Hi, FightingFat,

The reality of unintended consequences has surprised probably everyone on earth. It is the mangatude of those consequences that always come as a surprise.

God bless
I think he was devastated by what resulted from his actions, as was Erasmus.

I read a quote from Luther expressing his dismay that some of his followers were not following the Gospel as those who remained in the Church.

I looked up a source on the internet…but it alleges to have Luther’s final words…and this passage appeared to look like Luther was traumatized by this pope, my pastor considering him the worst…Luther’s faith shattered to the degree of not believing in any papacy.

Erasmus was like a bridge between the Catholics and Protestants, a Catholic humanist. He declined from Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli as extreme, but did not receive the Last Rites.

Hi, KathleenGee,

The Prince of the Humanists was always one of my favortie characters of that period. I think intellectually, he had no equal - and he seemed well disposed to most people. I was saddened to hear of him not receiving the Last Sacrament. Maybe there were extenuating circumstances…?

God bless
