While all the quotes in this post and thread are very good, they do not explain the relationship between God and Adam.Jesus is God Incarnate. So he is necessarily himself. That is who he revealed himself to be. However, to answer your question about whether it was necessary for God to come and die on the Cross for us is of course no.
As soon as we can understand that God is a transcendent Pure Spirit without restrictions (simplified description) and Adam’s nature was an unique unification of both the material world and the spiritual world, we should be able to grasp the idea that God is the Creator and Adam is His creature. This means that Adam needed to live in free submission to his Creator. Not the reverse.
Simply put. The status of God is different from the status of Adam. Adam shattered humanity’s original relationship with God. To restore this relationship, the Redeemer had to share the same status as the Creator.
