence?
Again, this is just one of those topics that I think is great for discussion and debate, but I have just never understood why it really mattered, it doesn’t decrease Jesus, Mary or Joseph in my eyes.
You don’t see it’s importance because you won’t allow it to BE of importance.

The nature of protestantism is to narrow the focus onto some “small portion” of the whole of truth, and obsess on that to the exclusion of the the richness of the rest of truth.

It’s known as heresy.

Jesus Christ had biological half-brothers, and Jesus Christ is the Suffering Servant and Messiah who died for our sins and the iniquities of the world. Tell me how this denigrates Jesus.

If that is a “small portion” of the truth to you, then I firmly recommend you re-evaluate your priorities. I believe the RCC needs to do so anyhow.

Mark 6:3
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary (not a son of Mary), the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

Matthew 27:55-56
And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.

by my calculations mary was not afar off she was at the foot of the cross. the actual mother of james and joses is a different mary, could be jesus cousins or other close relations but this passage proves they are certainly not the virgin mary’s children.

Well, I guess when a Church threatens to burn you in the fires of hell if you disagree even with ONE iota of its doctrine, it’s hard to break the hold. (Even when those doctrines are visibly false)

I managed to do so, though.

See my post below (words in red).
Mark 6:3
Is not this the carpenter, **the **son of Mary (not a son of Mary), the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

Lets work with this for a minute please. So in Matthew, where does he say Mary the Mother of Jesus was??

How about this in light of the Gospel verse?

2 Samuel 6:23, which says, “Michal the daughter of Saul had no children till the day of her death.”

Simply put:
  1. The Bible does not state Jesus is Mary’s only son.
  2. The Bible does not state Mary remained a virgin after Jesus’ miraculous birth.

The Bible does not state the negative of those either.

Show where it says that SHE had more children.

None of her “children” were mentioned in the finding in the Temple when he was 12. Are we to assume that they were a lot younger?

2 Samuel 6:23, which says, “Michal the daughter of Saul had no children till the day of her death.”
(2 Sam. 21:8) - “But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite” (KJV).

(Must be a copylist error)

simply put there is plenty of biblical evidence to believe mary did not have any more children, between the vs. below and other evidence showing that the word brothers in hebrew can mean a vast many things not simply biological brothers like we say today:

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary (not a son of Mary), the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

Matthew 27:55-56
And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.

this comparison shows that the mother of jesus “brothers” james and joses is not the virgin mary, couldn’t be since the mary who is james and joses mother is far off with mary amgdalene not mary and john at the foot of the cross, yet they are called his brothers and you in this very topic stated that james and joses are jesus literal brothers, and i showed you it can’t be.

The Roman position is really a poor argument. Hey everyone, brother doesn’t actually mean brother anymore!

Un-biblical. But again, when a Church threatens to confine you to Hades for disagreement, even when a doctrine is absolutely bizarre and unbiblical, many have no choice but to acquiesce.

Please reconcile this
