It may be your intent that Christians (Catholics and non-Catholics alike) should hold ourselves to a high standard than the world around us… but you are ignoring facts and, I would dare say, reason.I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply Catholicism was the only institution suffering from these problems. We simply happen to be on a Catholic sight so I’m addressing my concerns toward the Roman catholic Church. As I’ve said in my post I don’t believe the Catholic Church is any different in these matters from any other institution. You seem to be doing what is troubling to me though. You seem to be trying to deminish the sins of the Church by comparing them to others. I know your not justifying Catholic problems by comparing them to the sins of others? How does this justify the actions of Catholics in Gods eyes?
Besides this, if you believe Roman Catholicism is God’s Church and the only path to salvation then surely you would be more concerned with and hold her to higher standards than those of the rest of the world. Her defense many times seems to be by comparing her to the world on an equal footing. I believe she soils her garments more than cleans them by doing this.
As I’ve said, you can spend your energies defending her by justifying her ungodly behavior or by being concerned with making sure her behaviour is godly.
Why do you ask if it bothers me? The only reason I’m on here and post my opinions is for constructive dialogue…because these things bother me. I wish to please God what else can I do. And no I am not some devious Protestant agent trying to justify their sins by questioning Catholics. I would be considered at this point nondenominational I suppose.
May we finally embrace God’s peace together.
The Catholic Church has never operated in a vacuum and the power and wealth attributed to it is only mythical and divisive–the world has always proceeded on its own accords and the Church, as ill equipped as it may be, has been the one agency that has influenced changes in the world’s structure in order to produce the benefits that we have enjoyed.
Has there been errors? That is a fact. The Church, though Founded by Christ, is made up of human beings that are susceptible to temporal pressures and stimulus.
To demand that the Church be perfect in its temporal existence would be tantamount to claiming her Divine–though only Christ and the Holy Spirit, that sustain and guide her, are Divine.
If you truly feel anguish for the various failures and desire to aide the Mystical Body of Christ into perfection I welcome your feelings and your angst. However, simply pointing out errors and shutting your mind to reality does not make for much inspiration and ecumenism.
Your presentation seems very hostile to me; it belies the holiness you seek to find in the Body of Christ… have you noticed God’s View of things man?:
There will be Judgment, no one will be spared! Yet, God’s intent is not that we fear Judgment but that we abide in Him and maintain that relationship with Him.18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.
19 If you are willing and obedient,
you will eat the good things of the land;
20 but if you resist and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword.”
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. (Isaiah 1:18-20)
You want to share your concerns (spiritual pain and angst), your welcomed. You want to discuss errors and effects, your welcomed. You want to use facts and reason to discuss errors and present solutions, your welcomed. But if you simply want to lump in two thousand years of perceived error with accusations, impregnated with myths and malice, with a selective acceptance of facts… well, don’t expect much more than an energetic rebuttal.
Scriptures are quite clear about the blaming game–God makes no exemptions when error is taught or embraced–He is specially concerned with those in positions of leadership:
47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. (St. Luke 12:47-48)
We are all Call to holiness; each of us will answer to God for our obedience or rejection of His Will.3 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. (St. James 3:3)
