Two things:
1-anonymous source for something that isn’t even newsworthy.
2-God put a desire in his heart as he probably does to millions of people everyday, hardly a mystical experience. Many things that appear mysterious and mystical are 99.999% of the time easily explained.

Why comment? i hate everyday occurrences that people like to mystify us into believing they’re miracles or powerful manifestations from God. That this non-news is reported by an anonymous source only adds to the ridicule of the situation. But the fact that it comes from an anonymous source also serves to add to the mysteriousness of the “mystical” experience. Sorry for bursting everyone’s mystic bubble.So why comment…

I consider Benedict to be a very thoughtful man who probably had good logical reasons to resign, regardless of whether there were “mystical” experiences or not.

Perhaps there is something to it, in Light of the World he openly admitted he was not a mystic. Its a twist for him if indeed this occurred.

Everyday occurrence? I hate to burst your bubble but popes don’t resign everyday…the last papal resignation was almost 600 years ago.
Something else that strikes me as mystical concerning Benedict is that in his Christmas Eve Mass homily (2012) he said, “How could we now do other than pray to him: Yes,** Lord, proclaim peace today to us** too, whether we are far away or near at hand.”
Later on Christmas day, at an alleged apparition, reportedly the child Jesus stood and said, “I am your peace. Live My commandments.”
Benedict asked Jesus to proclaim peace to us today, and purportedly that very day, He did. Benedict sure does seem very very close to Jesus.

Thanks BeeHumble. I have missed Pope Benedict every single day, I cried when I heard the news, and was shocked. And now hearing this, it makes me feel a bit better… I miss him terribly. God bless him & protect him always.

It is likely that Pope Benedict is very displeased that what he said in a private conversation has come out in the media, because the person he spoke with obviously would not keep his silence. I remember the very unpleasant uproar that occurred when St. Teresa of Avila’s autobiography was made public by the person who required it from her, promising to keep it secret. There old warning about throwing your pearls before swine would seem to apply to such spiritual experiences.
I would accept his claim about having a mystical experience. He himself would be aware of the difference between ordinary spiritual experience and mystical experience. For myself I wonder what happened then, especially since it lasted for months, though I expect that we will not learn more about this until years after his death, and perhaps until after our own death as well.
If this didn’t really happen, I expect that there will be immediate denials about it, since this is being reported in the world press. (But some Vatican officials have already confirmed that Pope Benedict said this.)

Interesting conversation. The Holy Spirit works in many ways; miraculous for sure but more often in simple ways through the heart. It makes sense that the desire of Benedict’s heart would be to draw closer to God would be a miracle…newsworthy or not…we are all miracles and we experience miracles in our daily lives so RobertAnthony is not wrong…but he is not right in minimizing just what happened here first time in 600 years.
When I look at Pope Francis, my faith is renewed, it is energized and he is not saying anything different than the Pope Emeritus, it is only that he says it from an experiential base that is rooted in struggle, poverty, and so forth. RobertAnthony, the proof of a miracle here is indeed the new Pope and his charisms. as the Benedict has commented.

Perhaps you are forgetting something important. The pope is not just anyone, and as the Vicar of Christ, leading the Catholic world, I do not find it at all astonishing that God would place in his heart a desire to act on that which would greatly impact the Church. Let’s see what the future holds for the Catholic Church because Benedict’s resignation is much larger than a mystical experience.
