I would say it is accurate to say the early Church believed in the Real Presence.
Transubstantiation was a doctrine developed by theologians to explain the Sacred Mystery centuries later. For example, pre-schism, no such term existed. It still doesn’t exist in the Eastern Orthodox Communion, but they believe in the Real Presence. They just are content with not trying to explain something.
