Did Jesus Marry Women During His Life?

In the catholic church jesus has hundreds probably thousands of wives because their is an order of nuns that have an actual wedding ceremony to jesus so all the nun in that order are married to him. That’s not right dont you think?
They are not literally married to Christ. I love the Church’s theology, but theology is not to be taken literally in the sense you’re speaking. I’ve heard sisters refer to their habits as brides dresses. That doesn’t mean its a brides dress. The truth always remains the truth. But the explanation of that truth can change over time as a better understanding is obtained over time. Too many people misuse the theology in an attempt to prove something when it can’t prove anything but help someone to understand a nuance or something to that effect. It took me a while to understand initially. But now it is beginning to make a whole lot more sense. I still, like the rest of us, have a long way to go.

Hi again Annie do you really believe these…

“Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers,” (Mormon Doctrine, by Bruce McConkie, p. 547).

“The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s…” (D&C 130:22).]

Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in heaven to them both, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163).

May God bless you
Hi Annie I hope you are well and I wondered if you had any thoughts on my post to you yesterday?
You have a good heart Annie and seek the truth…this is good and I have questions regarding the “truth” of mormon beliefs. I reach out to you because it is good to enquire and seek answers.

When God says to do something…it is good to do. When God says stop doing something, we stop doing it.
The federal government would have had no authority to demand a church do anything…so the issue with the priesthood had nothing to do with anything the federal government doing anything. There were inquiries to the Lord about it long before 1978, but the Lord does things in His own time.
Hi flyonthewall thankyou for your comments. It is interesting that you say the federal government would have no authority yet…

Before Congress acted, Mormons were convinced polygamy was not merely permissible, but positively good, for those “of the highest character who had proved themselves capable of maintaining more than one family.” (Section 132 of Doctrine and Covenants is officially subtitled this way: “Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant, as also plurality of wives.”)

Yet this position was dropped when Washington, D.C., threatened to deny statehood to Utah. Similarly, and more recently, a “revelation,” saying blacks would no longer be denied the Mormon priesthood, was given to Mormon leaders when the federal government became involved.

It certainly appears that the mormon church changes doctrine according to the government rather than God’s word. It is alleged the mormon church only changed their position on polygamy becuase it needed Utah to have statehood.
It has been clearly shown that lds beleive Jesus had to have been married or He could not enter celestial heaven so it is believed by mormons that Jesus was married or where do mormons believe Jesus is now?
[To obtain the celestial glory, which means to obtain godhood, a couple must have a temple marriage referred to as the sealing ceremony or endowments. This marriage is referred to as for all time and eternity and means an eternal marriage. Joseph Fielding Smith gave this answer to the question about Mormon couples who are not married in the temple, "Unless young people who marry outside the temple speedily repent, they cut them-selves off from exaltation in the celestial kingdom of God. If they should prove themselves worthy, notwithstanding that great error, to enter into the celestial kingdom, they go in that kingdom as servants. [see Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, 4 vols. (Salt Lake: Deseret Books, 1957-66), p. 196., Gospel Library, [CD-ROM], Infobases, 1998.’]

So if Jesus never married (in your view) He could not obtain celestial glory (which means to obtain godhood). Are you saying Jesus is a servant in your celestial kingdom?

The position on black people was only changed becuase the federal government became involved not becuase God suddenly said “treat black people fairly”.

You yourself must realise God loves ALL His children no matter what colour their skin (and in fact Jesus Himself would have had darker skin from where he was born and raised in the world).God does not discriminate, never has never will.Did you not feel uncomfortable about this doctrine of the lds church for such a long time?

what is your personal view on…
God used to be a man on another planet, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321; Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 613-614; Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p. 345; Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 333). ?

Thankyou so much for taking time to answer this.Peace to you and God bless you

Why yes, blacks are now even allowed into the celestial kingdom. Of course they will go there as SERVANTS.

I have been reading quite a bit about Mormonism these past weeks and the more I read the more . . .

Nope, don’t even want to go there.

It could become an occasion of sin.
Hi Miriam it seems you & I have been doing a lot of research into mormonism recently.I must admit I thought I knew quite a bit about their beliefs and I have been very surprised to learn of some of the things they believe.
These people who follow them have good hearts and are sincere in themselves I pray they will see for themselves and question for themselves some of the stranger beliefs.
God bless you

I spent two years in the LDS church. LDS believe Jesus was married and had at least three wives. I just got done reading a pro LDS board and some LDS woman was saying she can’t believe people think Jesus did not have s*x with his wives on earth.

I went to Mass this evening (I’m in RCIA). I just can’t believe there are people who believe this and teach it.

I’m afraid I don’t know the Bible all that well. Is there solid evidence that he did not marry or is there evidence that he did?
No TikiTokiguy, Jesus did not marry women during His life time.
Please refer to the given link for further explanation.
Merry Christmas!

Hi catholicboy it certainly can be confusing can’t it the terminology used? I thought this might help to explain about nuns a little.God bless

When religious women use the expression, “Brides of Christ” they do not mean it literally, It is a metaphor for a deeper reality. The sisters themselves understand this. They understand that if they were to believe this to be a theological truth that they would be doing a great injustice to religious life, because of the hundreds of thousands of religious men who make the same vows and live the same life. It is important that we what the sisters are saying.
They are describing their life of total consecration to Christ.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that all nuns are mystically betrothed to Jesus Christ. In this actual marriage ceremony a young woman dressed in white, makes a public vow to the Church. After this public profession, the young woman is told that she has become the bride of Christ and must consecrate herself to God “until death”. In this subtle way Catholic Church is offering to the young woman a substitute for marriage to a real man.

In marriage each person is called to make a complete gift of themselves to the other person? For sisters they are called to make a complete gift of themselves to Jesus
Not physically but spiritually, for Nuns dedicate their lives to Jesus as married couples do.
They bind themselves to Him by the vows they take. Usually 3:
Poverty
Chastity and
Obedience
(Sometimes “Enclosure” if they’re contemplatives.)

Nuns and Sisters are women who have chosen to live vowed religious life within the Catholic Church. There are a number of different orders, each with its own charism or special character. For centuries, Nuns, robed in black veils and long sleeved and full length dresses called “habits,” have given their lives to help others in the name of Jesus Christ.

While both Nuns and Sisters are called “Sister,” there is a distinction made in the Catholic Church which is generally not made by the public. Nuns take solemn vows and are cloistered, that is, they reside, pray and work within the confines of a monastery. Sisters take simple vows and live a life governed by the particular mission, vision, and charism of the respective Orders or Congregations of Sisters. Sisters embrace ministries that take them out to serve the people in hospitals, schools, parishes, social services, and the like.

A vow is a sacred promise. As women religious in the Catholic Church, they make public vows of chastity, poverty and obedience to God. They vow to live for God alone and to serve God’s people for the rest of their lives. Their vows free them for this life through which they hope to express God’s love, mercy, compassion and care.

God chooses you and calls you to religious life. But the choice is yours in accepting that call.

As you state, “it is alledged”. Plural marriage was done away with because laws were enacted forbidding it, and one of our core beliefs is to obey, honor and sustain the law. God no longer required it be practiced and put an end to it.
Plural Marriage is not a core belief, but it was practiced for a while. It is not practiced any more.

I do realize that God loves all His children, but God has “discriminated” all throughout the scriptures. Why were only the Levites allowed to hold the priesthood? All others were excluded from it…In today’s world that is discrimination. Why were the House of Israel forbidden to mingle with outsiders? That is racism as described today. Even Jesus told a woman from Canaan that came to him for help that He was not sent to them, and that dogs do not eat from the master’s table. That is down right racist sounding now isn’t it?

Annie thankyou so much for your response it is so interesting to learn of others beliefs and why people whould beleive such things. We can all learn so much from one another.

It is curious to me that you beleive Jesus and satan are brothers
“Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in heaven to them both, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163).”. I guess in the end it all boils down to- do you genuinely beleive Joseph Smith had all these revelations & wrote the book of mormon & doctrine & covenants & so forth.

Would God really have needed to do this when He had already sent Jesus and established His church the- One, True ,Holy and Apostolic Church directly down from Jesus to Peter to our present day Pope Benedict.

Does it sound or ‘feel’ right to you that God would have said these extraordinary things without any biblical evidence? I know you are now a mormon I just wonder if you were catechised sufficiently to know the Catholic Church teachings. Always keep an open mind and like you have said " yes it is good to seek answers! If we ever stop seeking knowledge it will be a sad day…" I totally agree with you.I hope you will always question everything and not accept things at face value.Be discerning for yourself for your soul.As I do God bless

Hi flyonthewall and thankyou for your comments. We do indeed have very different understandings of Jesus. You say “Jesus was God before His mortal birth”, it doesn’t explain why you are taught" to obtain celestial kingdom you have to be married",therefore Jesus could not acheive celestial kingdom unless he was married?Which means you do beleive Jesus was married. It would mean he would have to be a servant?
"So if Jesus never married (in your view) He could not obtain celestial glory (which means to obtain godhood). Are you saying Jesus is a servant in your celestial kingdom? "

As regards polygamy it still comes across that lds church changed its law on this because of federal government and not because God said so. I would be interested in seeing the quote of God stating no more plural marriages.

“the United States government took action against polygamists. They revoked voting rights, seized Church property, and imprisoned polygamist men – about 1,300 total.” ISN’T THIS THE REASON
rather than this …
“In September of 1890, then Mormon prophet Wilford Woodruff received a revelation of the Lord to stop the practice of polygamy.”
The Lord explains His reasoning in Doctrine and Covenants 124:49, ” Verily, verily, I say unto you, that when I give a commandment to any of the sons of men to do a work unto my name, and those sons of men go with all their might and with all they have to perform that work, and cease not their diligence and their enemies come upon them and hinder them from performing that work, behold, it behooveth me to require that work no more at the hands of those sons of men, but to accept of their offerings.”

This does not say anything about plural marriage ceasing or starting in fact nothing about marriage at all.

I sincerely appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut,I think you sincerely beleive what you do and are a good person trying to serve the Lord in the right way.I hope you keep an open mind and question that which sounds unusual. It is interesting that we have these differing views on Jesus and yet we both love Him and wish to serve Him.

May God bless you and I sincerely hope I have not offended you or made you feel cornered.
Have a Happy Christmas

Of course not. I remember those days. I was after all born in 1947. See my name. 😉

This is what the Mormon church taught. It is not now, nor has ever been, what I have believed.
I was just wondering, strange things are said here on the CAF but I really didn’t think you believe it. I meant no disrespect…

Hi TikiTokiguy: I have to say that I didn’t know that LDS believed that. Just curious, do they say where they got that information. I can’t say whether He was married or not, but I don’t think it was mentioned in the Bible. I’m just interested to know what they base that belied on. Also, if you would, do they mention what the names of the wives?

Thanks for your help,

Part One:
Code:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints does not offically approve of the practice of polygamy today, however it was an important part of their past and it has a lot to do with their future.
Mormons claim to be Christians and to believe in the Jesus Christ of the Bible. They are greatly offended when told that they are not Christians. However, when examining their beliefs by comparing them with the Bible you get a real understanding as to why they are wrongly identifying themselves with the Jesus Christ of the Bible

It is not the LDS Church's official doctrine that Jesus Christ was married and practiced polygamy, but it was certainly taught by church officials and believed by the Mormon people. The following quotes by the prophets and authorities of the LDS church clearly show that the Mormon god and Jesus Christ are not the God and Jesus Christ of the Bible. Here is more deniable evidence that Mormons are not Christians because they do not believe in the true God or Jesus Christ as revealed by the Bible.

Note what the LDS prophets preached and believed about Jesus Christ:
Jedediah M. Grant, Second Counselor to Brigham Young the Second Prophet of the LDS Church:
"Celsus was a heathen philosopher; and what does he say upon the subject of Christ and his Apostles, and their belief? He says, the ‘grand reason why the Gentiles and philosophers of his school persecuted Jesus Christ, was because He had so many wives; there were Elizabeth, and Mary, and a host of others that followed Him.’ After Jesus went from the stage of action, the Apostles followed the example of their master. . . The grand reason of the burst of public sentiment in anathemas upon Christ and his disciples, casing his crucifixion, was evidently based on polygamy,. . .a belief in the doctrine of plurality of wives caused the persecution of Jesus, and his followers. We might almost think they were ‘Mormons’ " (Journal of Discourses, Vol 1. ppl 345-346)

Mormon Apostle Orson Hyde made these statements:
“It will be borne in mind that once on a time, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; . . .no less a person than Jesus Christ was married on that occasion. If he was never married, his intimacy with Mary and Martha, and the other Mary also whom Jesus loved, must have been highly unbecoming and improper to say the least of it.”
“I will venture to say that if Jesus Christ were now to pass thought the most pious countries in Christendom with a train of women, such as used to follow him, . . .he would be mobbed, tarred, and feathered, and rode, not on as ***, but on a rail.”

“At this doctrine the long-faced hypocrite and the sanctimonious bigot will probably cry, blasphemy! . . . Object not, therefore, too strongly against the marriage of Christ.” (All the above statements: Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, pages 259-260)

“When Mary of old came to the sepulcher. . .she saw two angels in white. and they said unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She said unto them, Because they have take away my Lord, OR HUSBAND, and I know not where they have laid him.” (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 2, page 210)

In 1853 the following appeared in the Mormon church paper, the Millennial Star:
“. . .we apprehend that even greater troubles than these may arise before mankind learn all the particulars of Christ’s incarnation-how and by whom he was begotten; the character of the relationships formed by the act; the number of wives and children he had. . .” (The Millennial Star, Vol 15, page 825)

Part Two:

Statement by Brigham Young, second prophet of the LDS church:
"The Scripture says that He, the Lord, came walking in the Temple, with “HIS TRAIN; I do not know who they were, unless his wives and children;” (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13. page 309)

The Mormon Apostle Orson Pratt:
“…it will be seen that the GREAT MESSIAH who was the founder of the Christian religion, WAS A POLYGAMIST, . . .the MESSIAH chose. . .by marrying honorable wives himself, show to all future generations that HE approbated the plurality of wives under the Christian dispensation, as well as under the dispensation in which His polygamist ancestors lived. . . .We have now clearly shown that God the Father had a plurality of wives. . .” (The Seer, page 172)
Code:
These are a few of the quotes from the writing of the Mormon elders concerning the fact that they teach and believe the blasphemy that Jesus was married to Mary, Martha and the other Mary and that God was once a man and now lives in heaven practicing polygamy.
To obtain the celestial glory, which means to obtain godhood, a couple must have a temple marriage referred to as the sealing ceremony or endowments. 196., Gospel Library, [CD-ROM], Infobases, 1998.']

This means that unless Jesus Christ was married he would not be allowed to go to the highest heaven which is the Celestial Heaven nor could he become a god. It is an absolute fact that the LDS Church's official teaching is that a man must be married obtain the Celestial Heaven.

The unmistakable conclusion is that the LDS god was a mortal man who was married and his marriage qualified him for being exalted to godhood. The god of the Mormons is a man-god who once was a man like any other man, who by his good works was exalted to godhood. That is what the Mormons are working for....not salvation...but godhood. (See Genesis 3:5, Godhood is what Satan promised Eve if she disobeyed God and ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil) . . .

Probably not…but I think it’s wonderful that you have female friends…and vice versa for them…most women would say they understand men very well…but men will never say that about women…my husband hasn’t a clue but ex does now after a long time…some men are just more receptive…good for you.

no i have not. 😉 but its very strange. every time shes about ready to go thru her " cycle" i get this incredible urge for chocholate. ill call her up, and ive never been wrong. even when im halfway around the world this happens. women are truly mystical creations. it hasnt always been roses though. lot of water under the bridge after 16 years, and there were some times, we were very angry at each other. to the point some would call it hate. but…we could only keep it up for so long. after about a year and a half, we had to reconcile. its kind of like a marriage with none of the physical benefits. theyve never been needed! lol! peace an may you and yours have a Blessed Christmas. 🙂

Want to say that I believe you were taught that. Chances are you are with the Fundalmentalist Mormons.
I recently saw a good video on this very thing." The Fundamentalist Mormons reject the Mainline Mormons and the Mainlie Mormon reject the Fundamentalists. They like to pretend they don’t exist or its teachings by calling them not true Mormons, and the FDM’s reject the Mainline Mormons saying that since they gave up polygamy in this life that they are in a state of apostacy."(Lifting the Veil of Polygamy,2010)

So what your saying is true. I’m sure.
Here is the link to the video Lifting the Veil of Polygamy : sourceflix.com/lifting-the-veil-of-polygamy/
Its excellent and talks about the differences in beliefs within the Mormon church.

As for your answers:

No. Christ nor God ever married.
No. Christ nor God ever had children.
These are all false teachings according to Joesph Smith.

It does not mean Jesus is a servant in the Celestial Kingdom. As I stated previously, He was God before His mortal birth, so does that mean He was married beforehand and had no need to marry here? I don’t know. This is one of those areas that nothing definitive has been revealed.
As regards polygamy it still comes across that lds church changed its law on this because of federal government and not because God said so. I would be interested in seeing the quote of God stating no more plural marriages.
I can understand why you see it that way.
“the United States government took action against polygamists. They revoked voting rights, seized Church property, and imprisoned polygamist men – about 1,300 total.” ISN’T THIS THE REASON
No.
rather than this …
“In September of 1890, then Mormon prophet Wilford Woodruff received a revelation of the Lord to stop the practice of polygamy.”
[The Lord explains His reasoning in Doctrine and Covenants 124:49, ” Verily, verily, I say unto you, that when I give a commandment to any of the sons of men to do a work unto my name, and those sons of men go with all their might and with all they have to perform that work, and cease not their diligence and their enemies come upon them and hinder them from performing that work, behold, it behooveth me to require that work no more at the hands of those sons of men, but to accept of their offerings.”
This is the reason. We were trying to obey the command of the Lord as best we could, but were hindered in our efforts. In this case it behooved the Lord to not require the work any more. We had demonstrated our willingness to obey, in spite of the overwhelming hinderances put in place. So instead of fighting against the law of the land, the Lord had us follow one of our core beliefs of obeying, honoring and sustaining the law of the land.
This does not say anything about plural marriage ceasing or starting in fact nothing about marriage at all.
You may not be able to associate it with plural marriage, but those involved knew it was in direct correlation with it.
I sincerely appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut,I think you sincerely beleive what you do and are a good person trying to serve the Lord in the right way.I hope you keep an open mind and question that which sounds unusual. May God bless you and I sincerely hope I have not offended you or made you feel cornered.
Have a Happy Christmas
I appreciate your candor…I was not offended nor felt cornered.
I do not have everything that every leader ever said readily accessible, so when I am asked about statements, I tend to want to see the exact quote in the context it was made.

In answer to your previous question about my personal view on God being a man on another planet:
I believe that God the Father went through a mortal life Just like Jesus did. Just as Jesus existed as God before His mortal life, so did God the Father.
If one takes all the teachings of past leaders to understand the full picture that they try to paint, then you can understand our position better. Instead, many simply pull one or two statements out ot context to construct something that we don’t really teach.
Just as Gordon B. Hinkley stated, there is not much known about it. Specifics have not been revealed. We don’t stress it. Believe it or not, our critics bring it up more than we do. We stress obedience to the commandments and faithfulness in the teachings of Christ.
We recognize it as a possible reward, as one of our hymns(Have I done any good?) states:
“Then wake up and do something more
Than dream of your mansion above.
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,

Hi TikiTokiguy: I have to say that I didn’t know that LDS believed that. Just curious, do they say where they got that information. I can’t say whether He was married or not, but I don’t think it was mentioned in the Bible. I’m just interested to know what they base that belied on. Also, if you would, do they mention what the names of the wives?

Thanks for your help,
Sufjon
In answer to your question, the church does not teach it, there is no official teaching on it one way or another. Where there is no official teaching on something, individuals are allowed to have their own opinion about it. These opinions can vary widely from one end of the spectrum to the other. One may believe that Jesus was married without being “out of line”. One may also believe Jesus was not married without “being out of line”.
Many of our critics will latch on to the opinions of leaders, and tout them as official teachings, which they are not.
