We’ve all heard that
-Italians are warm and friendly
-French are jerks
-Germans are strict

etc etc etc…

When did these stereotypes come into existence? Did they exist 1,000 years ago? How did they start?

Stereotypes start from what you have heard - you almost answered your own question.

Stereotypes go all the way back to the Ancient Greeks, who thought anyone and everyone who was not Greek, were “barbaros” aka Barbarians. They believed the Persians were barbarians cos they were backward - ring similar to Western thought towards Arab/Muslim culture, right?

Also the idea and stereotyping of the gypsies or I should really say the Roma people…that started way back. The stereotype of them is that they all steal, they rape women…but my Historian lecturer said she asked this in Romania, asked around if there was anyone who was raped by a Roma man, and there was no account - it is a stereotype…

I learnt all this in my History subject in Uni…it was very interesting and enlightening

It happens within countries as well - the natives of a particular area/town/village are considered to be ‘whatever’.

Oh most definitely!

Like here in Australia, some one who doesn’t look “rich” or decently dressed is stereotyped “Bogan”, or “Dole Bludger”, same goes with the poor Indian students who get picked on but idiots here, they are stereotyped to be ''rich". 😦

It also goes with my home city of Adelaide. All the other states believe we are “back-ward” and “boring” cause it is one of the smallest capital cities in Australia.

No we don’t :console: I’m a Sydneysider, have been to Adelaide and enjoyed it a lot.

You want backward and boring try Tasmania (joking, my sister lives there and it’s beautiful).

Nah, that’s not true, Ashurie.

Adelaide is a beautiful city.
The people are wonderful
South Australia’s climate is pretty good.

It’s that beer you drink that gives you a bad name!! 😃

Isn’t it also known that Sydneys drivers are unbelievebly bad?

:rotfl:

Only kidding :extrahappy:
HAHAHAHA! :rotfl: No no, Melbourne drivers are worse! They are scary, they beep at others for no reason and get angry quick! Thats why I don’t drive! LOL I think once I do drive (I am 23 btw) I will limit to Adelaide

Sydney drivers are awesome - it’s just the terrible state of our roads makes them SEEM bad 😛

For the record - live fairly centrally, don’t own a car, don’t need to, won’t ever own one while I’m living in this area.

Surely, the scariest city for driving would be the one that had had the most Italian immigrants? 😉

I am like that too, I have public transport literally on my doorstep…so no need to contribute to the ozone 🙂

Melbourne has it’s fair share of Italian and Greek immigrants (I live in an area which has a large Mediterranean population), but it is the young, ango-australians who are the worst. silly hoon drivers - but that is another stereotype - all young drivers are hoons.🤷

Let’s see what scripture has to say:

Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ (Exodus 5:17)

Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (Nathanael of Cana in John 1:46)

"One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith (Titus 1:12-13)

Yup.

I’m half-Italian and “drive Italian” (Mr Kaninchen says) so I was stereotyping myself. 🙂

These remind of my of the Israelite VS Philistine story, the Samson and Delilah story too 🙂

Philistines = barbarians; and Delilah = women are all corrupt…

we did those in history too 🙂

How will you go dodging all the horse drawn wagons?

My father told me that in norther France & Belgium he was able to get along with his high school French because the natives spoke slowly enough for him to understand while the Parisians talk so fast they left him behind.

Turns out the Parisians mock the Bretons and Normans for being dumb and tell the equivalent of “Polack” jokes about the Belgians I guess not only because they speak slowly but they have different customs even though they’re francophones.

I guess everyone needs somebody to feel superior to. In imperial Rome the blond, blue-eyed Germanic tribes were the wild barbarians while all the civilised peoples were Mediterranean.

My research indicates that stereotyping did not originate in Australia - but it sure seems to have been perfected there… 😉
