Thanks for writing, DaddyGirl.

I would say yes, Catholics should care, but my point was that the writer of this article does not care about the Catholics, they are just running the story to divide evangelicals and Catholics to undermine Trump.

There are essentially 2 separate conversations here.

See, that’s the problem those who think this is just standard reporting have to defend.

The secular left and their Catholic allies tried the same thing with Ted Cruz—don’t vote for the guy he’s the threat to your religous freedom, you know, the guy who’s secretly assembling de facto sharia zones and forcing bakers, innkeepers and florists to service people they don’t want to. 😂

Does Jeffress lead a church or a talk show with an audience? This appears to be blasphemous. Worship is for God not discussing politics.

Not all Southern Baptists are like Jeffress. Russell Moore and Albert Molher are much better and actually ‘lead’ the denomination, though one could consider Al Mohler an anti-Catholic who appreciates Humanae Vitae and signed the Manhattan Declaration with Catholics.

This is more of an outlier. They’re just trying to use him as a vehicle to damage Trump and help the DNC.

These people care zero for the Catholic Church.

I’m more concerned with Jeffress failing to shepherd his flock and inviting a political commentator spewing out lines that are troubling/heretical in place of a proper sermon than the political effects.

She is a Catholic, but I believe she attends an Episcopal church and has enrolled her son in an Episcopal school. Her marriage to Mr. Trump would also not be recognized by the Church as it currently stands.

I def have to disagree with Newman on that. In the first 3-4 centuries of the Christian religion, … So I’d say to be deepest in history is to be Protestant.

This will take 2 posts due to character limits per post.

The 1st 4 centuries (condensed)
The Church has been Catholic from the 1st century. The English word Catholic is a transliteration of the Greek katholikos which is a compound word from kata, which means according to, and holos, which means the whole or taken together, = throughout all, or universal. http://www.catholic.com/tracts/what-catholic-means

One can ask, where does kata holos ekklesia appear in scripture?

From the Greek NT
Acts 9:31
“the church throughout all ἐκκλησία,καθ’,ὅλης ,τῆς ,Judea and Galilee and Sama’ria…" = the Kataholos Church.

Acts 9:31 the church throughout all ἐκκλησία καθ’ ὅλης τῆς
ἐκκλησία = http://bibleapps.com/greek/1577.htm ,
καθ’ = http://bibleapps.com/greek/2596.htm ,
ὅλης = http://bibleapps.com/greek/3650.htm ,
τῆς = http://bibleapps.com/greek/3588.htm , Judea and Galilee and Sama’ria…"
= the Kataholos Church = the Catholic Church.

Catholic Church is used by

Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch from ~69 a.d. to ~107 a.d. ordained by the apostles, a direct disciple of St John. It was in Antioch where the disciples were first called Christian Acts 11:26 Acts 11:26 RSVCE - and when he had found him, he brought - Bible Gateway Ignatius in his writings uses both “Christian” and “Catholic Church”

St Ignatius, uses Christian in (ch 2) and Catholic Church in (ch 8)
Epistle to the Smyrnæans
http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0109.htm of which schismatics won’t be going to heaven _Epistle to the Philadelphians (ch 3)_ . http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0108.htm . Where would Ignatius learn to teach that warning and consequence for one’s soul, for committing and remaining in the sin of schism / division from the Catholic Church?

From St Paul

Romans 16:17-20
# SEARCH rom 16

Galatians 5:19-21 # SEARCH gal 5
both quotes use the same Greek word [διχοστασίαι,] for dissension / division [http://bibleapps.com/greek/1370.htm] And the consequence for that sin if one won’t return to the Catholic Church? Paul says “I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”. IOW they go to hell when they die
The only Church Jesus established on Peter and those in union with him? The Catholic Church
That condemnation for division came from Jesus who does NOT approve of division from His Church John 17:20-23 # SEARCH jn 17 , and since the HS only teaches what comes from Jesus John 16:12-15 Douay-Rheims Bible, John Chapter 16 no one then can say the HS inspired THEM to divide, or inspired all the divisions we see today in Christianity.

to be continued

I def have to disagree with Newman on that. In the first 3-4 centuries of the Christian religion, there were many different kinds of Christian groups with varying beliefs and “doctrines.”
It took a long time for Catholicism as we know it today to take shape and outnumber the other groups.
So I’d say to be deepest in history is to be Protestant.

There is no expiration date to that warning and condemnation against division, and those who do it and keep it going. Once one knows the truth of their condition, their own division from the Catholic Church, and it’s condemnation, (seen in scripture and Tradition) and they don’t end their division, then they can’t be saved. That is from scripture and tradition.
846 Catechism of the Catholic Church - Paragraph # 846 .

Catholic Church is used by

St Polycarp, ~140 a.d. Bp Smyrna, disciple of St John called the Church the “Catholic Church”
The Martyrdom of Polycarp http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0102.htm

Muratorian canon~170 a.d. Muratorian Canon (Roberts-Donaldson Translation) uses authority of “Catholic Church” in determining the canon

Irenaeus ~180 a.d. from Smyrna, became bishop of Lyon, wrote “Against Heresies” he called the Church the “Catholic Church” Adversus haereses [Bk 1 Chapter 10 v 3] http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0103110.htm . Irenaeus was taught by Polycarp, and teaches all must agree with Rome [Bk 3, Chapter 3, v 2-3] http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0103303.htm on account of its preeminent authority

Cyprian~250 a.d. calls the Church the Catholic Church Epistle 54 http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/050654.htm

The Nicene Creed, 325 a.d., teaches it’s an article of faith to believe in the “One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church”

Augustine ~395 Saint and Doctor of the Church. There are many other things that most justly keep me in her [i.e. the Catholic Church’s] bosom. . . . The succession of priests keeps me, beginning from the very seat of the Apostle Peter, to whom the Lord, after His resurrection, gave it in charge to feed His sheep, down to the present episcopate. And so, lastly, does the name itself of Catholic, which, not without reason, amid so many heresies, the Church has thus retained; so that, though all heretics wish to be called Catholics, yet when a stranger asks where the Catholic Church meets, no heretic will venture to point to his own chapel or house.Against the Epistle of Manichaeus Called Fundamental (ch 5 v6) http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/1405.htm

etc

The same Church today, Pope Francis is over, 266th successor to St Peter.

Jesus started one Church. The Catholic Church. He gave all His promises to His Church. No one then can argue the HS inspired them to start their own church, and divide from the Catholic Church because that would contradict Jesus prayer. John 17:20-23 Douay-Rheims Bible, John Chapter 17

Now there were heresies

Protestantism didn’t come along till the 16th century

You can find all kinds of weirdness, especially now that we have the internet. Praying for this misguided soul.

There were 135 different Baptist denominations a few decades ago. All the Bible based religions have a basic core of beliefs. The furthest L is Fundamental Baptists. They are rigid w Bible sentences. 1Adam & Eve. A literal Apple. Etc. There is more than one Adam and Eve. The Bible is an allegory. A story THAT GOD created, not HOW HE created. In Revelation, the woman crushes the snake w her foot. That would be BLESSED MOTHER CRUSHES SATAN. Somewhere, some interpreted the POPE to be the anti-Christ. Vatican is Babylon.
Pastor Jeffries is a God fearing man. It’s a shame he was taught negative things about Catholicism. The Moody Bible school is anti-Catholic.,
POTUS went to the Pastors church who created GUIDE POSTS! NORMAN VINCENT PEELE.,
He isn’t anti-Catholicism., God brought Her church forward for Trump. His policies are good. His behavior was a spoiled rich guy. But, he’s been charitable in many ways. POTUS is not a Saint.
He’s picking good SUPREME COURT JUDGES.
He is coming through w pro-lif promises. He is pro-Israel. POTUS’s character is changing somewhat. He’s doing good under all this hate and lies about him.
In Christ’s love

I dunno, twf. I say those words all the time. He was the best choice out of two bad choices. He screws up constantly but has done some good things, like the Supreme Court justice.

No satan didn’t create the church, but he is definitely having an influence due to Francis.

Trump tweeted it…so some editor said to a reporter, “find out who this pastor guy is and take a look at his book…”…so someone in the newsroom researched it and discovered this tidbit…and wrote about it because it’s an odd belief to have, and also odd for a president to promote it.

End of story.
That’s fine, but there is more going on here than just that.

I always have to laugh when Catholics actually find out what some Protestant denominations think of them. Most Protestant denominations up until 50-60 years ago or so were anti-Catholic to one extent or another, and while a great deal of work has been done via the ecumenical movement, the fact is that I’ve personally known several Baptists, Pentecostals, Seventh Day Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses who are virulently anti-Catholic.

I grew up in the JW religion, and the poster someone posted above was only slightly more over the top than some of the JW literature on the topic of Catholicism. The JW’s adopted that lovely Protestant canard of the Church being the “whore of Babylon”. Attacking Catholics was almost a weekly thing when I was a kid, though I hear through the grapevine they’ve sort of backed off on that (maybe now that the JWs have their own child abuse scandal going on, they’re not feeling quite so arrogant on that topic).
