Did Mother Mary have other children?

Mary the Mother of Our Lord had one Son and His name is Jesus
Cathloic Doctriinal, Brothers of Jesus?
Traditional Christianity held that Jesus is Mary’s only son. The references to Jesus’ brothers refers to other family members, and in some cases to his disciples.

Mary wife of Cleophas and sister of the Virgin Mary (Jn 19:25) is the mother of James and Joseph (Mk 15:47; Mt 27:56) who are called the “brothers of Jesus” (Mk 6:3).
Acts 1:12-15 Apostles, Mary, some women and Jesus’ brothers number about 120. That is a lot of brothers.
Gen 14:14 Lot, Abraham’s nephew (Gen 11:26-28), described as Abraham’s brother (KJV).
Gen 29:15 Laban, Jacob’s uncle, calls Jacob his brother (KJV).
John 19:26-27 Jesus gives care of Mary to John, not one of his brothers.
Zechariah 12:10 Predicts the Messiah will be an only child.
Hi Bill
Mk 15:47 Why is she only referred to as mother of Joses no mention of her other other children that are in Mk 6:3.

Jn 19:25 Where in the bible does it say Mary wife of Cleophas is sister of the Virgin Mary

Acts 1:12-15 is not a complete list there were an undisclosed number of women there and where was Mary Magdeline?.

Gen 14:14 Gen 11:26-28 Gen 29:15 are different because the referrences are to both where in the NT Jesus’ brothers are always referred to as brothers and not relatives.

Zechariah 12:10 They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child
He is as an only son not that he is the only son.

To all, these are same arguments that are made by the JW’s in reference to John 1:1. You invoke man made traditions to back up your claims and still have to do a great amount of twisting to justify your position. Church leadership uses false suppositions and flat out denials of what the text reveals. You have to take a text out of context to support your ideas. The church has made dogmatic statements it can not intellectually defend when scripture has the final authority.

God speaks to us through HIS word. It belongs to ALL believers not a Church. The Church should welcome dialog and exploration of Gods word. When people ask questions in love Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Even Paul was not above scrutiny. We all win.

My “agenda” is to provide a clear explanation of what scripture means and to refute those whose agenda is to oppose Catholicism at every opportunity simply to justify their continued separation from the one true Church.
Such Protestants (Reformed / Fundamentalist) will continue to intentionally reject, oppose, and attempt to refute Catholic teaching, which they consider has no direct bearing on their personal salvation, to “justify their separation from the one true Church.” Thus we hear: Who cares whether Mary was a virgin. It makes no difference to my salvation if I accept this doctrine or not.: the natural attitude of those who believe that we are saved by faith alone (sola fide) , the bare intellectual acknowledgement of our Lord’s divinity ( a dogma of the Catholic Church ) and assent to the eternal spiritual significance of His death in the divine order of redemption in favour of each and every one of those who believe in the Person of Jesus Christ and in what He has gained for those by being “punished” in their stead for their sins. Such Protestants will continue to intentionally reject and oppose Church teachings to distinguish themselves from the real mystical body of Christ - in which He is actually present body and blood, soul and divinity in the Holy Eucharist - provided they believe it is not at the expense of their own souls.

This intention which rises out of a personal self-interest expresses a vile contempt for the truth (that we are not saved by faith alone), and so consequently demonstrates an absence of charity towards our Lord, who claimed to be *the truth * and towards His Mother, whom these Protestants are totally indifferent to, by intentionally dismissing the possibility of whether they are in fact dishonouring and offending her in challenging our notion of her spiritual integrity and dignity through the grace of God, according to our faith, just to distinguish themselves from us Catholics. Charity is the principle of faith and of all the other Christian virtues. It is the principle of Christian perfection (Mt 5:48). Our knowldge of God and his word is meaningless if charity - love of God and neighbour - is absent in our lives by what we do or fail to do. In order to justify themselves as true members of the mystical body of Christ, by adhering to their peculiar concept of a personal salvation by faith alone, these Protestants will persist in challenging the Marian dogmas of the Church with no regard to whether they are in fact offending Mary to justify their existence.

I believe our Lord will mercifully and understandably excuse those Protestants who in the privacy of their thoughts, with no resistance to their conscience (invincible ignorance), reject the dignity and privileges conferred on the Mother of our Lord in and through her Son as revealed through the teachings of His Church. But I am less hopeful for those who presume to publicly degrade her with cold indifference towards her feelings because of their religious pride, which cannot evade conscience until it has corrupted it through its resistance to the informant of truth. It is our conscience that accuses us before ourselves, who do know better (or at least should), in God’s presence on earth, while Satan tries to accuse us before God in his realm.

Now these same Protestants believe that Mary* sleeps in death* and so cannot be affected by any injury to her person. Her soul is either in an unconscious stupor or completely removed from any contact with the physical world. In heaven her soul is untouched by anything which may possibly pierce it on earth. Yet in Scripture we are exhorted not to uncharitably offend the dead by slandering their names after they have departed from this life. It makes no difference whether our Blessed Mother is personally affected by one’s lack of charity towards her because of his self-interest: the assertion of his beliefs at the expense of her maternal dignity. For isn’t it God who knows the secrets of the heart (Ps 44:22)?

Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Even Paul was not above scrutiny. We all win.
Nope. You lose. Here’s why:

Berean Rejection of Sola Scriptura
From Steve Ray’s article: catholic.com/thisrock/1997/9703fea3.asp

If one group could be tagged as believers in sola scriptura, who would it be, the Thessalonians or the Bereans? The Thessalonians, obviously. They, like the Bereans, examined the Scriptures with Paul in the synagogue, yet they rejected his teaching. They rejected the new teaching, deciding after three weeks of deliberation that Paul’s word contradicted the Torah. Their decision was not completely unjustified from their scriptural perspective. How could the Messiah of God be cursed by hanging on a tree like a common criminal, publicly displayed as one who bore the judgment of God? What kind of king and Messiah would that be? This seemed irreconcilable to them (see Simon J. Kistemaker, Acts [Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Books, 1990], 614).

When some of the Greeks and prominent citizens did accept Jesus as Messiah, the Jews became jealous—and rightfully so, from their perspective, since the new believers separated themselves from the synagogue and began meeting elsewhere, at Jason’s house. The Jews naturally considered themselves the authoritative interpreters of the Torah. Who were the Gentiles to interpret Scripture and decide important theological issues or accept additional revelation? They were the “dogs,” not the chosen custodians of the oracles of God (see William Barclay, The Acts of the Apostles [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Westminster Press, 1976], 128).

We can see, then, that if anyone could be classified as adherents to sola scriptura it was the Thessalonian Jews. They reasoned from the Scriptures alone and concluded that Paul’s new teaching was “unbiblical.”

The Bereans, on the other hand, were not adherents of sola scriptura, for they were willing to accept Paul’s new oral teaching as the word of God (as Paul claimed his oral teaching was; see 1 Thess. 2:13). The Bereans, before accepting the oral word of God from Paul, a tradition as even Paul himself refers to it (see 2 Thess. 2:15), examined the Scriptures to see if these things were so. They were noble-minded precisely because they “received the word with all eagerness.” Were the Bereans commended primarily for searching the Scriptures? No. Their open-minded willingness to listen was the primary reason they are referred to as noble-minded—not that they searched the Scriptures. A perusal of grammars and commentaries makes it clear that they were “noble-minded” not for studying Scripture, but for treating Paul more civilly than did the Thessalonians—with an open mind and generous courtesy (see I. Howard Marshall, “The Acts of the Apostles” in the Tyndale New Testament Commentaries [Grand Rapids, Michigan: Eerdmans, 1981], 5:280).

The Bereans searched the Torah no less than the Thessalonians, yet they were eager to accept words of God from the mouth of Paul, in addition to what they already held to be Scripture, that is, the Law and the Prophets. Even if one claims that Paul preached the gospel and not a “tradition,” it is clear that the Bereans were accepting new revelation that was not contained in their Scriptures. These Berean Jews accepted oral teaching, the tradition of the apostles, as equal to Scripture, in addition to, and as an “extension” of, the Torah. This is further illustrated by the Christian community’s reception of Paul’s epistles as divinely inspired Scripture (see 2 Peter 3:16; here Peter seems to acknowledges Paul’s writings as equal to the “other Scriptures,” which can be presumed to refer to the Old Testament).

+++

Those who followed the doctrine of sola scriptura, the Thessalonians, rejected Paul’s oral preaching and the long awaited Messiah. Those who accepted oral teaching AND scripture, the Bereans, accepted the Gospel and the Messiah.

Additionally, although both groups searched the scriptures, they came to contradictory conclusions about the Messiah. Clearly, scripture alone is insufficient to ensure proper interpretation.

The Bereans and the Virgin Mary

When Paul preached the gospel to the Bereans, scripture records that “the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true” (Acts 17:11). It can be argued that the Bereans did not practice sola scriptura as did the Thessalonians who actually rejected the gospel, but for the purposes of this discussion, the point will be conceded.

The Bereans searched the scriptures, but they would have searched forever without finding the name of Jesus of Nazareth connected in any way with the messiah whose advent was foretold in the Old Testament prophecies. In order to help the Bereans understand his gospel message, Paul referenced and interpreted the Old Testament passages which supported his teaching and made the necessary connection between the prophecies and the actual events in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Paul’s authoritative interpretation of the scriptures was required in order for the Bereans to correctly understand that Jesus was the messiah foretold in the Old Testament.

In light of this, is it really so different when the Catholic Church authoritatively teaches that Mary was assumed into heaven or that she is the Queen of Heaven? Like the Bereans, we can search in vain for explicit references to these things, and yet the Church, by virtue of its Apostolic Authority, has infallibly defined the doctrine of the Assumption by interpreting scripture. The verse, of course, is Revelation 12:1 which reads: “A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.” Here, the Church finds a clear reference to Mary, her bodily Assumption and her position as Queen of Heaven.

It is the authoritative Apostolic interpretation of the Catholic Church which helps us to see the truths in scripture that we, like the Bereans, may not find if left to our own devices.

I hate to disagree with you but this iis what my bible said ‘’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’ And I will pour out upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace, and of prayers: and they shall look upon me, whom they have pierced: and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for an only son, and they shall grieve over him, as the manner is to grieve for the death of the firstborn.

Looks like it’s a prophecy about the inhabitants of Jerusalem mourning the crucifixion not that Jesus would be an only chld.

“they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only son, and they shall grieve over him as one grieves over a firstborn”

The grief and lamentation of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will be so great as if they had themselves lost an only beloved son and firstborn as Mary had when she stood at the foot of the cross in sorrow.

Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you.”
Genesis 22, 2

Isaac prefigures Jesus as the free son of promise, who will be offered up as a holocaust for the sins of the world. The Jewish presentation of all firstborn sons and their consecration to God in the temple commemorates Abraham’s ultimate act of faith. Isaac was the only beloved son and firstborn of Sarah, the free woman of promise, who prefigures the matriarch of the New Covenant, Mary the mother of Jesus who wasn’t spared the anguish of losing her only beloved son. Jesus affirmed Mary’s position as the free woman of promise of the New Dispensation when he addressed her as *Woman * before giving her as the spiritual mother of all his disciples. Sarah’s son Issac was born free, unlike Abraham’s son Ishmael, who was begotten with Hagar the slave and maidservant of Sarah. We have the fulfillment of the free woman of promise in Mary, the mother of Jesus the sinless one, so she could not have borne offspring conceived in a state of slavery to sin by having relations with Joseph. Nor could Mary have been subjected to the slavery of sin as a type of Hagar. Her Immaculate Conception and freedom from concupisence is a necessary prerequisite for her divine maternity.

Needless to say, the physical union between a man and woman in the sanctity of holy matrimony is still subject to the stain of original sin and is a result of it. Mary could not have borne any fruit of her womb through a physical union with her husband. Her conception of a child could only be produced supernaturally. Indeed, the fruit of her womb was blessed. Irenaeus (A.D. 180) was the first Church Father to associate Mary’s virginity with her sinlessness. A notion to the contrary would be a terrible abberation of God’s perfect plan of redemption. The Perpetual Virginity of Mary is a doctrine that vitally matters, since it concerns our faith in God’s infinite perfection and wisdom.

Zachariah’s prophecy more or less contains a veiled allusion to Mary as the sorrowful Mother of her only beloved son and firstborn. When Mary presented the infant Jesus in the temple and consecrated him to God, Simeon prophesied: And your own soul a sword shall pierce(Lk 2:35). John the Evangelist, who witnessed the crucifixion of Christ firsthand together with our Blessed Mother, testifies that Zachariah’s prophecy was fulfilled at the moment when the Roman soldier pierced the Sacred Heart of our Lord with his lance. Mary was there atop Golgotha and intimately shared her Son’s suffering on the cross, so we should keep her in mind when reading this prophecy of Zachariah.

Jericho,

You need a bible lesson. The Church (Catholic) is the body of Christ on earth. You are correct that your church is but a church, but the Catholic Church is the working body of Christ as said by Christ and by Paul.

There is only one Chruch that is the body of Christ…the Catholic Church.

You really believe that everyone can read the bible as they see it and the Holy Spirit will give them the truth. Okay then why do so many, so many, so many disagree with the one truth. Why do so many, so many, so many start their own congregations.

You are not willing to follow the one truth because you think you are closer to the Spirit than all believers past and possibly smarter than all those who existed before you. Where’s the humility in that kind of thinking. Remember ‘you must come to the Father through the eyes of a child’. HUMILITY…where is the humility in believing you know more than all those before you. There isn’t.

Read Scriptures to find the truth, not to validate your belief system.

In a previous post you said brothers can be a relative or a sibling I agree. Yet in the context presented it could very well be the later. You keep referring to the Semitic language but the text is in Greek. The five writers had many opportunities to use the word relative as in Lk 1:36 but did not. You would think at least in one instance a more definitive description would be used.

If you were to read these scriptures for the first time not knowing what they were about you would conclude Jesus had siblings. It’s the normal logical conclusion and does not violate the word usage. It seems like you all are doing some pretty serious twisting to deny the obvious. Just as in the six verses about Peter and Andrew. There is a pretense present that is not found in the bible.

I go back to this text Mat 1:25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. because people keep saying it does not mean what is says. If I said “I had no union with my wife until she gave birth” you know that after she gave birth we would have a marital union. You all know what the word until means and are being intellectually dishonest if you think otherwise.

I will believe what the text reveals.

See below but the question I ask of you tell me your interpretation of this verse I,m a dumb Cathloic (nice tactic; I’ve used it before) and I need all the help I can get that’s quite an admission; too bad you don’t really believe it.:D), it is a very simple question of cause if you can not answer I will not be Mad Gee thanks; I was hoping to make you mad, just give me your interpretation word by word, that is all I,m asking for. You say it need no interpretation and I say it does, can you help me or not

BTW, of course no matter what I say or, if possible, how brilliant my logic is, if it reveals you can’t use this verse to say Jesus was an only child of Mary and Joseph, you already have your mind made up.

Doki and the question asked of you that you must have missed. It’s highlighted: “Silly person … no, Jerusalem was not pierced!!! However it was those of Jerusalem that mourned like a person that lost an only child or a first born child. Was Jerusalem the parent of Jesus? I think you’ve not compared ‘apples with apples’.”

Zech12:
9 ¶ "It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
10 "And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.
11 "In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.

It does prophesy that Jesus would be pierced and that He’d be looked upon.

I goes on to compare how the inhabitants of Jerusalem will mourn when they look upon the crucified Jesus: as anyone would mourn the loss of an only son (doesn’t say children so daughters aren’t ruled out:D) and grieve as one loosing a firstborn.

I guess you believe in the monsters in the Apocalypse…It says it in the bible.Who is 666 in your mind, since you believe you know so much? Maybe you need to HUMBLY ask for God’s mercy to help you understand the truth as God sees it not as jericho sees it.

Come to God as a child, not as his peer.
If you are concerned about the word until being miss translated it is not. Its the Greek word eos and means until.

Mat 1:25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus

You can twist and turn all you want but the translation is accurate and means exactly what it infers.
